INSIDE Letter to the Community Just the Facts Timing, Training and Teamwork Turning Despair into Hope Paying Your Bill Just Got Easier The Health of Our Community 2017 Report to Our Community, May South Third Street Montrose, CO MontroseHospital.com

Letter to the Community The year 2017 brought a great deal of change, transition and growth at Montrose Memorial Hospital. The new 3D mammography system, the davinci robotic surgical systems and other critical equipment upgrades provide you and your family with the most advanced care available. As an important adjunct to technology, the board believes that the people in this organization are the hospital s most notable asset and each one is integral to the great care that is provided at MMH. There is such pride taken at MMH, in the state of the art facility and in a job well done. Being acknowledged as one of the Top 20 Rural Community Hospitals in the Nation, receiving a 4 Star Rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, and recognized as a High Performing Hospital for Knee Replacements by U.S. News & World Report are all accolades to celebrate and share. I encourage you to read more in this newsletter about all the ways MMH is leading the way for a healthier community including the installation of The Box, which allows for fast and safe disposal of expired or unwanted medications. In addition, the MMHI Board of Directors, the Board of County Commissioners and the MMH Board of Trustees reached a settlement regarding the legal issues that have been going on since Hours of negotiations, discussions and diligence paid off and we are moving forward and focusing on the most important issue, the healthcare needs of our communities. The effort invested in resolving this conflict paid off in a great way for our hospital and community. The agreement between the parties puts to rest the distrust and misconceptions that had been so pervasive and blazes a clear path of cooperation going forward. MMH, like all rural hospitals, faces tremendous challenges in maintaining and expanding its exceptional care. Working together, we can achieve so much. The first fruit of this cooperation is the successful refinancing of the hospital s 2003 bonds in December 2017, which saves over $500,000 per year in interest payments while removing the mortgage on the hospital s buildings and property. On behalf of the individuals who make Montrose Memorial Hospital truly the place where Friends and Family care for Friends and Family, we thank you for trusting us with your health care needs and those of your loved ones this past year. We ll be here to make good health a part of your future Just the Facts Number of licensed beds: 75 Number of employees: 680 Physicians, CRNA's, Nurse Midwives, other Providers (23 Specialties): 130 Total Patient Days: 10,523 Outpatient Visits: 126,394 ER Visits: 20,377 Surgeries: 3,135 Chemotherapy Appointments: 15,550 Radiation oncology treatments: 2,932 Mammograms: 7,729 All Radiology Treatments: X-ray, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, CT, MRI 46,462 Births: 431 Joint Replacements: 216 Heart Caths/Procedures: 669 Meals Served: 286,677 All Community Benefit Provided: 2015/2016 $19,118,570 Ron Courtney Montrose Memorial Hospital Board of Directors Chairperson % of Indigent (charity) Care Provided: 1.84% Salary and Benefits: $48,231,811

Paying Your MMH Bill Just Got Easier It s hard enough for patients to understand medical terminology and clinical directions for healing, but it s just as hard to understand the billing process and financial obligation. Montrose Memorial Hospital has chosen to make this easier by placing our financial customer service representatives in a more convenient location. By moving to the first floor near Admissions, these knowledgeable people can help you understand your bill, your insurance, payment plan and financial assistance opportunities. MMH also wants to help you understand what you might owe before a procedure is done. Our pricing is transparent and we have tools to estimate your portion of the bill. Make an appointment today by calling or stop by our convenient location now adjacent to the main Admissions area. MMH Introduces The Box MMH s New Initiative to Help Reduce Drug Abuse and Protect the Environment Take a look in almost anyone s medicine cabinet and there will no doubt be a wide assortment of old, leftover medications, both prescription and over the counter. People think that perhaps they might use them someday, even though the drugs have probably expired, leaving them ineffective or unsafe. Or perhaps they don t know how to dispose of them. Enter THE BOX, a new service provided by the hospital to help remove expired or unwanted drugs from the community. The big, green disposal box is secured in the hospital s Emergency Department lobby and is available to the public 24/7. It is much like an old fashioned mailbox, allowing for disposal but not retrieval of drugs. This is a safe, secure and compliant way to collect unused medications, both over the counter and prescription, and keep them out of the hands of others, said George Papineau, Pharmacy Department Director at Montrose Memorial Hospital. The drugs can then be disposed of properly so they do not find their way into the water supply or trash dumps causing potential harm to the environment. Prescription drug abuse, particularly of opioids, has been described as a national crisis and medicines in home cabinets are very susceptible to being abused. Studies demonstrate that a majority of abused drugs are acquired from family and friends, including teens taking drugs from the home medicine cabinet. More than 70% of people who develop opioid disorders start by taking leftover medications prescribed for someone else, often a family member. It has been extremely gratifying to see the positive response from the community and how many people have already brought in drugs for disposal, continued Papineau. We take both over the counter and prescription medications, preferably not liquid, and there is no paperwork to fill out. If anyone has any questions about getting rid of their old medications, they are welcome to call the Pharmacy office at the hospital at

MMH is Dedicated to Quality Care Our responsibility to our community is to promote health and wellness and to be here when you need us. Whether you or a loved one needs emergency services, inpatient care, cancer care, routine screenings, rehabilitation therapy or lab work, we are here to provide high quality care and service. Healthcare is complicated we get it. We use unfamiliar terminology, sophisticated studies and complex information that can be daunting even to those of us familiar with the system. Navigating the system can be confusing and overwhelming and we are here to help. Choosing where to receive your healthcare services is an important decision and it is not always easy to understand your options. Historically, healthcare costs and outcomes have not been readily available to consumers, complicating the decision-making process. In 2016 the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the first overall hospital quality star rating on hospital comparison ( The rating was developed to help healthcare consumers compare options in an easy to understand format. The star ratings pull data from existing quality measures that are tracked by hospitals and CMS. These measures include mortality rates, readmissions, appropriate use of medical imaging, patient satisfaction and timely and effective care, and a team of experts was appointed by CMS to identify those most applicable to all hospitals. They next developed a methodology and criteria for a rating system based on a 1-5 star scale. Over 4,500 hospitals across the country receive a star rating. The average star rating is 3 out of 5 stars, with about 30% of hospitals receiving 4 out of 5 stars and approximately 9% of hospitals receiving 5 out of 5. Measure Group Mortality (Death) Readmission Safety of Care (Infections and Complications) Patient Experience Efficient Use of Medical Imaging Timeliness of Care Effectiveness of Care

We know there are challenges with any system used to summarize the healthcare experience and our patients and families deserve to have information that helps them make the right decisions about healthcare services. We are proud to report that MMH has scored 4 out of 5 stars for the second year in a row. While we continue to strive for 5 out of 5 stars, we feel this is quite an achievement for our community hospital. There are seven care performance categories that make up the star ratings score. The table provided summarizes MMH s performance in each category. The healthcare providers at MMH are committed to a continued focus on quality improvement. Teams within the hospital bring together physicians, nurses, hospital administrators, support staff, patients, families and others to help make positive changes that improve outcomes and patient experience. If you have questions about quality of care data on or on our website, we encourage you to contact us. 6 Timing, Training, Teamwork When someone needs immediate medical care, every second counts. Timing, training and teamwork are critical. In a joint regional effort to improve the safety and quality of patient care, Montrose Memorial Hospital has acquired a life like manikin to be used for training emergency personnel. The SimMan 3G is a realistic patient simulator that allows Emergency Medical Services personnel and hospital staff to experience authentic human reactions and realistic simulations for practice of skills in a safe, lifelike scenario without the inhibitions of working on a real patient. The simulator can replicate symptoms of everything from cardiac arrest to a gunshot wound to an allergic reaction or asthma attack, said Erin Houk, MSN, RN and Trauma Program Manager at Montrose Memorial Hospital. A trauma team is much like the pit crew at a race track, she continued. Real time practice and simulation experiences lead to improved teamwork, communication, efficiency, clinical knowledge and the delivery of optimal patient care. The manikin will be available for staff, clinicians and practitioners at the hospital and will also serve as a regional training resource for both professional and volunteer emergency personnel. Pre-hospital and arrival at the Emergency Department time periods are crucial, added Trauma Medical Director Dr. Collin Sharp. When caring for trauma patients, time is often the most important predictor of a good recovery. Turning Despair into Hope In late 2005 Frank and Jan Kinion started a project to raise money for cancer care in the community. Their goal was to raise $3,000 by selling cancer awareness bracelets. We had maybe 15 members of the car club at our house on a Sunday afternoon and assembled bracelets, said Frank. They continued their work every Sunday and it paid off big time. They surpassed their goal by 967% and after six months were able to donate $29,000 to the San Juan Healthcare Foundation for the San Juan Cancer Center. Frank credits their success to the support of local car club members, Alpine Bank, their son, and divine guidance. It was unbelievable, he continued. We later learned that people were selling bracelets in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. It became a worldwide project. Frank also donated his time to volunteer at the San Juan Cancer Center, which had become a second home to he and Jan while she went through treatment there. Jan passed away in 2010 but Frank continued to build bracelets and only now is finally winding down the project. In all, the Kinions raised an astonishing $77,000 for cancer care in the community. Our main goal was to comfort patients and get things that the nurses wanted, he added. Not needed, but wanted. Having donated thousands of hours of time, Frank and Jan established a legacy in the Montrose area that will be remembered for many years to come.

Just a few of MMH Services RiteCare Brings Help to Children Over the past 20 years, 918 pediatric patients have been fortunate to work with the RiteCare program. Established by the Scottish Rite, a charitable arm of the Masons, the program expands care to families in Montrose and Delta by increasing access to Mountain View Therapy s speech therapy services. Specifically, the program aids families whose insurance does not cover the cost of speech therapy services, which are often due to developmental delays. According to Patti Anderson, a Speech Language Pathologist at Mountain View Therapy who works with pediatric patients, the program is important for bringing essential services to young patients who would otherwise not get the care they need. The RiteCare program has been investing in children s speech/language services in Montrose since 1998 and has paid more than $1,000,000 toward this purpose. 3-D Mammography Acute Rehabilitation Unit Breast Feeding support Cardiac Cath Labs CareFlight Air Ambulance Childbirth and Sibling Classes Colonoscopies and Endoscopies Complete Cancer Care: Chemotherapy and Radiation Treatments CPR and First Aid community classes Family Birthing Center Intensive Care Unit Joint Replacement Center Laboratory Level III Trauma Center Medical Imaging: (MRI, CT, Mammography, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine) Medical/Surgical Unit Minimally Invasive and Same Day Surgery Options Mountain View Therapy: Cardiopulmonary Rehab Occupational Therapy Physical Therapy Speech Therapy Mountain View Therapy at Montrose Recreation Center and at the Ridgway Clinic Nutrition and Diabetes Services Outpatient Surgery Ostomy and Incontinence Clinics Prostate Cancer: Fusion Guided Biopsies Respiratory Care Services Robotic Assisted Surgery Sleep Study Lab Stroke Telemedicine Support Groups Surgical Services Wound Care Clinic
