Acute and critical care nurses rely on AACN for expert knowledge and influence to fulfill their promise to patients and their families. AACN drives excellence because nothing less is acceptable. 5 6 AACN VISION AACN VALUES AACN is dedicated to creating a healthcare system driven by the needs of patients and families where acute and critical care nurses make their optimal contribution. AACN, its members, volunteers and staff will honor the following: Ethical accountability and integrity in relationships, organizational decisions and stewardship of resources. Leadership to enable individuals to make their optimal contribution through lifelong learning, critical thinking and inquiry. Excellence and innovation at every level of the organization to advance the profession. Collaboration to ensure quality patient-and family-focused care. 1

2 Healthy work environments Palliative and end-of-life care Staffing and workforce development AACN ADVOCACY INITIATIVES: 7 Skilled communication True collaboration Effective decision making Appropriate staffing Meaningful recognition Authentic leadership HEALTHY WORK ENVIRONMENT STANDARDS 8 HWE: 9 PALLIATIVE AND END-OF-LIFE CARE 10 AACN provides tools with the following objectives: Covers clinical scenarios across the lifespan Uses research-based protocols and true-to-life case studies Sharpens palliative care assessment and intervention skills Increases proficiency in communicating Teaches how to effectively facilitate decision-making during end-of-life care Gives proven techniques for lowering personal stress levels 11 PALLIATIVE AND END-OF-LIFE CARE: 12 STAFFING Staffing is both a process and an outcome and often difficult to define. Critical care staffing levels must be driven by the unique needs of each patient and the competencies of the nurse. 2

3 STAFFING (THE SYNERGY MODEL): The Synergy Model: Linking Patient Needs to Nurse Competencies 13 STANDARDS Authoritative statements that describe the level of care or performance common to the profession of nursing by which the quality of nursing practice can be judged." 14 Critical Care Nurse, Vol 19, No 1, February 1999 DuAnne Foster Edwards, RN, MN, CS STANDARDS AND SCOPE AND STANDARDS Establishing and Sustaining Healthy Work Environments: A Journey to Excellence, 2 nd Edition Acute and Critical Care Nursing Practice Acute and Critical Care Nursing Practice also reflect the key concepts of the: AACN Mission, Vision and Values Synergy Model Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist Practice Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Practice AACN Tele-ICU Nursing Practice 15 CONSENSUS MODEL Provides a definitive foundation for nurses who want to pursue an advanced practice credential. Problems with existing regulation included lack of common definitions related to APRN roles, lack of standardization in programs leading to APRN preparation, proliferation of specialties and subspecialties and lack of common legal recognition across jurisdictions. The development of the new regulatory model sought to alleviate these problems and at the same time enhance patient safety, improve consumer understanding of APRN roles, provide ease in regulation and promote interstate mobility of APRNs. 16 Hartigan, C.
