Welcome Home! Welcome to your Connecticut College Orientation! The Orientation program will introduce you to the core principles that govern how we learn and live together as a community. Throughout the next four years, you will make connections with different students, faculty, and staff members here on campus that will help you grow and expand your knowledge about yourself and the world around you. This knowledge will enable you to make connections across the different aspects of your academic and extracurricular life both on and off campus. Here are some steps for success at Connecticut College: Take responsibility for your learning and your choices Engage constructively with each other and the larger world Make reflective choices that balance your career, commitments and personal wellbeing The Orientation program will help you connect the expectations, opportunities and resources available so you can begin to build your Connecticut College experience. As a result of participating in Orientation, you will: Understand the mission and core values of Connecticut College Learn about academic and co-curricular campus resources and ways to become an involved citizen and campus leader Understand the educational and social benefits of engaging with diversity Understand the rights and responsibilities of upholding freedom of expression within a residential community Design a balanced academic schedule for the fall semester in conjunction with your advising team and dive deeply into the Connections curriculum Embrace the importance of the Connecticut College Honor Code and articulate the expectations entailed by signing the Honor Code Recognize the connection between wellbeing and academic success Learn how to live in a community with your peers and how your behaviors and actions have an impact on your community Understand what it means to be an active bystander Forge new friendships through fun and enjoyable social interactions As a result of participating in Orientation, parents and families of first-year students will: Discover the depth of Connecticut College resources for student success, while developing a realistic perspective about the types of challenges students may face during the first year of college Recognize their role as partners with Connecticut College in an effort to help students achieve the best possible education Learn about expectations for behavior related to a student s academic and social development Share your Orientation Day memories by using the hashtag #Home2Conn! 2 3

After graduating from Conn with a major in Chemistry, she went on to receive her Ph.D. and ultimately work in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, receiving the USDA s Distinguished Service Medal. The donor hopes you will enjoy the festivities this week named in her honor.

Convocation is celebrated on Tempel Green, the very center of our campus, and will include a procession of faculty, class officers and all first-year students. Sunil Bhatia, Associate Professor of Human Development, will deliver the keynote address, Finding Magical Doors: Notes on Borders, Race and Belonging. Following the ceremony, the campus community is invited to the Convocation Picnic on Chapel Green. In case of rain, Convocation will be in Palmer Auditorium and the Convocation Picnic will be in Harris Refectory. *All new students will meet at 4:15 p.m., on the west (green) side of Palmer Auditorium to line up for the procession.* 16 17

Available Now & Online Placement Tests, Information Sessions and Auditions Placement tests and auditions are scheduled over an extended period of time so that you may take more than one. They are important if you intend to continue in any of these areas at any time over the next four years. All levels of ability are encouraged to participate. If you miss a session, please contact the chair of the department offering the tests or auditions. French Hispanic Studies For students who have not taken the SAT exam in French or do not have an AP score of 4 or 5: Online Placement Test (Transparent Language): Go to: http://www.transparent.com/learnfrench/proficiency-test.html for an online proficiency test. It will take approximately 40 minutes to complete, though you may take as long as you wish. Submit your score (out of 150) at https://goo.gl/forms/ v8uoggmm7s253mvw2 prior to Aug. 26. Strongly recommended for all students planning to take a mathematics course, particularly those planning to take any course in the calculus sequence. Results: Will be given to you at interview. Noon-12:45 p.m. Introductory Workshop. For all students interested in enrolling in THE 104: Acting I: Preparation in the Fall or Spring semester. Enrollment in this Core Course is limited, and this workshop is highly recommended for students interested in Theater as a major or minor. Palmer Auditorium, Room 202. LISTED IN ORDER OF START TIMES Biology Chinese Dance 4:30-5:30 p.m. All students interested in taking BIO 106 Cells or BIO 110 Accelerated Cell Biology should come and take a written assessment that will help us better understand the biology experiences of our incoming class. We will have you answer questions about data interpretation and solve biological problems. We will also ask you about your high school biology experiences. Many students have not taken biology since their first year of high school, while others have had biology just last year. Professor Eastman will be available to answer any questions about the Biology courses. Olin 014.
