13th Annual Texas Pediatric Emergency Medicine Conference Activity Directors Friday and Saturday February 19-20, 2010 Houston Marriott Medical Center Houston, Texas Presented by Baylor College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics Co-sponsored by
Needs According to the National Center for Health Statistics Health Care Survey released in August 2008, the annual number of emergency department visits increased from 90.3 million in 1996 to more than 119 million in 2006, with the number of visits for patients under 15 years of age totalling 22 million. Emergency departments (EDs) now serve as the primary source of health care for a growing segment of the US population. EDs are under increasing pressure to provide non-urgent, non-emergency care for more patients in addition to providing immediate care for life-threatening situations such as injuries and poisonings. ED physicians and other healthcare professionals must be prepared for the challenges. Target Audience Emergency medicine physicians, primary care physicians, pediatricians, physician assistants, and nurses. Objectives At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to: Assess infants and children presenting with fever, perform the appropriate work-up to identify those at risk for serious bacterial infection, and determine when blood cultures should be ordered. Identify children presenting with chest pain due to emergent or urgent causes that require work-up and referral to a pediatric cardiologist. Diagnose and treat children presenting with seizures using the current treatment guidelines and identify those patients who need referral to a pediatric neurologist. Properly place splints and arrange appropriate referral for follow up for children and adolescents with fractures. Identify the signs of medical neglect and abuse in children, initiate appropriate treatment, and utilize resource options for the patient s long term care that ensure the health and safety of the child. Initiate appropriate fluid hydration and insulin dosing strategies, as well as manage any symptoms of cerebral edema. Educational Methods Lectures Case Presentations Panel Discussions Syllabus Evaluation Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias.
