2 Background Kerala Section is a very active Section, originally starting out as a sub-section of Bangalore Kerala Section has been noted for two special activities beyond the usual: Student activities Humanitarian Activities This presentation focuses on the latter 2/18
3 Kerala: The Location A thin strip of land on the lower southwest coast of India Tropical rainforest, biodiversity hotspot and home to many coveted spices Extensively connected through trade links, both pre-colonial and colonial Cosmopolitan outlook, 100% literacy and high demographic indicators 3/18
4 Humanitarian Activities in KS IEEE members in Kerala Section have interests come from diverse backgrounds One group also come from the Developmental / NGO / Humanitarian backgrounds Kerala Section was informally associated with several humanitarian projects in many domains 4/18

6 The 2004 Tsunami A disaster of unprecedented magnitude Impacted the whole of the Indian Ocean from South East Asia to South Asia to Africa Over 100,000 people killed and ten times that number displaced India among the most seriously impacted 6/18
7 Kerala Section's response Kerala Section volunteers stepped in for rescue/relief work after the first 2 days In the relief phase, Kerala section volunteers helped in communications, logistics, planning and co-ordination (no other IEEE Section was directly involved in any country) Cleon Anderson, the then IEEE President visited Kerala on Jan 2005, when the Section volunteers asked IEEE to have a stronger humanitarian program 7/18
8 Tsunami's Aftermath The contributions of three Kerala Section volunteers were lauded in IEEE's 2005 Annual Report The IEEE leadership became sensitized on the need to use and develop technology for humanitarian considerations This point was emphasized in IEEE's Public Visibility Initiative of /18
9 The new tagline The PVI recommended the change of IEEE tagline from Networking the World to Advancing Technology for Humanity. This was adopted in 2010 Thus, Kerala Section did have a small but significant role in this shift of direction 9/18
10 Programmes General orientation Specific programmes: InSight: Computing for the Differentlyabled Off-grid Power Supply Community Mapping Remote surveillance for natural disasters 10/18
11 General Orientation After the post-tsunami experience, Kerala Section has been actively taking up humanitarian projects The projects have been of several kinds: Student projects Individual volunteers' contributions Partnerships with NGOs 11/18
12 InSight: Computing for the Blind A Free and Open Source software stack for the visually impaired Permits the entire gamut of operations from OS installation on a brand-new machine to all regular operations Leadership provided by IEEE volunteers Now being rolled out throughout the state of Kerala 12/18
13 Off-grid Power for Village A Student Project of Kerala Section Brought solar power to an isolated settlement where grid power is unlikely to be ever available Technology delivered and usage stabilized. Currently in maintenance mode 13/18
14 Community Mapping A program for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Uses Google Mapping tools for contour mapping 40 villages in the disasterprone district of Nagai in Tamil Nadu Pilot phase completed. Larger-scale rollout over TN and Kerala now possible 14/18
15 Proposed programmes The Section has proposed two new humanitarian projects to IEEE The Projects are: A wearable token-based electronic life saver for man overboard situations for boat crew A system for field-level spot-issue of registration certificates small-scale fishing craft 15/18
16 Remote Surveillance 16/18 An airborne still and movie camera for remote surveillance of disaster-hit terrain Consists of airframe, GPS-assisted avionics and Arduino-based optoelectronics Supported by IEEE Foundation Three airframes developed. Completion expected in 3 months' time

18 In Conclusion... The diversity of IEEE membership had resulted in enhanced interest in the humanitarian dimension of IEEE The post-tsunami contributions of Kerala Section raised the need for a strong humanitarian program for IEEE Kerala section now executing (and planning to execute) several humanitarian technology projects 18/18
