3 Message From The Chairman Global challenges on peace and security have multiplied in the past years, stretching far across national borders. This calls for a countervailing vision pointing the way for humanity to cooperate in creating a peaceful and prosperous world hence the significance of the vision of one family under God and its implications for the principles and values that define our humanity. In this critical situation it is important that faith communities work together to restore the basis of shared universal principles and a common vision of an ethical society. Global Peace Foundation has been promoting such cooperation through projects in Korea, Northern Ireland, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Uganda, and Kenya among other nations. All our programs offer models of how fundamental universal principles and moral values can be applied practically to have cultural, social, political and economic impact at both national and regional levels. Global Peace Foundation will advance this approach with added vigor through the number of initiatives that demonstrate its importance and impact at this critical point in history. We invite you to join with us in this common course and collaborative action for the betterment of the entire human family. Hyun Jin Preston Moon Founder & Chairman Global Peace Foundation 2

5 Message from the Executive Director This Annual Report 2014 briefly highlights some of the great milestones made by the Global Peace Foundation Kenya in advancing its mission in the Republic of Kenya. On behalf of the board of GPF Kenya, I would like to thank our Founding Chairman Dr. Hyun Jin Moon, the Global Peace Foundation International Office, GPF Kenya Board of Directors & staff members, and our esteemed partners for the continued support they have extended GPF Kenya since As the country and the rest of the world continues to grapple with various challenges rising from identity based conflicts and terrorism, its becoming more and more clear that GPF s vision that all Humanity is One Family under God provides the much needed ideological framework from which to craft a sustainable solution. In May 2014, GPF Kenya signed an MOU with the Common Market for East and South Africa (COMESA) to establish and manage a youth desk to facilitate programs that will promote the mitigation of the high youth unemployment rate in Africa. As a result of this 2 year MOU, GPF has been appointed the implementation partner for the COMESA Youth Programme which will facilitate implementation of youth programs in the COMESA region at a cost of USD 6,668,000. Some of the programs to be implemented under this MoU include the LEAP Hubs program of Global Peace Foundation that establishes incubator spaces in high schools to enable high school students to launch their own business or social enterprises. LEAP Hubs was launched in March 2014 by Her Excellency Mrs. Rachael Ruto in nine (9) high schools within Nairobi and Kiambu County and has since scaled up to 22 schools. The schools received computer donations and internet connectivity from the Chandaria Foundation, Global Peace Foundation and Airtel Kenya. As part of our youth empowerment initiatives, GPF Kenya was honored to host 27 of the 2014 Mandela Washington Fellows together with the US Ambassador to Kenya, Amb. Robert Godec for a luncheon round table to network, share and discuss their experiences with some of the most successful personalities both in the government and private sector. The year culminated with the UGEN Youth Summit that brought together over 300 young people from Kisumu County and other neighboring counties to promote socioeconomic empowerment for sustainable peace and development anchored on the youth. The summit saw the signing of an MOU between the County Government of Kisumu and the Youth Enterprise Development Fund to promote entrepreneurship and forge economic emancipation among the youth in Kisumu. Ladies and Gentlemen, a glance at our 2013 financial statement reveal a 46% increase in income as compared to the previous financial year. The report further shows a 22% reduction in administrative expenses and a 100% increase in money invested in program implementation. In line with our strategic goals for the year 2015, Global Peace Foundation Kenya will continue pursuing strategic partnerships with a view to achieving collective impact in our ongoing programmes. Some of the projects we are focusing on include Character and Creativity Initiative, Leap Hubs, GPLC East Africa, and the COMESA Youth Programme. Thank you and may God Bless you. Daniel Juma Omondi Executive Director Global Peace Foundation Kenya. 4

6 Executive Summary The 2014 annual report of Global Peace Foundation Kenya highlights the significant achievements of its programs and activities in advancing models of sustainable peace and development. The Global Peace Foundation Kenya has centered its priorities in the following areas: Transforming Education The Global Peace Education division collaborates with educators and changemakers to make education relevant to today s world by preparing students to succeed in the 21st century economy. Through the Character and Creativity Initiative (CCI), the program instills values and competencies that prepare the students for leadership roles to enhance ethical societies. The Leap Hubs program on the other hand nurtures the creativity of the students by incubating their business ideas for job creation. The program has modeled best practices that have improved schools culture, reduced instances of bullying and other indiscipline cases, promoted entrepreneurship skills development and introduced creative teaching methods. Community Development Over the years, GPF Kenya has developed models of community development in different urban settlements in Nairobi geared towards achieving empowered families and resilient communities. In 2014, GPF Kenya partnered with UN Habitat and the Grand Korea Leisure Co. in the implementation of an economic empowerment program in 2 primary schools in Nairobi and Kiambu County with the aim of empowering them to be self-reliant. The initiative dubbed Greenhouses for Schools supported the distribution of solar lights to needy students, construction of 2 greenhouses, disbursement of 2000 chicks, training of a locally constituted project management committee on poultry management and mentoring students on soccer and arts. This model has provided the two schools with a sustainable source of income to support their development as opposed to sole reliance on the limited government and donor funding. Youth Empowerment Sustainable development in Kenya requires equality of opportunity, youth empowerment and peaceful coexistence among the Kenyan people. The U-GEN (UNITED GENERATION) platform inspires the young generation to be moral and innovative leaders who work for sustainable peace and development by facilitating community reconciliation through dialogue and enhancing a culture of economic and social entrepreneurship. This helps to address a number of social and economic factors that influence youth propensity towards violence in Kenya. 5

The day presented an opportunity for them to get inspired about the ICT sector by getting a first - hand look into Tech institutions. The girls had a one on one session with young women in ICT from Safaricom Ltd, Cisco Inc., Copy Cat Ltd and other organizations. This served as a mentorship forum to motivate them to take up science subjects and consider careers in the engineering and ICT sector. The students were fascinated by a Tele Presence session with girls from Amsterdam, Portugal and Bedford where they got to interact and learn more about the level of ICT integration in their countries and different cultures across the world. Cisco partners have encouraged me to pursue my dream career of being an electrical engineer and I request them to attend our career days at school, Ndinda Mary, Our Lady of Fatima.
