Personal Statement As a PhD-prepared nurse with informatics training, I believe that I have an obligation to apply the most updated information technology to facilitate better quality of care. My doctoral dissertation focused on standardizing eligibility criteria in cancer nursing randomized controlled trials, including the topic of cancer pain research, which I received an award for outstanding Ph.D. student dissertation. My program of research is to facilitate symptom management research among cancer patients and vulnerable populations (e.g., veterans, children, individuals with intellectual disabilities) by utilizing state-of-the-science informatics tools. My ongoing research projects include to facilitate a personalized cancer pain care, develop proactive strategies to early detect depression among children, adolescent, or individuals with intellectual disabilities, develop new instrument/survey for measuring health-related quality of life among people with intellectual disabilities, and develop an approach to detect social isolation and lack of social connections. 1. Contribution to Science 1. Facilitating a better Electronic Medication Administration Record (emar) System for Nurses. Nurses are the biggest users of electronic medical records and play a crucial role in the process of transforming patient records from paper format to the digitized format. Electronic medication administration record (emar) is the system that nurses use continuously for administrating medication to patents. However, it was unclear how to design the tool addressing nurse workflow and whether the developed emars meet nurses needs. I worked with experienced usability experts to publish an article to suggest the key concepts of designing change of shift handoffs for nurses and conducted studies evaluate the usability of the emar from two EHRs separately. We found that these two emra systems presented the similar usability issue distribution with the highest rate of not matching to workflow, invisible system actions, and not preventing errors, which impeded nurses abilities to detect critical information in the emar. a. West J Nurs Res Jul;37(7): PMCID: PMC Facilitating Cancer Nursing Research by Using Modern Informatics Techniques. To facilitate the nursing research, I was the database developer and utilized a ubiquitous database program, Microsoft Access, to design a complex clinical research database to store individuals' symptoms and their implemented self-care strategies which were changed on a week to week basis. I also worked as a data analyst and statistician to present how we could successfully link the research data to population database if researchers include linkage and human subjects protection plans related to linkage in the initial study design. For better information exchange and interoperability, I was involved in a study as research associate to interview and identify the needs of key personals during the poison control data exchange between the poison control center and Utah Department of Health. In my doctoral dissertation, I identified concepts embedded in edibility criteria in cancer nursing research for developing standardized terminology and mapped those concepts to the NCI Thesaurus. This result showed that the NCI Thesaurus can be used to support the majority of the edibility criteria concepts from cancer nursing research. a. Guo J, Wong B, Beck S. Using a content analysis to identify study eligibility criteria concepts in cancer nursing research. Comput Inform Nurs Jul;32(7): PMID: Developing, Validating, and Utilizing Measurements for Healthcare Outcomes. To appropriately assess and evaluate the outcome of patient care, with a team of oncology nursing researcher, we noticed that there was a lack of a tool to evaluate the quality of pain care from patients perspectives. I worked as a pre-doctoral research associate in research database management and data analysis in the project with a group of experienced nursing researchers for five years to develop a valid measurement tool, Pain Care Quality Surverys (PainCQ), with two subscales for evaluating the quality of pain care provided by interdisciplinary care team and nurses, respectively. To fill up the gap of knowledge of unknown health literacy level in juvenile correction population, I, as a statistician, worked with two nursing practitioners, who are regularly providing health care to juvenile offenders, to conduct a descriptive research to assess the health literacy of the juvenile offenders by using Rapid Estimate of Adolescent Literacy in Medicine (REALM-teen). To be able to measure the attitudes of working with other healthcare professionals, I was part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team to develop a valid and comprehensive scale, Interprofessional Attitudes Scale (IPAS), guided by Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice published by the Interprofessional Educational Collaborative. In that study, I worked as a statistician conducting exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis for the IPAS. a. Beck SL, Towsley GL, Pett MA, Berry PH, Smith EL, Brant JM, Guo J. 4 4. Evaluating the Quality of Evidence in Cancer Nursing Research. The use of evidence has a positive influence to provide high quality health care; however, it was unknown the quality of published journal articles regarding randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in cancer nursing research. As the primary investigator, I worked with other nursing scientists addressed this issue by utilizing standardized guideline for publishing RCTs, CONsolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT). We evaluated both abstracts and the content of the RCT publications and studies showed that adherences to the CONSORT checklist in cancer nursing RCTs were suboptimal. a.
