About Riley Maternity & Newborn Health The maternity and newborn health program at Riley Children s Health brings together a multidisciplinary team of maternal fetal medicine physicians, neonatologists, as well as pediatric and adult subspecialists to provide the best care for mothers and babies. With this coordinated care plan, along with the state s leading technology and research in infant mortality, Hoosier moms have access to better outcomes, whether their diagnosis is provided early in the pregnancy, or they are transferred to IU Health via Lifeline with an immediate need. The course is presented to approximately 15,000 clinicians a year. It can be used as a competency assessment to validate the knowledge and skills of perinatal clinicians who utilize fetal monitoring and includes a post-test to assess the learner s knowledge. Skills taught and knowledge assessed include: Maternal and fetal physiology Interpretation of fetal and uterine monitor tracings Evaluation of auscultated fetal heart sounds Leopold s maneuvers Placement of fetal spiral electrodes and intrauterine pressure catheters Enhanced communication evaluation and strategies This course assumes that the learner has completed entry-level fetal monitoring education, and is designed for clinicians who utilize fetal heart monitoring in the intrapartum setting. AWHONN maintains its position that only registered nurses, advanced practice nurses and physicians with professional expertise should initiate and evaluate the ongoing use of EFM technology. Furthermore, AWHONN strongly advises that all nurses who perform fetal assessment during the antepartum or intrapartum period complete a course of study that includes the physiologic interpretation of EFM data and its implications for labor support. Physicians may attend the intermediate and advanced courses and may receive continuing medical education credit for full participation. The continuing medical education credit is managed by Professional Education Services Group and will be available via the AWHONN online CNE/CME system. 3 AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring Price: $120 Duration: 1 day / 8 hours This instructor-led course is designed to prepare clinicians to care for patients with complex fetal heart monitoring tracings. Course components include: Complex case studies that include recommended interventions Communicating with colleagues Advanced principles of maternal-fetal physiology Optional online post-test This course is designed for clinicians who previously completed the AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course or a comparable fetal monitoring educational program, as well as for those who hold certification or added credentials in fetal heart monitoring. Must have successfully completed the AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course. Some exposure to fetal heart rate assessment is beneficial. This course is intended for a novice perinatal nurse, provider or an experienced perinatal clinician wanting a fetal monitoring review. The text entitled Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles & Practices is a beneficial reference for course preparation. March 16 September 17 IU Health Methodist Hospital Labor and Delivery Unit - A3304 Perinatal Loss Support Price: $45 Duration: 3 hours This course provides an overview of bedside care for patients experiencing a loss during an inpatient stay. It will include evidence-based practices and specific information about memory-making and discharge teaching. The class is limited to six participants. This course is intended for staff working with families who have lost a baby due to miscarriage, fetal death or neonatal death. Participation is open to all audiences. 4 Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders Price: $30 Duration: 3 hours This course presents an overview of pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders that include The Blues ; depression; panic/ anxiety disorders; obsessive compulsive disorder; PTSD and postpartum psychosis. Risk factors, nursing assessment, causes and treatment options are also discussed. It is focused on providing bedside maternal-child and neonatal nurses the basics in assisting a breastfeeding mother with counseling on optimal baby feeding positioning, latch assessment, pumping and more. The content is delivered in accordance with the Baby-Friendly initiative and could prove helpful in the journey to a Baby-Friendly facility. This course is intended for healthcare professionals assisting new mothers with breastfeeding. Participation is open to all audiences. January 26 March 9 April 20 June 1 July 13 August 24 October 5 November 16 IU Health Methodist Hospital Labor and Delivery Unit - A3304 ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES Learner S.T.A.B.L.E. Course Price: $40 Duration: 8 hours S.T.A.B.L.E. targets the post-resuscitation care of sick neonates and is considered by many experts to be the follow-up, complementary program to the American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). S.T.A.B.L.E. serves as a concise educational tool to organize the myriad of details necessary to stabilize and care for sick infants. The S.T.A.B.L.E. program involves an 8-hour interactive didactic presentation by an expert in neonatal nursing or medicine. The S.T.A.B.L.E. program is the widely accepted neonatal post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization educational and clinical tool. This course is intended for perinatal nurses; RTs; physicians; medics and EMS. Training is geared toward multiprofessional resuscitation teams working in their own environment using high-fidelity mannequins. Instructors trained and experienced in simulation education will facilitate the scenarios. Particular emphasis is placed on delivery room technical skills, team communication in a crisis situation, utilization of available resources, as well as stabilization and management of mothers and critically ill newborns prior to the arrival of tertiary care transport team, if transfer is necessary. 5 Simulation Instructor Course Incorporating simulation-based medical education (SBME) into your clinical practice can increase safety, decrease medical errors, improve clinical judgment and promote self-confidence. Much different than the traditional see, teach, do educational methods most familiar to learners, simulation-based medical education fully immerses learners in a realistic environment that promotes the cognitive, behavioral and technical skills used in their clinical practices. This allows learners to pull from their own personal experiences in a non-threatening way, as well as to analyze and troubleshoot issues that may arise. Through this 2 ½ day intensive course, our multidisciplinary team trains healthcare providers at all levels of experience in the skills necessary to initiate a simulation program. Learners create scenarios based on their specific needs, execute those scenarios with practice using video and embedded participants with mock injuries for added realism.
