(1) Helmets. Riders wearing PPE have 40% less permanent physical damage (7 days less time in hospital) after an accident. (a) For personnel riding MCs and ATVs in the United States, helmets will be certified to meet DOT Safety Standard No. 218, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Standard 22 05, British Standard 6658, or Snell Standard M2005 according to DODI , 20 April 2009, Change 2, references (w), (x), (y), and (z). (b) For personnel riding MCs and ATVs outside the United States, helmets must meet the HN standards. In those instances where the HN has no standard, helmets must, at a minimum, meet the DOT Federal motor vehicle safety standard. (c) All helmets will be properly fastened under the chin. * Italy: Must meet ECE requirements As of 29 Apr 14

(2) Eye protection. Eye protection must be designed to meet or exceed ANSI Z87.1, reference (z) for impact and shatter resistance (includes goggles, wraparound glasses, or a full-face shield (properly attached to a helmet). A windshield or fairing does not constitute eye protection. (3) Foot protection. Foot protection includes sturdy over-the-ankle footwear that affords protection for the feet and ankles (durable leather or ballistic-type cloth athletic shoes that cover the ankles may be worn). 25% of riders experience ankle injuries in an accident. As of 29 Apr 14

(4) Protective clothing. Protective clothing includes long-sleeved shirt or jacket, long trousers, and full-fingered gloves or mittens made from leather or other abrasionresistant material. MC jackets and pants constructed of abrasion-resistant materials (such as leather, Kevlar, or Cordura ) and containing impact-absorbing padding are strongly encouraged. Riders are encouraged to select PPE that incorporates fluorescent colors and retro-reflective material. 80% of riders injure their legs in an accident. As of 29 Apr 14

USAREUR CG Policy Letter a. Soldiers assigned to Army in Europe units will wear a vest, jacket, upper outer garment, or motorcycle clothing that incorporates fluorescent and highly reflective material at all times when operating or riding as a passenger on the vehicles described above, on and off post, regardless of local civilian requirements. Military uniforms, including Army physical fitness test wear that is designed to be reflective, do not meet this criterion. The number of accidents prevented because the rider was seen by other drivers cannot be determined. As of 29 Apr 14

USAREUR CG Policy Letter a. Civilian employees (including contractors, but excluding local national employees) and Family members will wear fluorescent and reflective outer garments at all times when operating or riding as a passenger on the vehicles described in paragraph 2 while on U.S. Army installations and are highly encouraged to wear this type of equipment off installations. 60% of riders suffer arm or shoulder injuries in an accident. As of 29 Apr 14
