4. SCOPE AND RANGE. Responsible to the Antimicrobial Pharmacist. Responsible for influencing the use of antimicrobials within NHS Borders To promote, audit, monitor, review and report on findings of antimicrobial prescribing initiatives. 5. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Antimicrobial Prescribing To influence optimal prescribing and administration of antimicrobials at a clinical level To help develop and implement innovative approaches to the management of antimicrobial prescribing. To assist in the development, implementation and audit of NHS Borders-wide prescribing, administration and supply policies and guidelines to encourage optimal antimicrobial prescribing and in particular to contribute to the management of hospital acquired infection e.g. Clostridium difficile and MRSA. To prepare and present reports for the antimicrobial management team. To help ensure cost effective use of antimicrobials Help identify training needs for nursing, medical staff and pharmacy staff related to antimicrobial prescribing and support Antimicrobial Management Team in the development of training packages to meet these needs Assist in the delivery of training to nursing, medical staff and pharmacy staff related to antimicrobial prescribing Update current skills and knowledge in relevant practice areas as required. - Participate in any internal or external courses, meetings, conferences as appropriate - Maintenance of competency in appropriate professional activities Assist in the maintenance and update of departmental policies and procedures as appropriate Other Duties Deputise for antimicrobial pharmacist in issues related to antibiotic prescribing when appropriate Compliance with NHS Borders policies Quality, Audit and Research Participates in and undertakes research projects relating to antimicrobial prescribing. Plan, prepare and present reports, some of which will be at AMT and Infection Control Committee (ICC) level. Evaluation of studies relevant to antimicrobial prescribing in order to utilise in practice. Contributes to multi-disciplinary projects Provides research evidence for members of the multi-professional teams to promote clinical effectiveness. Develops and maintains protocols and policies based on research. Develops and audits standards as appropriate, and facilitates others in applying relevant findings to practice. Establishes and maintain links by liaising with other professionals from within and outside the hospital to share best practice and promote excellence. 6. SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT Use of Ascribe computerised stock control and dispensing system and EIS reporting system Use of Microsoft office including spreadsheets, word processing, presentation, reports, procedures, forms, notices, posters Patient Information Systems i.e. Trakcare, Laboratory reports Use of computer assisted learning packages

DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS Will require to make decisions and judgements related to: The development and implementation of prescribing, administration and supply policies and guidelines Communication of policies and guidelines to the multidisciplinary team 8. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS Liaise with patients regarding antibiotics prescribed. Liaise with clinical pharmacists in relation to antibiotic prescriptions. Liaise with medical and nursing staff in wards and departments to identify and resolve any prescribing and administration issues relating to antimicrobial prescribing. Liaise with medical, nursing, pharmacy and clinical audit staff when carrying out audit and research projects. Liaise with the Consultant Microbiologist and other members of the Antimicrobial Management Team Liaise with members of the Infection Control Team. Present verbal and written reports at AMT, ICC and other meetings when appropriate 9. PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB Long periods viewing VDU Mobility to visit within the BGH and health premises in NHS Borders. 10. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB Ensuring prescribing policies are implemented and followed. Communicating often contentious issues to clinical staff. Management of time. Producing timely and accurate reports. PERSON SPECIFICATION For the post of Lead Nurse Antimicrobial Prescribing Below are the essential and desirable knowledge, training (including qualifications) and experience required to do this job. ESSENTIAL 1. Registered nurse 2. Sound clinical background based on 4 years post-qualification experience and evidence of continuing professional development 3. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills 4. Excellent presentation skills to facilitate teaching of healthcare professionals, from 1:1 to large group presentations 5. Excellent numeracy skills 6. Experience of data interpretation and clinical audit of prescribing. 7. Able to effectively interpret medical case notes when performing audits in relation to patients condition and the antimicrobial medication prescribed. Able to understand the relevance of use of antibiotics in different circumstances in relation to local guidelines. 8. Able to work independently, organise and prioritise own work schedules and be flexible in response to changing work needs. 9. Able to work unsupervised on a day-to-day basis. Work will be supervised by line manager, but post holder will be responsible for the method of achievement of agreed targets. 10. Practical experience of intravenous administration of antibiotics in current clinical use 11. Car driver and valid driving licence DESIRABLE 1. Excellent computer skills including use of presentation software and spreadsheets 2. Special interest in and knowledge of antimicrobials, their use and patterns of resistance, both locally and nationally and up to date practical experience. 3. Awareness of policies governing antimicrobial use, and their application in clinical practice 4. Experience of active involvement in development and delivery of education and training 5. Experience of active involvement in change initiatives such as guideline development, implementation and monitoring including cross boundary working and engagement with a range of stakeholders. 6. Current or recent experience of the national agenda and local implementation supporting antimicrobial stewardship in NHS Scotland 7. Knowledge of general BGH policies and procedures
