STUDENT APPLICATION MATERIALS FOR THE BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (BSURF) Descriptin The Bilgical Sciences Undergraduate Research Fellwship (BSURF) has been established t supprt undergraduate research pprtunities in the Divisin f Bilgical Sciences within the Franklin Cllege f Arts and Sciences. The fellwship prvides financial assistance t a student wh has nt had an pprtunity t participate in a mentred research experience (paid, vlunteer, r fr credit) since matriculating t the University f Gergia. An award f $3,000.00 will be prvided t the recipient f the Fellwship and paid in tw installments in the Summer f 2018. The research is t be cmpleted during the Summer Thru sessin term f 2018. Eligibility Applicants must be current Bichemistry and Mlecular Bilgy, Bilgy, Cellular Bilgy, Genetics, Marine Sciences, Micrbilgy, r Plant Bilgy majrs in their 1st thrugh 3rd year and have nt had the pprtunity t engage in mentred, scientific research. Award requirements 1. The student applicant must btain a signed agreement frm frm a Faculty member wh is willing t mentr the student thrugh a research experience. 2. A cmplete BSURF Applicatin Packet must be submitted t Rm 411 in the Bilgical Sciences building by 5:00 pm n March 15th, 2018. Only cmpleted Packets will receive cnsideratin. See belw fr Applicatin Packet requirements. 3. The awardee must cmplete at least 20 hurs f wrk per week fr 8 weeks during the mnths f June and July (Summer Thru sessin). 4. The field f research must be bilgical in fcus. Areas which may qualify include, but are nt limited t: Cellular Bilgy, Mlecular Bilgy, Bichemistry, Eclgy, Entmlgy, Organismal Bilgy, Plant Bilgy, Micrbilgy, Marine Bilgy, Bipsychlgy, Genetics, Biinfrmatics, Bimedical and Biengineering. The awardee and faculty member must agree n a suitable research prject r activities. A cmmittee cnsisting f members frm Divisin faculty, pst-dctral assciates, undergraduate crdinatrs, advisrs, r graduate students will serve as the Award Cmmittee and will evaluate all submitted prpsals. 5. The awardee must cmplete mandatry lab safety training.

The degree f the awardee s invlvement in labratry activities is at the discretin f the Faculty member and shuld clsely fllw the Faculty-submitted research statement detailing what the student will be undertaking in the Faculty s lab. Hwever, in additin t the awardee s primary research, it is strngly encuraged fr the student t participate in multiple activities (e.g. participating in grup meetings and/ r jurnal clubs) in rder t learn as much as pssible abut scientific research. 7. The awardee must prvide hand-written thank-yu ntes/letters t the dnrs f the Fellwship award funds as well as pssibly attend a thank-yu lunch r dinner event t meet the dnrs. 8. The student is required t submit tw riginal, written papers via electrnic submissin n the first day f finals in Summer Thru sessin. These papers include ne reflectin paper and ne research paper. The papers must be emailed t bilgy@uga.edu. Hand-delivered, hard cpies will nt be accepted. See belw fr guidelines and requirements n the tw papers. Applicatin Prcess Submissin An Applicatin Packet must be submitted t Rm 411 in the Bilgical Sciences building n r befre March 15 th, 2018 by 5:00 pm. The Applicatin Packet cnsists f: 1) Faculty/Student agreement frm signed and initialed by bth the applicant and the faculty spnsr (page 3 f this dcument). 2) A ne-page persnal statement that addresses why the applicant wishes t participate in research and what his r her interests and gals are, bth fr the Fellwship and ptential pst-secndary educatin and prfessinal plans. 3) A printed versin f the applicant s transcript r degree audit (frm DegreeWrks) shwing verall GPA, successful cmpletin f CHEM 1211+L, BIOL 1107+L, and either cmpletin f, r enrllment in, BIOL 1108+L. After Applicatin Packet submissin, a subset f applicants will be selected fr in-persn interviews with the Fellwship Award cmmittee in rder t becme mre familiar with the applicant. After all interviews have been cnducted, the Award Cmmittee will underg a review and selectin prcess. Review and Selectin The Fellwship is merit-based, taking int accunt the student s persnal statement, interview, and verall GPA. The greatest weight will be given t the persnal statement. The selected applicant will be ntified the first week f April, 2018.
