3 Scenario Descriptions 1805 Introductory Scenario (solo, or two players; requires only basic set) Napoleon attacks Austria in 1805, culminating in the Battle of Austerlitz in which he decisively defeated Austria and Russia. The French can follow the Danube (historical), attack through Bohemia, or come from Italy. Will Austria fall back to join the slow Russians and risk losing most of its production, or stay forward and risk losing most of its army? Campaign Game (requires only basic set) France must be prepared to take on three opponents at once (Russia, Austria and Prussia), plus a fourth one (Britain) that finances the others. Napoleon must nimbly defeat each one at a time, or risk facing them all together. 2 - France, All other nations 3 - France, Austria/Britain, Russia/Prussia 4 - France, Britain/Russia, Austria, Prussia 5 - France, Britain, Russia, Austria, Prussia 1809 Scenario (requires only basic set) Austria has completed Army Reform, increased the size of its army and is ready to take on Napoleon again -- but without Prussia or Russia to help. 2 - France and Russia, All other nations 3 - France, Britain/Austria, Russia (only recommended if the optional rule for full Russian participation is included) Scenario (requires basic set plus Peninsular War set and expansion maps are optional) Napoleon must deal with the "Spanish ulcer" and a resurgent Austria at once. 2 - France, All other nations 3 - France, Britain/Prussia, Austria/Russia 4 - France, Britain/Prussia, Austria, Russia 5 - France, Britain, Russia, Austria, Prussia Scenario Zenith and Nadir (requires all games in set) France is victorious everywhere but Spain - and that is encouraging Russia to resist once again. Can Napoleon defeat the Russians once and for all while handcuffed in Spain, or will he try to defeat Spain before Russia can liberate Germany and get Prussia and Austria as allies? 2 - France, All other nations 3 - France, Austria/Britain, Russia/Prussia 4 - France, Britain/Russia, Austria, Prussia 5 - France, Britain, Russia, Austria, Prussia 1812 Scenario -- The Patriotic War (requires basic set plus expanded maps) Napoleon puts together his largest army ever to defeat his biggest continental rival. But can La Grande Armee repeat its successes in such a large nation against a foe that is prepared to fight it? Scenario German and French Campaigns (requires basic set or add Peninsular War) Following the loss of most of his army, Napoleon must scramble to retain his client states, and 3

4 rebuild his army. Can he hold the now-united Coalition off long enough to achieve the impossible yet again? 1815 Scenario (requires basic set and Peninsular War set) Can Napoleon retake France and return it to glory? Or will he face another Waterloo? 2 - France, All other nations 1807/ Peninsular War Scenarios (requires basic set plus Peninsular War set) A long scenario, starting in either 1807 or 1809, with a small number of units, the players will have to face the limitations of a small war in a poor nation with terrible terrain for campaigning and a long sea coast that favors Britain's best asset - the Royal Navy. 2 - France, Britain & allies Campaign Game (requires basic game and all expansions) The entire French Napoleonic Wars, from 1805 to Up to 396 operation turns and 66 Strategic Turns. Expect to play for 130 hours or so. That's about 32 weeks if you play 4 hours once a week. Playtests averaged about 4 months. 2 - France, All other nations (the Coalition) 3 - France, Russia, Britain/Prussia/Austria. Alternatively, Russia with either Prussia or Austria, Britain with either Prussia or Austria 4 - France, Britain, Russia, Austria/Prussia 5 - France, Britain, Russia, Austria, Prussia 4

5 1805 Introductory Scenario - The War of the Third Coalition (France vs Austria, Russia, and Britain) July-Aug Operational Turn 6 end of Nov-Dec 1805 BACKGROUND Napoleon made himself King of Italy in 1805, which contributed to Austria s decision to declare war on France, as Italy had long been in Austria s sphere of influence. Austria had also dominated the Holy Roman Empire, which meant control over Bavaria, Wurttemberg and much of the rest of western Germany. However, the presence of a strong France had disrupted that as well. Austria had had enough and moved against Bavaria with the goal of taking and holding the fortress of Ulm until the Russians arrived. Then, a joint assault on France would ensue. Napoleon wasn t about to wait for that, however. France starts at war with Britain and Russia. Jan-Feb 1806 or Austrian defeat, whichever comes last - count the marshals in play, withdraw them from the map, except for Napoleon and one other marshal of his choice. He then selects a like number at random from those who were just removed or are in the Mobilization Box (that is, are eligible to be in play). The French player may reject one with a "2" loyalty and draw a replacement. The French player should end with the same number of marshals as he removed. He then places them with any French stack. All marshals are available for mobilization except: Bessieres, Moncey, Jourdan, Lefebvre, Oudinot, Macdonald, Victor, Suchet, Grouchy, Poniatowski, Eugene, Rapp, Vandamme, Reynier Coalition Any nation at war with France is a member of the Coalition. Russia and Britain start the scenario at war with France, and are the only Coalition members at the beginning. Austrians Austria is not at war at the start. The earliest it may declare war is the Strategic Turn of Sep/Oct. Due to existing treaties, Austria may not leave the territories of the Austrian Empire or intimidate any client states until Sep/Oct 1805 Strategic Turn. Austria is fully mobilized. Army Reform has not occurred. Morale at Start = 4 (the annual option to raise National Morale by one has already been used) Balance =45 production Production = 18 (16 from Austrian cities plus 2 from Venice) 6

7 Maintenance at Start = 8 (8 leaders) Austrian Set Up and Movement Restrictions. The largest Austrian stack on or north of an East- West line drawn through Bern (Helvetian Republic) must be led by Mack until Vienna is lost or Mack suffers a combat defeat of any size. The Austrian player is given more flexibility in this scenario version by allowing Charles to move north of this line immediately. (Optional Rule: Players wanting a more historical limitation should keep Charles and his forces south of the East-West line, except for one corps (5 factors) which may move north at any time. The remainder of Charles' force may move north if Mack is defeated. Alternatively, for a nonhistorical exploration of Austrian capabilities, allow the Austrians a free set-up, with no more than 12 Infantry in each of two hexes, and no more than 4 Infantry in any other hex. Replace Mack with Ferdinand in the set-up.) Mack is Defeated. If Mack is defeated, or if France captures Vienna, he is removed from the game and replaced by Ferdinand, who is an Army Commander. Special Rule for Austrian Retreats. Austrian units that are forced to retreat off the map may not return to play. They are not considered to be casualties, however. Russia may not enter Austria or Prussia unless that nation is at war with France. If either (or both) is at war with France, then Russia is allied with them. Russia has other forces mobilized elsewhere off the map, and therefore has no additional forces available for mobilization at start. Russian units may trace a line of communications to a depot that is on the eastern edge of the map (this depot is presumed to connect with others leading to a Russian production city). Russian replacements appear on any eastern edge hex in Russia. 7

Up to 20% of Britain's production balance may be supplied to any other major power nation or nations, but only if the recipient is currently at war with France. At Start: Morale at Start = 4 (the annual option to raise National Morale by one has already been used) Army Reform has already occurred. All sea zones have the minimum number of British ships to cause a blockade of Frenchcontrolled production cities and to allow Coalition forces to conduct a sea invasion. London Moore 2 British Inf, 0-2 supply unit. Production Balance = 19 Production Total = 22 (+2 for Naples if St. Cyr appears on map -- see France) Britain may produce a limit of 2 new infantry, but may replace them as allowed within the rules. If the units are destroyed, they may be rebuilt, up to the limit. (This supersedes the production limit of 7 per year as described in the basic rules.) OPTIONAL Sweden joins Coalition in the Aug/Sept 1805 Strategic Turn. Stockholm s production is added to Britain s total. For Sweden s set up, see Sweden under Diplomacy rules. No more than 2 Swedish Infantry may be outside of Swedish territory. Its ships must stay in the Baltic and other seas east of Denmark. British leaders may lead Swedish forces. 8

9 Campaign Game - The Wars of the Third and Fourth Coalitions Sept-Oct 1805 Operational Turn 6 - end of May-Jun 1807 Basic set only BACKGROUND See 1805 Scenario Background. In 1805 France sought an alliance with Prussia against Austria, Prussia s old enemy. However, Prussian leaders distrusted France and declined. Instead Prussia mobilized its army. This process was slow and by the time it was completed, France had already defeated Austria. Prussia quickly negotiated a treaty with France and demobilized. In short, Prussia gained Hanover by giving up Neuchatel. In 1806 Prussia entered a formal alliance with France. But then France created the Confederation of the Rhine, which Prussia perceived as a threat. It mobilized again and sought Russian assistance. Again, Napoleon moved too quickly and decisively. This scenario allows the players to explore alternatives to the historical approaches. France may go after Prussia first. The Coalition might gather all four major powers simultaneously against France. 10 Prussia Prussia is at peace and is not mobilized. May declare war on France when Austria at war with France or any time after Morale at start = 4 (the annual option to raise National Morale by one has already been used in 1805) Balance = 0 production Production: Total = 16 from 14 in Prussia + 2 from Saxony (Dresden) Maintenance at start = 3 (3 leaders) Special Rule for Prussian Retreats. Prussian units that are forced to retreat off the map may not return to play. They are not considered to be casualties, however. SET UP Pick Brunswick and three other leaders. These leaders are available: Rüchel, Lestocq, Hohenlohe, Blücher, King Frederick, Würtemberg, Saxe-Weimar, Kalcreuth. Any of these leaders not picked go in the Mobilization Box and are eligible for activation. Place these units in the designated places: Dresden 2 Saxon Infantry Brunswick (2 west of Magdeburg) 1 Prussian Inf Place 17 infantry factors in production cities and forts (at the player's option up to two (2) factors of the 17 infantry can be moved, one each to Wesel and/or Minden). Place one each of the four previously picked leaders in Berlin, Magdeburg and Königsberg and with any one of the infantry stacks somewhere else. Place four (4) depots in any eligible hex, one depot per hex. Available for mobilization: Place 23 infantry factors, 3 Artillery and 3 Cavalry and the remaining inactivated leaders in the Ready for Mobilization Box. One of these leaders must be mobilized and his maintenance fee paid each time five (5) factors are mobilized, or any portion thereof. 11 1809 Scenario - War of the Fifth Coalition Mar/Apr end of 1809 (or sooner) (basic set, or with expansions) BACKGROUND France ended 1807 with long treaties with Prussia and Russia and Britain standing alone against it. Napoleon sought to enforce his Continental System (trade embargo against Britain) across all of Europe and so off he went to little Portugal in mid By late 1808, he was mired knee-deep in Spain and his treaty with Austria was about to come to an end. So it was time to pay attention to Austria, which had completed Army Reform and had the hawks back in power. But Russia was now an ally of France, not Austria, and Prussia was no threat at all. Plus he had a long border with Austria, which had the advantage of interior lines: Poland and Saxony on the north, Bavaria to the West, and Italy in the South. Where would Austria strike? INITIAL CONDITIONS Belligerents (names in parentheses are for expanded map version): Britain, (Spain, Portugal) and Austria against France, which also controls the client states of Wurttemberg, Westphalia, Bavaria, Saxony, Poland, Denmark, Naples (off map), Free Cities (Bremen and Hamburg), and a reluctant Russian ally. (Some nations are off-map unless playing with expansions. For use with expansions, see note at end of scenario.) Prussia is neutral and cannot enter the war due to treaty obligations. French units have Prussia's permission to move through Prussian territories, but may not stack with Prussians at the end of movement. The two sides start the scenario already at war. VICTORY CONDITIONS The scenario ends when Austria or France sues for peace, or the end of 1809, whichever comes first. 12 2. 40% of French Production is reserved for Spain (17 of the 43 total). This leaves the player with 25 per Strategic Turn to be used in this scenario. Ignore this rule if playing with the expansion maps - the French player can assign assets as he pleases. France or its client states control all light-green colored territories in Tyrol, Voralberg, Italy, Istria, and Dalmatia. France or its client states also control all buff German areas as its client state Confederation of the Rhine, and all gray (formerly Prussian) territories West of the Elbe River. France controls Danzig and Magdeburg, formerly controlled by Prussia. French units may move through Prussian territories as they please, as well as the client states of Wurttemberg, Bavaria, Saxony, Poland, Westphalia (and Naples). 3. Expanded Version This scenario may be expanded to include the maps and counters from the Peninsular War expansion and may include the Scandinavia and Southern Italy expansion maps. Russia's map may be included. When playing the expanded version, make the following additions/changes: 1. Start the Peninsular War scenario. Both Britain and France may assign its assets there or to the Austrian or other fronts as they please. Spanish and Portuguese units must stay on the Peninsular map, however. For a more historical limitation, keep the assignments as they are listed in the Peninsular War Scenario. 2. Place Stuart (a British leader) in Messina with 2 British infantry, 1 Neapolitan (Sicilian) Inf 13

14 and a 0-2 supply unit. Note there are also intrinsic defenses there (see Production Rules). 3. Place 3 French Inf factors within the Kingdom of Naples, and 3 factors of Neapolitan Inf under French command in Naples itself. No leaders are assigned, but may be sent. 4. Finland is a client state controlled by Russia. 5. Sweden is allied with Britain and at war with France, however its army may not leave Sweden (but note that Swedish Pomerania is part of Sweden) and its navy may not leave the Baltic. Production from Stockholm must be spent in Sweden or on behalf of Swedish forces. 14

15 Scenario Spain and Austria Sep/Oct 1807 end of Nov-Dec 1810 (requires basic set plus Peninsular War set; optional: add Southern Italy and Scandinavia maps) Napoleon must deal with the "Spanish ulcer" and a resurgent Austria at once. Scenario begins just after Napoleon s victory over Prussia and Russia. Scenario starts on Operational Turn 5 of Sep/Oct 1807 and ends at the end of Optional Rules. Players may play without naval units. If they do, assume every sea box has 3 British naval factors in it at all times. INITIAL CONDITIONS Belligerents: Britain, France. The two sides start the scenario already at war. France has limited control over Russia and Britain has limited control over Austria. Prussia is neutral in this scenario. Its units are not placed on the map and its production is not done. France France controls an allied Russia, but with limits. Russian production is controlled by France, but France must pay for Russian Army Reform no later than July/August 1808 and so must save production points needed to do that. France may have Russia declare war on Sweden (and thus Britain) at any time. Russian units may leave Russia to enter Finland and Sweden but nowhere else, except for the Expeditionary Corps. However, if enemy units enter Russia, the limitations on Russian unit movement is removed. The Russian navy may not leave the sea zones east of Denmark. Russia will provide an Expeditionary Force to France when requested: Golitzin, 5 Infantry, 0-2 supply. These units are controlled by France and function as French units. See the Expeditionary Forces rules. Russian units may not be disbanded, but may be demobilized or mobilized. France controls the client states of Wurttemberg, Westphalia, Bavaria, Saxony, Poland, Naples, Free Cities of Bremen and Hamburg, Oldenburg, Veneto, Istria, Dalmatia and Tyrol (part of Bavaria), Tuscany, Papal State France or its client states also control all buff German areas as its client state the Confederation of the Rhine, and all gray (formerly Prussian) territories West of the Elbe River. France controls Danzig and Magdeburg, formerly controlled by Prussia. France controls the minor ally of Spain. The Spanish Escalation rule applies. Britain Britain controls the client state of Sicily and the territories of Gibraltar and Malta. (Nations listed within parentheses are off-map unless playing with expansion maps.) Sweden is allied with Britain. British leaders may not stack with Swedish units except at sea. See Sweden in Diplomacy rules. Sweden may sue for peace without affecting Britain. Austria is controlled by the British player. Austria is neutral and cannot declare war on France (or France on Austria) until April 1809, when the treaty between the two nations ends. Salzburg is part of Austria in this scenario, but Veneto, Tyrol, Istria and Dalmatia are no longer part of Austria (now controlled by France).
