9 SECTION I. GENERAL INFORMATION 1-1. SCOPE a. b. CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Type of Manual. This manual will show you how to use the M291 Skin Decon Kit to decontaminate exposed skin, Model Number and Equipment Name. The official nomenclature is Decontaminating Kit, Skin: M291. The NSN is which identifies a box containing 20 kits. c. Purpose of Equipment. The M291 Skin Decon Kit allows you to completely decontaminate your skin through physical removal, absorption, and neutralization of toxic agent with no long-term harmful effects. M291 Skin Decon Kit NOTE: This kit should be used both for actual combat and for training purposes. 1-1
10 1-2. MAINTENANCE FORMS AND RECORDS. No maintenance forms or records are required for use of the M291 Skin Decon Kit REPORTING EQUIPMENT IMPROVEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS (EIRS), If your M291 Skin Decon Kit needs improvement, let us know. Send us and EIR, You, the user, are the only one who can tell us what you don t like about your equipment. Let us know why you don t like the design or performance. Put it on an SF 368 (Quality Deficiency Report). Mail it to us at Commander, US Army anent, Munitions and Chemical Command, ATTN: AMSMC-QAD(R), Rock Island, IL NOTE: Air Force personnel will submit SF 368 according to T.O,00-35D-54. Navy personnel submit SF 368 according to NAVSUPP-485. Marine Corps will submit ElR s in accordance with MCO , REPORTING ADVERSE REACTIONS, If you experience any adverse reactions to the use of the M291 Skin Decon Kit it should be reported immediately. An adverse reaction should be reported on an SF 380 (Reporting and Processing Medical Materiel Complaint/ Quality Improvement Reports) and mailed to Defense Personnel Support Center, DPSCRQ, 2800 S. 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA NOMENCLATURE CROSS-REFERENCE LIST. The common name for the Decontaminating Kit, Skin: M291 is Skin Decon Kit. 1-2
11 1-5. CORROSION DATA FEEDB ACK. Corrosion Prevention and Control (CPC) of Army materiel is a continuing concern. It is important that any corrosion problems with this item be reported so that the problem can be corrected and improvements can be made to prevent the problem in future items. NOTE: Use of key words such as corrosion, rust, deterioration, or cracking will assure that the information is identified as a CPC problem. a. Definition. While corrosion is typically associated with rusting of metals, it can also include deterioration of other materials such as rubber and plastic. Unusual cracking, softening, swelling, or breaking of these materials may be a corrosion problem. b. Reporting. Such problems should be reported using SF 368 (Quality Deficiency Report). Send the form to: Commander, US Army Armament, Munitions and Chemical Command, ATTN: AMSMC-QAD(R), Rock Island, IL NOTE: Air Force personnel submit SF 368 according to T.O D-54. Navy personnel submit SF 368 according to NAVSUP P-485 with copy to Naval Ship Systems Engineerng Station Code 045C, Philadelphia Naval Base, Philadelphia, PA
12 SECTION Il. EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION 1-6. EQUIPMENT CHARACTERISTICS, CAPABILITIES AND FEATURES. a. Contents t Each Skin Decon Kit consists of a wallet-like carrying pouch containing 6 individual decon packets, enough to do 3 complete skin decontamination. Each packet contains an applicator pad filled with decon powder. b. ACCOUntability. Skin Decon Kit is expendable. Discard carrying pouch after packets are all used c. Storage. Skin Decon Kit can be stored over a wide range of temperatures from severe cold to hot: -60 F (-51 0 C) to 160 o F (71 o C) EQUIPMENT DATA. a. Overall Dimensions: Height Width Thickness Unfolded Kit Folded Kit 4.4 in (11.2 cm) 9.3 in (23.6 cm) 0.7 in (1.8 cm) 4.4 in (11.2 cm) 4.7 in (11.9 cm) 1.4 in (3.6 cm) 1-4 b. 13 SECTION I. EQUIPMENT INSPECTION CHAPTER 2 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 2-1. GENERAL. You, the operator, must be sure your Skin Decon Kit is ready for use both before your mission and after. The following inspection must be performed to make sure you can accomplish your mission PROCEDURE: a inspect kit for loose black powder. If no powder is detected, kit is mission ready. b. If powder is detected, inspect each packet for leaks. c. Discard all leaking packets. d. Reinsert good packets into carrying pouch with TEAR LINE at bottom. NOTE: If there are fewer than 4 skin decon packets in your kit, request an additional kit. Continue to use your kit until all packets are gone. 2-1
14 SECTION II. OPERATION UNDER USUAL CONDITIONS WARNING For external use only. May be slightly irritating to skin or eyes. Keep decontaminating powder out of eyes, cuts and wounds. Use water to wash toxic agent out of eyes, cuts or wounds. The complete decontamination of the face and other areas of exposed skin must be done as quickly as possible, 3 minutes or less OPERATING PROCEDURE. When you find or suspect agent on your skin or a buddy sees it and tells you, act immediately. a. Put on your mask and hood. Do not zip the hood. Do not pull the draw strings. Do not fasten the shoulder straps. b. Seek overhead cover or use a poncho for protection against further contamination. 2-2
15 2-3. OPERATING I PROCEDURE- Continued. c. Remove one skin decon packet from carrying pouch. NOTE: Although any notch may be used to open packet, opening at TEAR LINE will place applicator pad in a position that is easier to use. d. Tear open quickly at notch. e. Remove applicator pad from packet and discard empty packet. 2-3
16 2-3. OPERATING PROCEDURE - Continued. f. Unfold applicator pad and slip finger(s) into handle. NOTE: For the following decontamination procedures, use entire surface of applicator pad. 2-4 h. Thoroughly scrub exposed skin or back of hand, palm, and fingers until completely covered with black powder from the applicator pad. Switch applicator pad to other hand and repeat procedure, step g, above. NOTE: Do not discard applicator pad at this time.
17 2-3. OPERATING PROCEDU RE - Continued. NOTE: If, when you were contaminated, you were masked with the hood zipped and drawstring pulled tight, stop. Discard the applicator pad, put on your protective gloves and go to paragraphs (p. 2-14). If, however, you were masked, but the zipper and drawstring were not secure, go to paragraph n (p. 2-13). The stars in the drawing show areas of the face that should be scrubbed with an extra stroke because they are hard to decontaminate. NOTE: Procedure is the same regardless of protective mask type. In case of use with Navy Chemical Protective Overgarment, which has hood attached to protective jacket, ignore mention of hood. 2-5

OPERATING PROCEDURF - Continued WARNING Death or injury may result if you breathe toxic agent while doing step i If you need to breathe before you finish, reseal your mask, clear it and check it, get your breath then resume decontaminating i. Thoroughly scrub exposed skin of face until completely covered with black powder from the applicator pad. (1) Hold breath, close eyes, grasp mask beneath chin and pull hood and mask away from chin enough to allow one hand between the mask and your face. Hold mask in this position during steps (2) through (6). 2-6
19 2-3. OPERATING PROCEDURE - continued. (2) Scrub up and down across face beginning - - at front of one ear to nose to other ear. (a) Scrub across face to corner of nose. (b) Scrub extra stroke at corner of nose. (c) Scrub across nose and tip of nose to other corner of nose. (d) Scrub extra stroke at corner of nose. (e) Scrub across face to other ear. 2-7

Scrub across closed mouth to other corner of mouth. Scrub extra stroke at corner of mouth. Scrub across cheek to end of jawbone. 2-8
21 2-3. OPERATING PROCEDURE - Continued. (4) Scrub up and down across face beginning where step (3) ended, to chin and to other end of jawbone. (a) Scrub across and under jaw to chin, cupping chin. (b) Scrub extra stroke at center of chin. (c) Scrub across and under jaw to end of jawbone. 2-9
22 2-3. OPERATING PROCEDURE - Continued. (5) Turn your hand out, and quickly wipe the inside of mask that touches your face. (6) Discard applicator pad. (7) Immediately seal mask, clear it and check it. 2-10

Wthout breaking the seal between face and mask, o. thoroughly scrub skin of neck and ears until completely covered with black powder. Redo hands until completely covered with black powder. 2-13
26 2-3. OPERATING PROCEDURE - Continued. p. Discard applicator pad. q. Put on your protective gloves. r. Fasten hood. NOTE: It does not matter how long the powder stays on your skin. s. Remove powder with soap and water when operational conditions permit. 2-14
