MARQUETTE NROTC ALUMNI NEWSLETTER Spring 2015 Commanding Officer Captain Dan Olson Hello once again from Marquette NROTC. Old Man Winter has finally packed his bags we re all smelling the sweet nectar of spring in the air. With the warming weather and blooming of flowers, another academic year draws to a close. As I look back on the various events, I remain humbled to be part of this program as I witness the performance and accomplishments of each Midshipman and the unit as a whole! The Fall Ball held in late October marked the first major event for the unit and my first opportunity to see the enthusiasm and professionalism the Midshipmen put into preparing for, and carrying out such a formal event. Our guest of Honor was Vice Admiral Beaman, a 1974 Marquette NROTC alumnus, was tremendously impressed with the future Ensigns and Second Lieutenants in his alma mater! Due to a scheduling conflict, this year s drill competition had a bit more expeditionary quality to it. Rather than travel down I-94 to Madison, the Midshipmen competed at the University of South Carolina drill meet where we walked away with three awards 1st place in the platoon inspection, and a 1st and 3rd place in the endurance challenge. Not only were we able to show off the professionalism that is Marquette NROTC, but the event was a great teambuilding event and incredibly fun for everyone! Spring term brought us the three annual leadership conferences at the Naval and Air Force Academies, and Notre Dame. Our attendees provided a presentation to the unit upon their return and it was apparent in the energy and enthusiasm that it was a formative experience for all of them. Thanks once again to the generous financial support by the Sea Power Library, the charitable arm of the Marquette NROTC Alumni and Friends Association. Their robust financial support of the drill competition and leadership conferences enabled us to provide these enriching experiences. For those alumni actively involved with the association, I want to thank you for your continued support of our Midshipmen. For those who aren t involved or whose involvement has faded over time, I d ask you to 1 reflect on how Marquette NROTC influenced your life and consider helping influence the lives of some great young men and women by becoming involved! With the year drawing to a close, I owe a heartfelt thank you to several people who are instrumental in our mission. To Joe Foti and Arthur Moses, thank you for everything you do to keep the unit running. You two are the men behind the curtains making sure that Midshipmen get the support they need so they can focus on their education and professional development. Whether it be outfitting them in more winter-friendly uniforms or ensuring our seniors are medically cleared for commissioning, you do it with a caring smile. To Staff Sergeant Cano, I ve watched as the Midshipmen gravitated towards your leadership and trusted counsel. The epitome of tough love and unyielding standards, the Midshipmen universally look up to you and strive to match your level of effort. From planning every significant event in the unit, to discretely resolving sensitive personal issues brought to you by anxious Midshipmen, you have done to perfection and in typical Marine Corps fashion. Over 200 people were in attendance including midshipmen and their friends and family. After an hour of socializing, the evening kicked off with a short ceremony and a special presentation from the NROTC choir, followed by opening remarks from commanding officer, Captain Olson and an inspirational speech from the guest of honor, Master Chief Michael Carbone. The festivities continued after dinner, with a farewell presentation dedicated to the 1st Class Midshipmen honoring their accomplishments while also bringing up some of their most memorable moments for some light hearted fun. Following the senior farewell, the floor was opened up for dancing, which continued well into the night. It was a spectacular night to celebrate the 1st Class Midshipmen, and mark the closing of another successful year of NROTC at Marquette.

Spring Leadership BNCO: MIDN 1/C Brumley &BNXO: MIDN 1/C Hastings Spring semester started out with a sense of excitement. The fourth class midshipmen integrated beautifully into the battalion and made great strides after a fall semester full of learning and adjusting to the MUN- ROTC life. Everyone returned from winter break looking forward to a busy semester of volunteering, ceremonies, and making new memories. My goal was to create an environment where leadership experiences were available to everyone, regardless of their current billet. I wanted each midshipman to continue developing and understanding his or her own personal leadership style. By increasing the amount of selfreflection and support for the personal growth of each midshipman, I hoped that this semester would be one they could look back on and feel like they really grew into the kind of leader they wanted to become. Like it usually does, time that I thought would go slowly sped by and now each class is one semester closer to commissioning. One of the most important things I learned about great leaders is that in the midst of their busy lives, they make time for their people. Difficult times will pass, and they often pass much easier when everyone cares about each other. Struggles are lighter when carried on the shoulders of a class of midshipmen versus only one. I am unsure if every midshipman grew individually the way I pictured they would at the beginning of the semester; however, I am sure of one thing. Every midshipman in the battalion cares more about their fellow classmates than themselves, and their simple care for each other has made me realize they are all already great leaders with bright futures. They have taught me more about leadership in one semester than I have learned in the last seven. I am lucky to have lead such an amazing group of future United States Navy and United States Marine Corps officers. Being the BNXO of the Marquette NROTC battalion has been a challenging and rewarding experience. It has been challenging in trying to come up with innovative ideas to keep all the MIDN engaged and learn about the Navy and themselves during prescribed ROTC activities. Nevertheless, I believe that the staff have accomplished that goal this semester. One of the lessons I learned early in the semester is that having an effective and organized way of collecting the information passed up by subordinates is critical in making good decisions. It has also been rewarding for me to watch all of the underclass MIDN progress through the ROTC program and grow as leaders. It is hard not to think of my own experiences going through the program and how close my classmates and I are from graduating and commissioning as Ensigns and Second Lieutenants. However, there is a lot of work still to be done and the battalion and myself will continue to work hard and stay motivated till we cross the finish line in each perspective class.

Naval Leadership Weekend at Notre Dame By: MIDN 3/C Black & MIDN 3/C Herrmann From February 26th 28th midshipmen Black, Herrmann, Thompson, and Wolfram, attended the University of Notre Dame s 20th Annual Naval Leadership Weekend along with over 150 other midshipmen from across the country. The weekend consisted of several inspiring talks from many of the distinguished leaders of the Navy and Marine Corps. While not listening to talks during the day, midshipmen were split into small discussion groups for ethical decision games and discussion on current issues facing today s Navy, with staff members and midshipmen from different universities across the country. During the evenings, midshipmen were given a break and chance to explore about and around Notre Dame s giant, beautiful, and freezing campus. The weekend started on Thursday night with icebreakers, where midshipmen showed of their future nuclear power engineering skills with an egg drop competition. Friday morning began early. Midshipmen Thompson had the opportunity to have breakfast with Sergeant Major Sowers, a distinguished NCO in the Marine Corps, who then started the guest speaker portion of the weekend. He was followed by Vice Admiral Tighe, Commander of U.S. 10th Fleet, and Professor Holt from Notre Dame s college of business. Friday s talks ended with an inspiring presentation by Admiral Gortney, head of U.S. Northern Command. A main theme of speakers on Friday was to know yourself and your values, and be able to know you re decisions ahead of time and have the courage to stick to them. Their thoughtful words replayed throughout the day as midshipmen broke into groups to play ethical decision games. Saturday was another early morning which began with a talk by Rear Admiral Stearney, head of Navy Warfare Development Command, followed by Admiral Rodgers, Commander of U.S. Cyber Command. They two talked about the technological future of the Navy, and some of the challenges in this new century of technology and the growing trend of cyber warfare, but ended with the thought that technology is only a means to an end, and while our technology is superb, it s people that are behind every victory. The Conference ended with a dinner, where Vice Chief of Naval operations, Admiral Michelle Howard, delivered the Keynote address. She offered powerful words on courage, and the importance and value of diversity in any organization, and shared with midshipmen and staff her variety of experiences including her involvement in the 2009 Captain Phillips rescue. The Conference was a tremendous opportunity for midshipmen to meet and ask question to several of the highest ranking and most experienced outstanding individuals in the Navy, as well as connect with other midshipmen from across the country. The weekend was a fun and valuable one, all involved said that they would love to attend again if they could, and recommend to any midshipmen.

Clint Bruce The reward for excellence is no punishment, we want to be elite. Naval Academy Leadership Conference By: MIDN 2/C Holsbo & MIDN 2/C Dwyer Leading in an Interconnected World The United States Naval Academy s annual Leadership Conference was held JAN 15. This conference has been held annually since The theme of the 2015 conference was Leading in an Interconnected World. This year the Sea Power Library Association was gracious enough to fund the travel arrangements for two MIDN form Marquette to attend the conference. The two of us who went thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Many speakers, from all types of career fields, attended the conference. A few of the highlighted speakers include: -General Stanley McChrystal, USA (Ret.) -Pat Finn - Senior Vice President of Cisco's US Public Sector Organization -Mike Spanos - President and Chief Executive Officer, Greater China Region, PepsiCo, Inc. -Clint Bruce - Former Navy SEAL, NFL Football Player for the Baltimore Ravens and New Orleans Saints, Founder and President of Trident Response Group -Richard Karlgaard - American journalist, bestselling author, and publisher of Forbes magazine We would like to sincerely thank all of the good folks in the Sea Power Library Association who made this unforgettable trip possible. It was an outstanding leadership experience, with which we are now able to further enrich the MU NROTC Unit. Air Force Academy Leadership Conference By: MIDN 2/C Dela Sancha General Stanley McChrystal, USA (Ret.) Power can be lost but not taken away. Only you can surrender it If you re worrying about your next promotion, you re dead On the week of February 25, MIDN Thomsen and I had the opportunity to attend the Air Force Leadership conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Overall, it was a great learning experience. The conference was very thoughtfully organized. All participants had a mentor who provided them with guidance and support. At the conference, we were able to meet great speakers who talked about what it takes to be a good leader, struggles we will have as future officers, and morals an officer should live up to. Although all the speakers were highly motivating, there was one that stood out to me the most, Admiral Michelle Howard. Michelle Howard is the first women and African American to hold the position of Vice Chief of Naval Operations. When I heard she was one of the speakers, I was excited to hear what advice a successful woman like her would have. Admiral Michelle Howard is not just a smart powerful woman; through her speech, she demonstrated her humble and caring personality. She was about 5 3 but can catch a whole audience s attention within seconds. Admiral Michelle talked about two main things character and diversity. To her, a person s character will determine a person s capabilities to become a good officer. She mentions that, for example, courage is not about doing something that is considered courageous because someone is looking, but doing it because that is what you truly believe in. Her second point was diversity. When she mentioned diversity I immediately thought about having a more racially diverse navy, but this wasn t what she was talking about. To Admiral Howard, having diversity was important, which meant considering the advice of you junior enlisted as much as your senior enlisted or officers. Admiral Howard is definitely an inspirational woman. We also had the chance to attend team building and question/answer seminars. We got to share our ideas and concerns with midshipman, cadets and experienced military personnel. One thing we really liked about this part was that we were able to talk to and share morals with students in other units and branches. It is also essential that we learn the perspectives of others that will enable us to work well with other branches in the U.S. military. We believe that a conference like this, where we had speakers from multiple branches, demonstrates the strength of our military as a whole. Overall, this was a great learning experience. We feel extremely lucky to have been given this chance. The Sea Power Association funds midshipman at the MU NROTC unit to attend conferences like this yearly. We dearly thank the Sea Power Associations for the financial and moral support!

Notre Dame Basketball Tournament By MIDN 4/C Gallaher & MIDN 4/C Bobek After many weeks of Saturday practices and Marquette University intramural games, the Marquette Naval ROTC sent a male and female team to the Annual Flyin Irish Basketball Invitational, which took place from February 27th to March 1st. The tournament was hosted by Notre Dame s Air Force ROTC, and included ROTC basketball teams from all three branches of service from colleges throughout the nation. The women s team notched their first victory in two years against the Olivet Nazarene University Roaring Tigers in overtime. Led by 1/C Margaret Brumley and 2/C Kristina Tatsanaram, the Lady Warriors advanced to the tournament semifinals, notching victories against the University of Indiana and Michigan State along the way. In the semi-finals, held on the main floor of the Edmund P. Joyce Center, the Lady Warriors faced the host of the tournament The Fighting Irish. In a back and forth first half, the Lady Warriors trailed by 4 points entering the second half. Despite a valiant effort from their leaders, the Lady Warriors fell behind and ended up losing the game. On the men s side of the tournament, the Golden Eagles were unable to advance past pool play. The men were defeated by Purdue University, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Notre Dame Naval ROTC. The men had a tough draw, but team leaders 1/C Jameson Arnold and 2/C Joe Lovejoy inspired the team to near second half comebacks against both Purdue and Notre Dame. All in all the ladies and gentlemen enjoyed a fun packed weekend full of laughs and great teamwork! Another Story Headline Navy Nurse Corps Club By: MIDN 1/C Uebelhor The Marquette University Navy Nurse Corps Club (NNCC) has continued to be an integral part of the battalion during PT sessions and Bulldog. This semester, we were also able to get 15 midshipman CPR certified in order to increase the level of safety at PT. In the beginning of the semester, NNCC completed our third first aid training day for the midshipman. In building upon the skills taught in the previous first aid sessions, the midshipmen were challenged to think critically during this simulation. Each nursing student had one station where they could teach specific skills to midshipmen. These stations included treating burns, taking vital signs, treating a traumatic brain injury, and caring for a patient with a sucking chest wound. Once the midshipmen had visited all the stations, the battalion formed together for a battlefield triage scenario. During this simulation, the midshipmen were given a scenario in which they needed to treat wounded enemies and allies. The midshipmen were asked to think ethically about which patients they should treat first. Once they had decided who they should treat, they cared for the patient s wounds as they had previously been taught. This proved to be a challenging and informative teaching opportunity for all involved. As the semester comes to a close, the NNCC is focused on preparing our two freshman nurse options for their duties next year. The four senior nurse options will be graduation in May and are looking forward to their first duty hospital.

Semper Fi Society By: MIDN 1/C Camut Each Wednesday, Marine Options and particularly motivated Navy Options meet for Semper Fi Society. During this time, the upperclassmen instruct all participants on various topics related to Officer Candidates School. This year we have covered everything from land navigation, combat formations, and UCMJ. We also had the opportunity to further our knowledge through two books studies. All members read a select book from the Commandant s Professional Reading List and then gave a short presentation on what they learned from the book. It proved to be a very valuable experience that expanded the knowledge of the whole group. At the end of the semester, all of the classroom learning will culminate with a final practical application in SULE (Small Unit Leadership Exercise). The 2/C Marine Options will be tasked with leading a squad through various scenarios in which they will have to apply the knowledge they have accumulated this year. In preparation for OCS this summer, the 2/C Marine Options have been participating in the unit Bulldog program. They have trained each week for the rigors of the six week course in Quantico, VA and have finally made it to the last few sessions. They were given the opportunity to attend University of Michigan s Bulldog Prep weekend which closely simulates the training of OCS. All of the 2/C excelled in the training evolutions which consisted of SULE, land navigation, PFT/CFT, and written exams. They now feel fully prepared for this summer and are excited for the last few training sessions which includes a six and nine mile hike. Wardroom Society By: MIDN 3/C Peters This semester and previous, I have had the opportunity to organize the unit s Wardroom Society with Midshipman 2/C Jacob Crnkovich. We have been trying some new things as well as sticking to a few old ideas. So far this semester, the Wardroom Society has participated in Marquette s monthly trivia nights, played jeopardy games, reviewed naval history, and practiced visual recognition of various platforms, weapons, and places of the US Navy. The Midshipmen have also discussed various case studies, including ones like the USS Vincennes incident, in order to build the mental and moral character they will draw on as college students and future Naval Officers. And over three weeks, the Wardroom also watched the absolute classic, The Caine Mutiny and discussed its implications in leadership and management. stories and ideas regarding the Naval Service, and something I will hold on to when I remember the club in the future. In keeping with Wardroom Society s tradition, we visited a Milwaukee burger restaurant to relax and reflect before the school year concluded. The Wardroom Society has taken an appreciation for each individual s diversity in background, academic and professional interests, and motivation for service. It is a privilege to hear the Midshipmen of Wardroom Society share their

Awards Day By: MIDN 1/C McDonald On the 28th of March, the Marquette Naval ROTC Battalion attended the Joint ROTC Awards Ceremony at the Varsity Theater on campus. After a year of hard work, Midshipmen and cadets were being recognized for their accomplishments in academics, leadership and all around performance. The three ROTC units were lucky to be joined by the Commander of Naval Services Training Command, Rear Admiral Richard Brown. Admiral Brown spoke to the midshipmen and cadets about the future of the armed forces and emphasized how vital a strong working relationship between all of the services is on the 21st century battlefield. After the ceremony the First Class midshipmen, their families, and the Unit Staff enjoyed lunch with Admiral Brown back at the ROTC unit in the Old Gym. Following lunch, Admiral Brown shared his career experiences and imparted some final points of advice upon the soon to be commissioned men and women. Pictured below: MIDN 4/C Luke receiving his award and scholarship from the Flemming family and the Tri-ROTC Color Guard marching on the colors following the arrival of the official party. Mess Night By: MIDN 1/C Arnold On April 17th, the Marquette NROTC 1/C had their first experience with a traditional Mess Night. We were honored to have been hosted by Mr. Mark Neuwirth and Mr. Dick Leinenkugel, both Marquette NROTC graduates. The evening began with a VIP tour of the MillerCoors facilities, ending at the entrance to the famous Miller cave where the night s event would begin. After drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and the parading of the beef, the floor was opened to fines. The fining portion of the evening was quite memorable with many laughs shared, and drinks from the grog passed out. However, the big hit of the night was that the Mess was privileged to have had a specific MillerCoors beer chosen to pair with each course. Mr. Leinenkugel also passed along some tips and tricks for truly appreciating what makes beer so special and unique. After the formalities of Mess Night, the Mess then proceeded over to Caffrey s Pub for some more drinks. The entire night was unforgettable and it will be sure to remain a highlight for the 1/C when looking back on their time at Marquette. Thank you again to Mr. Mark Neuwirth and Mr. Dick Leinenkugel for their support and making that special evening possible.

Marquette Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Commissioning Class 2015 On the 16 May 2015, 19 midshipmen joined the wardroom and were commissioned as Ensigns in the United States Navy and three midshipmen were commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the United States Marine Corp. The ceremony was conducted outside Joan of Arc Chapel under a gloomy spring sky, but this did not deter the soon to be officers as they climbed the steps and took the oath in the same confident manner as the generations of Naval and Marine Corp Officers before them. Each midshipmen raised their right hand and proudly pledged their service to protect the United States Constitution and the people she represents. Friends and family were in attendance standing by their newly minted officers. The Ensigns and Second Lieutenants then joined their Army and Air force counterparts at the Varsity Theater. Major General Luis Visot of the United States Army, as guest of honor, gave an inspiring speech for both the new officers and families in attendance. Shedding the microphone, Major General Visot filled the theater with his voice. He congratulated the elated parents and challenged the new officers in attendance to dedicate themselves to a life of selfless service to their country. He reminded those on stage that they bore the uniform of the United States, symbolizing America s confidence that they would accomplish great deeds in the years to come.

See my Facebook posting with a photo of the current sign. I think you ll agree with me that this is a worthwhile, visible project. We all know that first impressions are important, and our NROTC unit wants to project a professional image to visitors. Who s with me to raise funds to buy our NROTC unit a new even better sign? I ll put in the first $50, in addition to my usual annual SLA donation and dues. Send your separate tax deductible donation check noting NROTC Unit 75 th Challenge in the memo line. Our goal is to unveil the new sign NLT the 30 October Fall Ball. Will you join me to tangibly commemorate our 75 th anniversary and help the unit? Your A&FA had another solid year of service.
