Program Overview The ASVAB Career Exploration Program provides high quality, career exploration and planning materials at no cost to high schools across the country. The program encourages students to explore a wide variety of careers, rather than limiting their exploration by telling them what they can or should do.
Program Description The ASVAB Career Exploration Program is a tool for: Students Provides students with opportunities to choose a career path with various choices Parents Provides parents an options to start conversation about career choices with data to support guidance Guidance counselors Contributes and assists counselors with focusing student on career path which matches talents with ability Educators Provides an opportunity to freely experience standardized testing without becoming a part of the permanent record
Transition to PARCC While transitioning from New Jerseys previous graduation exam- the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) and the Alternative High School Assessment (AHSA) which is currently being replaced by the new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exams, NJDOE is allowing high school students from classes 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 satisfy their graduation requirement with other exams or by completing NJDOE portfolio as an appeal to satisfy their requirement to graduate, if they don t receive a passing score on the (PARCC) exam. (ACT) Students absorbs all cost; only offered 6 times a school year at $50.00 per test (Accuplacer) No cost to students, the NJDOE absorbs all cost; can only take once per school year (PSAT) Free to all 10 th and 11 graders; only offered once a school year (SAT) Student absorbs all cost; offered 7 times per year at $60.00 per test (ASVAB) Totally Free; Take whenever school schedules NJDOE Portfolio Appeal NJDOE absorbs all cost for all student s; Time consuming
Market Summary The PARCC have greatly increased ASVAB testing in New Jersey while school districts transition from the HSPA to the PARCC. Between school years 2014/15 to 2015/16 we experienced a 42.85% increase state wide. Although, school districts have 5 other options to use, most use the ASVAB because scores are returned within 14 days and there is no cost to the students or schools. Market: past, present, & future New Jersey has increased ASVAB testing Number of students testing: SY14-15: 10,417 SY15-16: 21,328 Number of schools testing: SY14-15: 123 SY15-16: 195

Importance of Career Exploration Students make decisions about college or careers: The ASVAB Program gives students the opportunity to explore a variety of careers using knowledge they have gained about their interests and skills through assessment components and structured activities.
ASVAB Program and the Military Civilian Education Services Specialists administer ASVAB Program Schools determine whether or not student information is released to the military Recruiters serve as test proctors only; they are prohibited from recruiting actions during test administration & interpretations Program is provided to schools, even if results are not released to military recruiters Participants have no obligation to speak to a recruiter or pursue a military career 46% of participants intend on pursuing a 4-year college; 17% have an interest in military careers For students interested in the military, ASVAB scores can be used for all services including US Coast Guard
What are the Main Components?
The Main Components Multiple-Aptitude test ASVAB Interest Inventory Find Your Interest (FYI) Explore Careers using OCCU-Find
Multiple-Aptitude Test ASVAB Test Assessment of student s ability to learn new skills Predictor of success in training and education programs The ASVAB tests in eight different areas. General Science Knowledge of life science, earth and space science, and physical science Word Knowledge Ability to understand the meaning of words through synonyms Mathematics Knowledge Knowledge of mathematical concepts and applications Auto and Shop Information Knowledge of automotive maintenance and repair, and wood and metal shop practices Arithmetic Reasoning Ability to solve basic arithmetic word problems Paragraph Comprehension Ability to obtain information from written material Electronics Information Knowledge of electrical current, circuits, devices, and electronic systems Mechanical Comprehension Knowledge of the principles of mechanical devices, structural support, and properties of materials
The ASVAB test is not just for military entrance but is an opportunity for students to broaden their horizons to determine what they want to pursue as a career. ASVAB is a 3-hour, multiple choice, paper & pencil test ASVAB can only be administered to students in grades10 thru12 Test can only be scheduled by high school educators Retesting: Students can test as often as the school offers; however, the last score will be their score of record If a student in the 11 th or 12 th grade tests, and they score high enough, their scores could be used for military entrance. If a student in 10 th grade tests, their scores cannot be used for military enlistment (age does not matter). Accommodations are available for students with IEPs; however, these test scores cannot be used for military entrance. The website is a resource for students which need additional help studying.
Interpreting Test Scores
