1 Northern Rockies Medical Center Employee Wellness: The Key to IPOPULATION HEALTH Toni Altenburg, NRMC s Better Health Improvement Specialist, began her employment with NRMC in March of 2014 as part of the Frontier Medicine Better Health Partnership grant. She has a Bachelor s Degree from Carroll College in Health Information Management and is currently working on her Masters Degree in Health Education. Besides 13 years of healthcare experience, she most recently has been working in the community as a certified personal trainer. She got certified as a personal trainer 9 years ago and has since worked providing one on one personal training services as well as group fitness. Through this work, she became aware that there was a great demand for trained fitness professionals in her community, and at the same time realizing the dire condition of the health of her community. Her desire is to use her knowledge, skills, and training to improve the health status of the community members of Glacier County. Upon completing her Masters program, she will seek certification as a Certified Health Education Specialist. In addition, she is working on certification as a Health & Wellness coach through WellCoaches. 1

5 NRMC What is worksite wellness? An organized program intended to assist employees and their families in making voluntary behavior changes that reduce health risks and enhance their quality of life. Why offer an employee wellness program? Because it is the right thing to do Helps attract top talent Improves morale and productivity Improves employee retention Decreases absenteeism Increases productivity Decreased health insurance costs 5
