The following is an extract from RI information to all Clubs: JUNE - ROTARY FELLOWSHIP MONTH June is designated Rotary Fellowships Month to recognize the importance of international fellowship and goodwill among Rotarians with similar recreational and vocational interests, promote increased participation in fellowships, and increase understanding of this program. The RI Board encourages these groups to celebrate Rotary Fellowships Month through projects, activities, and events. When we talk about "Rotary Fellowships", we actually refer to the groups of Rotarians, Rotarian spouses and Rotaractors who join together to: Share a common interest in worthwhile recreational activities (sports, hobbies, etc.); Further their vocational development through acquaintance with others of the same profession; Make new friends around the world; Explore new opportunities for service; and have fun and enhance their experience in Rotary. What are the benefits for Rotarians in joining the Rotary Fellowships? Fellowship provide opportunities for Rotarians to make lasting friendships outside their own Club, District or country. Fellowships contribute to the advancement of world understanding and peace. Also, Fellowships serve as an incentive for attracting new members to Rotary and retaining our existing members. Rotary Fellowship, together with the Rotarian Action Groups, serve as an effective tool in promoting membership development and should be actively promoted in our Districts. Highlights of our Club Meeting, Tue 19th May 2015 Opening: The meeting was called to order by Sergeant Robert Leach followed by the Rotary Invocation and toasts to the Queen and Australia by Rob Fenton, The Chairman for the evening was Tom Thorpe. Past President Vincent Li: PP Vincent welcomed members and explained Trevor was absent due to business interstate. Vincent welcomed members, guests, and Guest Speaker Tim Symons. Vincent reminded Members to register for the District Change-over Dinner on 27th June, (poster with details this Bulletin). Register with Secretary Timothy Lynn. Secretary Timothy Lynn: Regarding Board Members for 2015-16 announced at the AGM on 28-10-14, Tim advised a change due to Charlie Xu s travel and another project committee commitments, for Ray McLeod-Dryden to become Director Youth Services. Timothy also advised he received a Certificate of Appreciation from Operation Cleft for RCBH recent donation. Sergeant Robert Leach: Robert issued a strict warning to photographer Melissa that her digital photos of the Sergeant should NOT be inserted into the Bulletin! However the Sergeant did such a great job of implementing fines, specifically across 21 members, that Melissa found it too hard not to provide at least one little image. Sergeant s Joke of the week kept up the current high standard. A doctor won the argument with a motor mechanic of who should be paid more to transplant a heart or replace an engine. Try doing the job with the engine running said the doctor! 2
200 Sunglasses for Fiji Director Youth Services, Rae Harding, has requested all members to find as many pairs of old or no longer needed sunglasses to donate for a special cause for the poor and needy people of Fiji. Please bring glasses to our Club mee ng and give to Rae ASAP Stamps & Foreign Coin Collection Used stamps and foreign coins are still raising money for Rotary District projects. Please continue to bring foreign coins to Tuesday Club meetings for the coin jar and tear off stamps with 1cm around them for Madeleine Smith who will bundle them up and send them to the District collection centre. Presentation by Robert Leach District 9810 Conference 2016 On behalf of District Governor Elect David Tolstrup and the Conference Organising Committee I am pleased invite all Box Hill Rotarians and Partners to join us at the Rotary District 9810 Annual Conference to be conducted at the Riverlinks Conference Venue in Shepparton, between Friday 18 th March and Sunday, 20 th March, 2016. Shepparton is an ideal location for our Conference as it offers excellent convention facilities, ample accommodation for delegates and is a comfortable drive from Melbourne, generally a little over two hours, along safe highway thoroughfares. The Theme for our 2016 Conference is Power of the Past Force of the Future which the Committee believes epitomises Rotary International s current focus and position as we rapidly progress through these early years of the 21 st Century. Our Committee is looking forward to presenting an exciting Conference in 2016 and we have already assembled a stimulating array of very interesting Keynote Speakers who will be most informative and entertaining. Conference sessions for 2016 will commence with the formal Opening Session on the afternoon of Friday, 18 th March and will conclude with an informal lunch on Sunday, 20 th March. This timing allows for our Club to conduct our separate Club Dinner on the Friday evening whilst the Saturday evening Gala Dinner will have the theme, My Favourite Television Show, and attendees will be invited to dress to reflect their favourite television programs or heroes. Subsidies which we propose will be available to Box Hill Rotarians who contribute to the Conference include:- Reduced Registration costs for all Club Members who are available during the Conference Concessions for Club Members who are required to be at the Conference Venue in Shepparton on Thursday. At this point you will be pleased to learn that accommodation in Shepparton has already been booked for Box Hill Rotarians. I would like to acknowledge the assistance and cooperation I have already received from the Members of the Conference Committee and we all look forward to a successful event next March. Thank you. Box Hill Institute Apprentice of the Year Alan Broadhead Awards At the Rotary Club of Box Hill Meeting on 19th May, Director of Vocational Service, PP Tom Thorpe, presented our Rotary Box Hill Alan Broadhead Awards to the two top Apprentices of the Year in their categories. They were James Robinson, Cert III in Refrigeration & Air Condition and Marlon Young-Healy, Cert III in Carpentry. Both are remarkable young men with a great future ahead of them and Rotary Box Hill congratulate them in their achievements and wish them rewarding and successful careers. Topic: Box Hill Institute Speaker: Tim Symons, General Manager Vocational College Tim s role is the strategic leadership and direction of the Box Hill Institute Vocational College. This drives the major activities within; The School of Health Sciences The School of Business Services Skills and Information & Communication Technology The School of Industry and Trades Tim is responsible for leading strategic development, implementation and accreditation of VET programs in each of the schools to achieve exceptional outcomes for learners and clients. He leads the development and implementation of business plans and budgets to successfully achieve targets across all three schools Tim holds a Bachelor of Arts and Certificate IV in Training & Assessment and has undertaken study in leadership, consulting, project management and financial management. Tim explained to Members although apprenticeships and traineeships are the flagships of Box Hill Institute but other courses are growing. The Institute now has a broad range of courses to support small business enterprise and TAFE micro businesses in addition to Degree and Masters courses. Box Hill Institute considers it is a community educator and also attracts a significant number of overseas students. The drop-out rate is very low at the Institute and many students leaving Universities after first semester join Box Hill for vocational education and training. Box Hill also caters for mature age students at the centre for Adult Education.
