The following pages contain a brief biographical history of the person, or persons, who created or collected these papers; followed by a general description of the collection in the scope and content note. Biographical Note Edmund Pepperell Easterbrook ( ), Methodist Episcopal Church minister and Chief of Chaplains for the United States Army, was born at Torquay, England, on December 22, Easterbrook graduated from the College of Torquay before coming to the United States to attend Drew Theological Seminary. After graduating, he was appointed by the Troy Annual Conference in 1892 to the Stuyvesant Landing church ( ) which was located on the banks of the Hudson River. His next ministerial appointment sent him to Amsterdam, New York, which was his last local parish within the Methodist Episcopal Church connection. In 1898, Easterbrook became the Chaplain of the Second New York Volunteer Infantry stationed in Cuba. Easterbrook s other tours of duty included the Philippines and Germany. While in Germany, he became Senior Chaplain of the Army of Occupation. Later President Calvin Coolidge appointed Easterbrook as Chief of Chaplains of the Army of the United States. He officially took over the position on April 6, The following year Chaplain Easterbrook retired from the Army and lived at Fort Monroe,Virginia, until his death on January 18, Easterbrook is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Scope Note The Edmund Pepperell Easterbrook papers focus more on the end of his active ministry in the United States Army rather than its beginning with a few exceptions. The bulk of the records are sermons Easterbrook preached at various Army bases in the United States during the 1920's. Certificates make up another large segment of the collection. These documents illustrate his ordination in the Methodist Episcopal Church and Army career. One certificate of note is his commission to Chief of Chaplains. Holy Land artifacts reflect his 1897 trip but have little historical value. One other item of note is a lantern slide lecture book documenting the 1919 Methodist Centenary Celebration held in Columbus, Ohio. The rest of the materials relate to various aspects of his ministerial work before his retirement in Arrangement Material has been arranged in the following manner.
