3 Resources and Organizations related to Public Health Infrastructure U.S. Department of Health and Human Services The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the U.S. government s principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves. HHS is responsible for almost a quarter of all federal outlays and administers more grant dollars than all other federal agencies combined. HHS works with state and local health departments to ensure the health and safety of the U.S population. Centers for Disease Control Founded in 1946 in Atlanta, GA, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) employ more than 15,000 employees in nearly 170 different occupations and work with field staff in all 50 states and more than 50 countries. CDC works 24/7 to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. CDC increases the health security of our nation. As the nation s health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish this mission, CDC conducts critical science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise. American Public Health Association APHA champions the health of all people and all communities and strengthens the public health profession. The organization speaks out for public health issues and policies backed by science. APHA is the only organization that influences federal policy, has a 140 plus year perspective and brings together members from all fields of public health. APHA publishes the American Journal of Public Health and The Nation's Health newspaper. At the Annual Meeting & Exposition, thousands of people share the latest public health research. APHA leads public awareness campaigns such as Get Ready and National Public Health Week. APHA also has 53 state and regional affiliates which assist APHA in achieving its mission at the local level. MODULE 16: Public Health Infrastructure in the United States: An Integrated System 2

4 Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) is a collaborative of 20 national organizations focused on improving public health education and training, practice, and research. Established in 1992 to implement the recommendations of the Public Health Faculty/Agency Forum, the Council on Linkages works to further academic/practice collaboration to ensure a well trained, competent workforce and the development and use of a strong evidence base for public health practice. The Council on Linkages is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Staff support is provided by the Public Health Foundation. Public Health Accreditation Board The Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the continuous quality improvement of Tribal, state, local, and territorial public health departments. PHAB is working to promote and protect the health of the public by advancing the quality and performance of all public health departments in the United States through national public health department accreditation. PHAB s vision is a high performing governmental public health system that will make the United States a healthier nation. Association of State and Territorial Health Officials ASTHO is the national nonprofit organization representing public health agencies in the United States, the U.S. Territories, and the District of Columbia, and over 100,000 public health professionals these agencies employ. ASTHO members, the chief health officials of these jurisdictions, formulate and influence sound public health policy and ensure excellence in statebased public health practice. ASTHO's primary function is to track, evaluate, and advise members on the impact and formation of public or private health policy which may affect them and to provide them with guidance and technical assistance on improving the nation's health. National Association of State and Territorial Health Officials The history of NACCHO dates back to the 1960s, with the formation of the National Association of County Health Officials (NACHO), an independent affiliate of the National Association of Counties. As the federal, state, and local public health systems continued to expand, NACHO combined with the U.S. Conference of Local Health Officers, an organization affiliated with the United States Conference of Mayors, to form NACCHO in This unified organization more closely represents all governmental local health departments, including counties, cities, city/counties, districts, tribes, and townships. In 2001, NACCHO expanded its scope to include tribal public health MODULE 16: Public Health Infrastructure in the United States: An Integrated System 3

5 agencies serving tribal communities on reservation lands. Today, NACCHO represents 2,800 local health departments. National Association of Local Boards of Health The National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH) informs, guides, and is the national voice for boards of health. In today s public health system, the leadership role of boards of health makes them an essential link between public health services and a healthy community. Uniquely positioned to deliver technical expertise in governance and leadership, board development, health priorities, and public health policy, NALBOH strives to strengthen good governance where public health begins at the local level.
