PREAMBLE The Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (LHN) provides care for around 341,000 people living in the southern metropolitan area of Adelaide as well as providing a number of state-wide services, and services to those in regional areas. More than 7,000 skilled staff provide high quality patient care, education, research and health promoting services. Southern Adelaide LHN provides a range of acute and sub acute health services for people of all ages, and has three hospitals, Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Hospital and the Repatriation General Hospital. Primary Health and Transition services delivers a range of services across the southern metropolitan area of Adelaide, with a focus on providing chronic disease management programs in the community, and transition and hospital substitution and avoidance programs targeted at chronic disease and frail aged. SUMMARY OF THE BROAD PURPOSE OF THE POSITION and its responsibilities/duties The Cardiac Ultrasonographer/Cardiac Technician will be trained in ECG s recording, Holter reporting, Blood Pressure monitoring and with stress exercise tests, (with the possibility of pacing and cath lab exposure dependent on availability) once training has been completed ~ 12-18 months - further training in one or more of the following modalities Cardiac Sonography, Electrophysiology and or Pacing (dependent on availability)
The Cardiac Ultrasonographer/Cardiac Technician will train in routine cardiac ultrasound tests (as and when training programme available) and provides preliminary reports as requested by the Medical officer in the assessment of patients with proven or suspected heart disease. 3. REPORTING/WORKING RELATIONSHIPS (to whom the person reports, staff for whom the person is responsible, and other significant connections and working relationships within the organisation) Supervisor Reports to: Senior Consultant Cardiologist in charge of Cardiac Ultrasonography Supervisor s Position: Senior Cardiac Sonographer Subject Position: Cardiac Ultrasonographer/Cardiac Technician Positions supervised: Nil 4. Contribute to the Ultrasonography Services and Cardiology Services by: Performing echocardiography under supervision and generate provisional reports. This includes routine transthoracic echo, contrast and 3D echo. Also required to assist with transoesophageal procedures and stress echo (exercise/ pharmacological). Communicating effectively with patients, members of the health care team and clinical investigators. Conduct tests, interpret findings and generate provisional reports for ambulatory diagnostic tests. This includes 24-hour Holter, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, and loop recorders.
Contribute to interventional cardiac catheterisation procedures. Perform tests and interpret results during coronary angiography/angioplasty, right heart catheterisation, ASD/PFO/LAA closure implants, valvuloplasty, alcohol septal ablation, percutaneous valve implantation, renal denervation, when available. Contribute echocardiography and emergency procedures when necessary. Assist with pacemaker implantation. Conduct tests to follow-up implantable cardiac devices, including pacemakers, automatic cardiac defibrillators and loop recorders. Provide concise reports on findings and liaise with senior staff over results. Assist with follow-up clinics, trouble-shooting and reprograming pacemakers under supervision. Maintain accurate records. When available Perform conventional electrophysiology and ablation studies under supervision. May be required to operate 3D mapping systems under supervision. Liaise with Senior Scientific Officers, Fellows and Electrophysiologists during procedures. Set up and maintain equipment. Prepare records and data for interpretation by Electrophysiologists. Assist on rotating roster for emergency on-call services for interventional cath lab procedures and pacemaker services if required. Participate in departmental research projects and contribute presentations at weekly intradepartmental meetings. Assist in the maintenance of accurate records and the provision of quality patient care by taking part in quality control reviews and taking action to correct, prevent and avoid errors wherever appropriate. Contribute to the safety of all staff by reporting safety problems and equipment breakdown/malfunction to the appropriate person.
