It is a pleasure to once again connect with you through OSHEN. Much water has flown since the last time we communicated. It was heartening to note that Indian contingent of 50+ OHSE professionals participated in 31 st ICOH Congress at Seoul, South Korea. IAOH representation was seen in semi-plenary sessions, workshops, and paper presentations. IAOH made an all out effort to bid for 2021 conference. Regardless of the outcome, India won hearts and due recognition. Hats off to our seniors and mentors for their conviction and efforts! It is a matter of great satisfaction to witness innovative activities by various branches. I had privilege of being part of such events at New Delhi, Mumbai, Karnataka, Jamnagar and Goa. Majority of the branches have observed Occupational Health Day. I wish to appreciate the enormous efforts put in by Dr. Ramnik Parekh and his team in realizing our big dream. The BOHS Manual for informal sector will be formally released during 65 th annual conference of IAOH at Bangalore in February 2016. Dr. S.M. Shanbhag is actively engaged in facilitating the MFOM initiative. Very soon, we are hopeful of signing the MOU with collaborating partners. Preparations are in full swing for OCCUCON 2016 to be held in Bangalore from 17 th 20 th February 2016. The theme of the conference is OH in India: Now and the future Integration and Synergy is the Key. DGFASLI, Ministry of Labor & Employment, Govt of India, ICOH, AIHA, NSC, SCOPE have lent their support to the event; while St John s Medical College and NIMHANS are our collaborating partners. Organizing committee of OCCUCON 2016 is working hard for its success. I urge our members to get actively involved in promotion of occupational health and play a significant role by contributing towards OCCUCON 2016. We request you to register for the conference in big numbers and also help us in mobilizing resources. Let the New Year usher in good fortune, health and safety to our readers. Dr. G. Glimpses of Branch Activities Odisha: World DAY FOR SAFETY & HEALTH AT WORK was celebrated at HRD Centre of Rourkela Steel Plant on 28 th April 2015. This year s theme is Join in Building a culture of prevention on Occupational Safety & Health. Fifty five participants including DSOs (Departmental Safety Officers) from different Departments and Sr Officers from Safety Eng., Env. Eng and Personnel Departments were present in the programme. Dr A K Singh, Director I/C, M&HS was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Dr P K Nanda, ex- joint Director, IGH and President, IAOH, Odisha Branch, Rourkela was chief speaker and spoke on the theme of the Day, He explained the significance of the Day in a scientific and simple way which was very much appreciated by the house. Earlier, Dr T Misra, Sr Dy Director I/C, OHSC welcomed the dignitaries and participants and highlighted the importance of the Day and informed about different activities and new initiatives of OHSC. AP BRANCH IAOH AP Branch organized one Day Seminar / CME on 12.07.2015 at Care Hospital, Nampally, Hyderabad on the eve of IAOH Day. Theme of the above Seminar / CME was OH: From statutory compliance to salutary performance - Challenges & Opportunities. Seminar was inaugurated by Shri Chintan Kishan, Director of Factories, Govt. of Telangana and Dr.D.N.Kumar, Chief Cardiologist and Medical Director, Care Hospital, Nampally, Hyderabad. Dr.J.Vijay Rao, President of IAOH AP Branch delivered welcome address and shared the various activities being undertaken by IAOH AP Branch. He also traced the history of IAOH, contributions by visionaries and its journey in India. Dr.Vivek Chandra Rao opined that there is a need for setting up of Occupational Health Centres in all the small and medium scale industries for early detection of diseases that are caused due to occupational hazards. Director of Factories appreciated the efforts put in by IAOH AP Branch for its contributions to Occupational Health activities in the small and medium scale industrial sectors. He requested Association to extend the same activities to unorganized sectors. He suggested conducting free health camps, medical checkups and health advice; where these basic medical facilities are not available. Dr.D.N.Kumar, Medical Director expressed gratitude to IAOH AP Branch for associating with Care Hospital consecutively for three years in organizing CME Programmes on the occasion of IAOH Day celebrations. He stressed the importance of prevention of disease rather than their cure, which will certainly reduce the financial burden and ensure better health of the employees. West Bengal: AFIH Course 2015-16 in West Bengal have started on 1st December 2015 with 20 (twenty) participants, all senior doctors from around five different states including West Bengal. The course is being conducted& Coordinated by IAOH (West Bengal) in association with the Indian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management (IISWBM), a premier institute established in 1954, and with technical collaboration with Labour Department, Government of West Bengal. 8
Mumbai: OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH DAY 2015 REPORT MUMBAI BRANCH Occupational Health Day programme was held on Saturday, 11th July 2015 at Hotel Fariyas by the IAOH Mumbai Branch. The theme was Occupational Health: From Statutory Compliance to Salutary Performance Challenges and Opportunities Mr Baldev Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary, Ministry of Labour, Government of Maharashtra graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Other dignitaries present were Mr J M Motghare, Director of Industrial Safety and Health and Dr G V Prabhu, National President of the Indian Association of Occupational Health Dr Ajay Sati, Hon Secretary, IAOH Mumbai Branch welcomed the dignitaries and all participants. The programme began with a two minute silence in remembrance of late Dr Prashant Lanjewar, Deputy Director (Medical) Central Labour Institute, Mumbai and member of the IAOH Mumbai Branch who passed away on 2nd July 2015. Dr H R Desai, President IAOH Mumbai Branch,delivered the introductory address. Mr J M Motghare, Director, DISH spoke on the Occupational Health Scenario in Maharashtra with emphasis on statutory provisions to safe guard Occupational Health. Dr G V Prabhu, National President of the IAOH, spoke about the National Scenario of Occupational Health. Dr T Rajgopal, VP Global Medical and Occupational Health, Unilever and Past President of IAOH spoke of the Unilever experience in the field of Occupational Health giving a Global perspective of Best Practices in Occupational Health. Chief Guest, Mr Baldev Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary, Ministry of Labour, Government of Maharashtra delivered the Keynote Address. He spoke about new policies made to propagate Occupational Health and underlined the need to implement Occupational Health Practices in the unorganized sector. Dr Shanbhag spoke on practical issues related to Statutory Compliance and Salutary Performance in the field of Occupational Health. Dr Ramnik Parekh was felicitated with a memento on the occasion for his nomination as Emeritus Member of the International Commission of Occupational Health; only the third Indian to be so nominated. Ramnikbhai shared his experiences as an Occupational Health Physician. Dr Ajay Sati, Hon Secretary, IAOH Mumbai Branch concluded the session with a vote of thanks. GIST OF ACTIVITIES OF IAOH - MUMBAI BRANCH FROM JANUARY 2015 TO OCTOBER 2015 Dr Hiren R Desai was conferred the OHSF- IAOH Mumbai Oration and Dr Ashish Mishra was awarded as Best Resource Person at the 65th National Conference of the IAOH held at Puducherry. The 63rd Annual Conference of the IAOH, Mumbai Branch was held on 18th and 19th April 2015 at the MCA Recreation Centre, BKC, Bandra East, Mumbai. The Theme of the conference was Lifestyle Diseases: Productivity and Performance. Dr K Kozi, President of the ICOH delivered the Keynote Address. The conference was attended by more than 150 Delegates. A CME was organized in collaboration with Asian Institute of Oncology on the topic Occupational Health Hazards and Cancer on 11th September 2015 solely for IAOH Members at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club. Around 45 Doctors from IAOH Mumbai Branch participated in the CME. Delegates were awarded credit hour point for attending the CME. 9
Surat: Surat branch organized several CME s this year covering various topics of interest for Occupational Health physicians. On 15 th Jan 15, at Blue Blossom, Piplod, Dr Divyang Bhatt, MS, from Care Hospital, Surat spoke on Management of head Injury. Twenty three participants were present On 27 th Feb 15, at TGB Surat, Dr Narendra Tanwar from Bankers heart Institute delivered a talk on Recent advances in Management of hypertension. Seventeen participants benefitted from this event. On 13 th March 15, once again at TGB, Surat, a panel discussion on Common Scenarios in Gastroenterology was held with participation from Dr Mayank Kabrawala, Dr Keyur Bhatt, Dr Rajiv Mehta & Dr Pankaj Desai, Surat Institute of Digestive Sciences. There were nineteen participants in this program. An interactive session on Liver disorders by Dr Sudhir shah at Gateway was organized in August 2015. Twenty members participated in this. On 19 th Sep 15, another CME was organized at Gateway Hotel wherein physicians & medical directors of various tertiary Care Hospitals in Surat City & doctors of IAOH Surat Branch interacted on Hazardous chemicals in Industrial areas and their Management ICOH-2015: Dr Aditya Paliwal from Surat branch participated in the congress at Seoul. He made two poster presentations titled Managing HIV/AIDS at workplace & in Community and Building Structured Wellness Program with Occupational Health Services at large Petrochemical Complex Hazira - Reliance Industries Limited. Dr Umang Kothari IAOH member presented a paper at 2nd International Conference on Occupational & Environmental Health (ICOEH) at New Delhi. The topic was: Innovative Practices in Occupational Health at a Large Scale Petrochemical Industry - Task Based Health Risk Assessment. This was also published in The Journal of Advanced Research in Medicine in 2015. First AID Training for paramedics was organized at Sunshine Global Hospital on 16 th August 15. Eighteen paramedics attended the day-long session conducted by Dr Manohar Gemawat. 10
