We are now well into our new units of work and everyone is working extremely hard. Our improvement focus for this year is writing and each students personal improvement is amazing. Our regional work around writing has set a fantastic platform for our school to improve in this area. The students are all actively working hard to be successful in all aspects of writing. The Regional Services Heads of Department have formulated curriculum pyramids that easily explain each Language Strand in the Australian Curriculum. The students are using these in conjunction with me to see where they are working and to set writing goals. Below is an example of Word Level Grammar. Thursday 23 rd 26 th August Gympie Music Muster Friday 24 th August School Opinion Survey closes Thursday 30 th August Book Week dress up parade Friday 7 th September Book Club due Tuesday 11 th September Musical Rehearsal @ Biggenden Friday 14 th September Yrs 3-6 Mixed Netball Tournament @ Maryborough Netball Courts Monday 17 th September Musical Rehearsal @Biggenden Tuesday 18 th September Disney Jungle Book Musical performance Thursday 20 th September Disney Jungle Book Musical performance Preparation for our joint production of The Jungle Book with Biggenden State School is well under way. Please set aside TWO fantastic evenings for the performances at the Biggenden Memorial Hall on Tuesday 18 th and Thursday 20 th September. Doors will open at 6pm for a 6:30pm start and conclude by 7:15pm. Pre-purchased tickets for school families will be $5.00 per person, which will include a voucher for free admission to the second evening performance. Tickets will be available online early in term 3. Students have started learning chorus songs and movement routines. In addition, 37 students from both Biggenden and Dallarnil schools have auditioned for the main parts. We have chosen two main casts, giving many students the opportunity to develop into their role with a rehearsal partner. The two evening performances will therefore be quite dissimilar, with the alternative lead roles starring. The second evening will also be a very different experience for the students as they will be familiar with the stage lights and other equipment, and will therefore be able to enjoy the actual performance much more. If possible please try to ensure that students are able to get the most out of this unique experience by attending both evening performances. It is great to be able to share that the Queensland State Government & the North Burnett Regional Council are actively supporting this project with a large Regional Arts Development Fund grant which will go towards the purchase of digital theatre light equipment for the show and assistance with travel costs to allow our partner schools Brooweena, Coalstoun Lakes and Dallarnil to take an active role in the production. It is unusual for the RADF to fund school events, but they have made an exception in this case due to its potential to involve large numbers of young people in a range of arts activities, which together build to a large-scale community arts celebration. Kind regards, David Horner (Music Teacher Biggenden) 2 Page

There will be NO TUCKSHOP on Friday 24 th August due to our tuckshop volunteers all being at the Muster. The Muster!! So much work is put into ensuring that this runs smoothly every year. The work done prior to the Muster is enormous coordinating volunteers, organising the firewood right down to making sure that the volunteers have toilet and shower amenities. The volunteers that go to the Muster all take time off from their jobs to help our P & C. We cannot express enough how thankful we are to all of these people. This year, the P & C decided to support our Student Council s Drought Relief Fundraiser by donating 50% of the profit from the Muster to the Student Council. We have a fantastic group of thoughtful students on the Student Council and are happy to support their endeavours. This year we will be celebrating Children s Book Week the week after the official book week. We will have our annual Book Week dress as your favourite book character parade on Thursday 30 th August at 9:00am. This year s theme is Find your Treasure SAUSAGE SIZZLE Next Thursday 23 rd August it is Mrs Bullen s shout for lunch Bring along your teddy for a Teddy Bear s Picnic and enjoy a sausage sizzle at first break. 3 Page

IT S COMPETITION TIME ARRRGGGHHH find your treasure in books. This year s Book Week theme is Find your Treasure. Who searches for treasure? Pirates!! The students are being asked to create their own plundering pirate ship model. Build it from recycled materials and make it the most feared pirate ship in all of the seas. Give your pirate ship a name worthy of striking fear into all other ships who pass by you. Pirate ships are due for judging at school on Thursday 30 th August after our Dress as Your Favourite Book Character Parade. 6 Page
