Intermediate STIF Integrated Additional competencies Competencies assessed 20.1 To correctly carry out assessment, treatment & management for a woman wishing to start Contraception 20.2 To correctly carry out assessment, treatment & management for a woman starting Combined Hormonal Contraception 20.3 To correctly carry out assessment, treatment & management for a woman starting Oral Progesterone-only Contraception 20.4 To correctly carry out assessment, treatment & management for a woman starting Injectable Progesterone Contraception 20.5 To correctly carry out assessment and discussion for insertion of contraceptive implant STIF Competency TTT Birm

3 Competencies assessed 20.6 To correctly carry out assessment and discussion for insertion of IUD/IUS 20.7 To correctly carry out assessment, treatment & management for a woman with Break through Bleeding from Hormonal Method 20.8 To correctly carry out assessment,& management for a woman needing a routine check of IUD/IUS 20.9 To correctly carry out assessment and management for a woman requesting Emergency Contraception To correctly carry out assessment and discussion for a woman seeking advice on planning a pregnancy Competencies assessed Counsel Women With Unwanted/Unplanned Pregnancy Assess Patient Reporting a Sexual Assault, CBD Psychosexual Medicine, CBD Non bleeding contraceptive side effects STIF Competency TTT Birm

4 What Does Training Involve? Clinical attachment in level 3 service Initial meeting with clinical trainer Minimum 2 initial training sessions 25 clinics in the last 12 months in a level 3 GUM or fully integrated SRH service Trainee fills in log book Formal assessment of competence every 1-2 weeks Final assessment Trainer specification GUM/SRH Consultants (Medical or Nursing) 1. Up-to-date DFSRH/DFFP or Equivalent University qualification for Nurse Consultants 2. Currently regularly prescribing contraception at least 2 sessions a week in either standalone contraceptive clinics or fully integrated contraception and sexual health clinics. 3. A minimum of 2 years of previous experience in regularly prescribing contraception. 4. Formal training in teaching, assessment and mentoring skills 5. Attendance at the STIFCompetency Train the trainers workshop prior to training. STIF Competency TTT Birm

5 Trainer specification Doctors who are not GUM/SRH Consultants 1. Up-to-date DFSRH/DFFP 2. Currently regularly prescribing contraception at least 2 sessions a week in either standalone contraceptive clinics or integrated contraception and sexual health clinics. 3. Minimum 4 years of full time equivalent working experience within a Level 3 GUM/Integrated sexual health or Specialist contraception service (with a minimum of 2 years of previous experience in regularly prescribing contraception.) 4. Attendance at the STIFCompetency Train the trainers workshop prior to training 5. Formal training in teaching, assessment and mentoring skills Trainer specification Senior nursing staff may undertake much of the day to day training and assessment of more junior nursing staff in both STIFIntermediate and STIFIntegrated. The Registered STIFCompetency Trainer must be confident that these senior nurses are competent in the use of the assessment tools and that they themselves have the required level of clinical competence in order to train. It is advisable that all members of the training and assessment team attend the STIFCompetency Train the Trainers event. STIF Competency TTT Birm
