1 Issue 1 January 2017 In this issue: VP Message in English, French and Chinese 1-3 WCET next conference: 4 Vice-President s Message Change Elizabeth A. Ayello, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, CWON, ETN, MAPWCA, FAAN WCET Vice President, World Ostomy Awareness Day 2016 Celebrations 7 The AASTN - Australia years of Stomatherapy in Belgium 28 The 10th Anniversary of Nanjing ETNEP & Chinese ETNEP Directors Forum 28 Other up-coming Education Events 30 This is the time of the year when for many cultures, the calendar year changes. For some, the new year of 2017 began on 1 January, for others the year of the Rooster will be ushered in later on 27 January. Other cultures will mark the start of a new year at other times throughout the year. Although the dates are different depending upon which calendar is followed [Gregorian (internationally-used) or lunar, etc.], what is common to most is a time of celebration, being with family and friends, special foods, and reflection on the year past. For some, that reflection can result in resolutions to make changes in their live and do better in the new year. Having a clean slate of days before you provides a wonderful opportunity to make the best of each and every year. My personal wishes for each and every WCET member to have a great year. Collectively, members of the WCET change lives every day in their nursing practice. As they stand by their ostomy, wound or incontinence patients, they provide the needed knowledge, expert care, compassion, and support to make each day count for the better. Their stories are inspirational and meaningful. This issue of the BullETin contains many reflections of what our WCET members from Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Croatia, Iran, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates have done over the past year. Remember that change requires one to act, or as it has been written; Action Changes Things These members have not only chosen to change the lives of patients or educational level of their colleagues about ostomy, wounds or incontinence, they have also taken the time to share their stories with all WCET members. I hope you enjoy reading the diverse stories that our WCET members have provided for you and perhaps it might provide you some ideas for change that you can implement in the coming year. Also take time to review announcements of the many educational congresses and conferences that will be held in the coming year. Your knowledge should always be enhanced by attending educational seminars, congresses or conferences. Here s to a great year! Sincerely, Elizabeth BullETin January

7 World Ostomy Awareness Day 2016 Celebrations In Canada Arden Townshend, RN, ET, Ostomy Care and Supply Centre, New Westminster, BC, Canada For this special day, we hosted an Education Day. We had about 200 people with an ostomy and their supporter(s) attend a full-day function where we had speakers present on a variety of topics. We had an insurance agent speak about getting the right policy after ostomy surgery and serious illness. We also had someone from the Canadian Air Travel Safety Authority speak about getting through security at the airport seamlessly. A surgeon joined us to speak about the surgical considerations associated with ostomy site selection, and we had an ostomy blogger, accompanied by a person who makes adapted ostomy garments, talk about clothing options. It was a great chance for people to learn about life after ostomy surgery, as well as meet other people who have an ostomy. Thanks so much for collecting stories from peoples celebrations of this day. In China As in the speaker room, it was a full house in our booth! Zhang Shuangshuang, Secretary of Shandong ETNEP, China Rose Angels To Make Life of Patients with Ostomy Better. October 1 st is the annual World Ostomy Awareness Day. The existence of the day is indicating us that there are people who are living with ostomy suffering from grief and struggle associated with disease and ostomy. As a wound ostomy continence nurse, we shoulder the responsibility to care for them, give support and guidance for their selfcare and improve their quality of life. Shandong ETNEP is founded in September this year. There are 20 students who will become ETs in November. On October 1st, we held an activity to mark this day to increase the awareness of the students about World Ostomy Day. Firstly, a video reflecting ostomy patients life was played and the students were aware of the real experience a patient faced with. Secondly, an introduction of WCET including its organization, journal and scholarship, symposium is shown to them and they got to know how to become a member of WCET. Then they learned to make stoma model by themselves using the balloon and foam. With the stoma model, they made a heart-shaped drawing board and left an impression of their fingers which meant they will care ostomy patients with heart. Finally, they wrote their wishes to patients and own specialised career of Wound, Ostomy and Continence nursing. The students all expressed that they felt warmness and hope for future by the activity and would learn harder to give high quality of nursing to the patients with ostomy. BullETin January

11 Third, they discussed the further extension of the E-health platform for stoma home care. So more patients will enjoy the convenience in the Internet era and get professional care at home. Following Norma s vision, we Jiangsu ETs will always establish our goal, and keep exceeding our former achievements. In Costa Rica Andrés Campos Vargas, WCET Costa Rica International Delegate Due to the ostomy awareness day on October 1 st, we ran a campaign about the knowledge of the ostomy and how the people can still live with one. This campaign started with the idea of give a voice to the ostomates and their families. The idea grew with the companion of the Asociación decuci & Crohn de Costa Rica, OstoCare CR. The idea was to take pictures of some ostomates and expose the pictures in a gallery for a period of time (from September 26 th to 30 d ). Besides the picture of every ostomy model, we wrote a little review of his/her story about the ostomy (the reason to be an ostomate). The theme of the exposition was Salvavidas (Life Guard) this to give a name to the ostomy. We had 5 models, professional photographs, a great team of people that work donating their time and ideas to bring this great idea to life, The Asociación de CUCI & Crohn de Costa Rica has been doing a campaign about Crohn and Ulcerative Colitis for some years now. The reason to be a partner in the campaign is because a high number of associates had an ostomy (mostly of them are women from 21 to 35 years old). They were really interested in give information and support to the women with risk to have an ostomy. OstoCare CR (Andrés Campos Vargas) is a small company in Costa Rica dedicated to ostomy since 2011 has been working with ostomates from all ages helping them to understand living with an ostomy (visiting patients, ostomy talks, home education, hospital education and consulting). The Campaign had been placed in Costa Rica Hospitals offering to the ostomates to raise their voices and help each other to become successful getting their lives back and knowing how to take care of their ostomy. In October the campaign had be traveling around Costa Rica so we had the ostomy month all of October and helped the ostomy association of Costa Rica to became stronger and louder. The campaign caught the attention of the National TV (the models had an interview and the Channel 7 of Costa Rica had recorded a special program about ostomies). Radio and newspaper were also interested about the ostomy awareness. All of this to give the right support to the ostomates, their families as Health professionals to understand about the ostomy and to understand about living with an ostomy. Our idea is to keep with the photographs every year and involve more people. It is a lot of feelings, stories and laughs about everyone having good days and not so good days, but in the end, they all know that are doing something really brave and a good example to the others. Ivo Pedišić Sisak, Croatia Tanja Miodrag RN, BSN Symposium on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with stoma , The fight with prejudices or challenge worth fighting? BullETin January

15 The quality of health care is an indispensable segment of daily work. Following the development of the profession, working on self-improvement this year we put a challenge in front us. The challenge worth fighting. As we did last year, and this year we marked the International Day of persons with stoma performed, as a one-day symposium. The initiative started on abdominal surgery at General Hospital Md. Ivo Pedišić, Sisak, from head nurse. Initiative had generous support of nurses, doctors, physiotherapists and psychologists of our institution. General hospital Dr.Ivo Pedišić, Sisak, Croatia As head nurse of the Department of General and Abdominal Surgery (Tanja Miodrag, RN, BSN.) I organized numerous courses with the aim of spreading knowledge and skills in the field of ostomy. I also participated in numerous national and international conferences, exchanging colleague experiences and improving nurse practice. All that effort and work has resulted in the idea of keeping this symposium, which is truly demonstrated what it means to strive collaboration and teamwork in order to achieve excellence in nursing practice. What makes us unique is precisely the fact that we recognize the importance of education, the importance of developing multi-disciplinary team and encouraging mutual cooperation for the second year in a row. Precisely this is a step forward in improving the quality of service provided and the reduction of prejudice to the public about the concept of stoma and ostomy. The symposium was organised by the Organising Board Dr. Ivo Pedišić Sisak, HLZ- Sisak and affiliates HUMS-a (Croatian Nurses Association) Sisak. This year s topic of the symposium was: Living with stoma-struggle with prejudice or challenge worth fighting?. We believe that this is a question that any potential or current patient with a stoma meets every day. This is a question that requires an answer! As the symposium was attended by 140 participants we showed that their support is the only way how we can change things for the better. With the aim of informing the public about the problems of stoma patients, symposium was covered by the County Sisačko-Moslavačka, network TV and local radio stations. Attendees of this meeting BullETin January

16 Keynote speakers of this Symposium The aim of this symposium was to inform the public and brought down the prejudices which are present in the life of individuals with a stoma. Goal was to emphasize that Enterostomal Therapy is something important, that ET Nursing is a necessity in Republic of Croatia and that something has to be done. Though of set of lectures through which we covered all health professionals, we have tried to demonstrate a multidisciplinary team of professionals who need to ensure that people with stoma are providing the quality of life that they truly deserve. The importance of implementing Enterostomal Therapy in our health care system was something that we heard from guest speakers and colleagues, such as Ivanka Benčic, RN, BSN, ET whose lectures certainly emphasised the needs for having more ETs in our country. Ivanka Benčić, RN, BSN, ET Tanja Lupieri, RN, MSN, President of the Croatian Nurses Association s (HUMS) Support for the maintenance of this symposium was provided by the president of HUMS-a, Tanja Lupieri RN, MSN, showing how the Croatian Association of Nurses (HUMS) is truly an association behind its members and promotes nursing as a profession. Response of colleagues from various institutions outside of our county is a good example of how we should strive to improve our profession and accept the challenges. Lectures from our internist and our surgeons did the first session of the symposium. Lectures included more frequent colorectal cancer incidence, methods of treatment and complications of ostomy. Accent was placed on the importance of timely detection of problems with the possibility of their solution or treatment. What followed were the topics in the domain of nurses as equal members of the team. Nurses showed that targeted interventions affect quality of life and to that knowledge we can change things for the better. BullETin January

17 With enthusiasm and love for the profession, head nurse of general and abdominal surgery at General Hospital Md. Ivo Pedisic Tanja Miodrag together with the team of nursing staff and the support of head nurses in surgery (Alma Pisarić and Ivana Peterle Kesner) strive for excellence and implementation of new knowledge into everyday practice. New insights were presented in working with so far achieved results. What is important to note that the results are the product of labor and organizing courses, lectures and participate in conferences and meetings. From left to right: Alma Pisarić, RN, BSN, Ivana Pererle Kesner, RN, BSN and Tanja Miodrag RN, BSN In the last session we gathered team of professionals involved in the care of person with a stoma. General Hospital Md. Ivo Pedišić truly have an early preparatory and post-operative rehabilitation for patients with stoma, more about that is told by physiotherapists in our institution. That full access to the patient takes a little more, we heard about psychosocial adaptation to the stoma presented by a colleague who is a psychologist. Important links in maintaining the continuity of health care certainly are our visiting nurses and colleagues from home care who also participated in this symposium. The end of the symposium marked an active workshop divided into three groups that included Enterostomal Therapists from Croatia that finished the regular program of WCET. One of the lectures: Md. Antun Šarić, abdominal surgeon and head of department for general and abdominal surgery at GH Md. Ivo Pedišić Sisak. BullETin January

18 Work and multidisciplinary approach is the only guidelines for success and my personal belief. After workshops and well done symposium we had socializing and conversation including our former patients, current stoma patients, in the direction of the development of the profession and life of person with a stoma. We are proud to say that behind us is successfully done symposium with clearly sent a message - that life with a stoma challenge is worth fighting for. 20 Louise Rafferty, Senior Colorectal Clinical Specialist, KFSH&RC Riyadh, WCET Saudi Arabia ID and member of the WCET Education Committee Colorectal cancer is the 2 nd most common cancer overall in Saudi Arabia (Saudi Cancer Registry, 2010). Although a national screening programme has been proposed within the kingdom as of today it does not exist (Alsanea et al, 2015). Therefore when many patients present with symptoms of colorectal cancer it is often found to be at an advanced stage, making it more likely that an ostomy will be needed as part of their treatment. As in many parts of the world talking about your ostomy or bowel problems is a taboo subject and in Saudi Arabia this is no different (Murray et al, 2015). The Colorectal Therapy Nursing Program in collaboration with the Colorectal Surgery Department held an Ostomy Awareness Day at the KFSH&RC Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 31 st March The main aim of the day was to try and correct any misconceptions people have about ostomies and get people talking about their bowel conditions, without feeling embarrassed (Rafferty, 2016). Members of the media attended providing coverage of the event for national TV and newspapers. Guests got to walk through the giant inflatable colon, where they learnt about the early signs of colorectal cancer. Educational leaflets about the signs, symptoms and prevention of colorectal cancer were disseminated. There was also an expert on hand discussing hereditary diseases and the different genetic tests available. Our nutritional department dieticians were available to offer advice on a vast range of diets. Big screen TV s showed guests how a colonoscopy was preformed and offered advice on screening and bowel preparation (Rafferty, 2016). The stoma therapists were on hand to offer specialist advice to ostomates, whilst also educating the public with the help of visual aids, models and supplies. It was a great step forward and a pleasure to have members of the newly formed Saudi Ostomy Association openly talking about their experiences with their ostomy and answering questions from the public (Rafferty, 2016). Many of our past and present ostomates attended, providing the opportunity to engage with other ostomates. Awareness of defaecatory disorders including faecal incontinence and obstructive defecation was also promoted generating a great interest from guests (Rafferty, 2016). Last but not least a WCET NNGF booth was there, promoting our profession and history to our colleagues, young Saudi nurses and members of the public. This was important, as currently there are only 14 known certified ET s in Saudi Arabia, for a population of almost 30 million people (Hibbert & Al-Dossari, 2015). The day was a great success with over 550 patients, staff, ostomates and members of the public attending. Mickey Mouse made a guest appearance for the children and showed off his ostomy, he helped oversee the signing of a large poster, showing support for all ostomates (Rafferty, 2016). 26 The AASTN Australia Prepared by Carmen George, Clinical Nurse Consultant Stomal Therapy Nursing / Wound Management, Melbourne The Australian Association of Stomal Therapy Nurses (AASTN) came into being in Since then it has gone from strength to strength. Underpinning the success of our organisation is our constitution, our code of ethics, our standards of practice, our Journal of Stomal Therapy Nursing Australia (JSTN), our continuing professional development (CPD) process, our credentialing process and our regular conferences plus the ongoing commitment of our individual members. Currently we have nearly 600 members. Our executive comes from all over Australia; the role of our executive is to ensure the smooth running of our organisation and to be the spokespersons for all matters relating to our nursing specialty. The biggest issue in Australia affecting our nursing specialty at the moment is the government review of the Stoma Appliance Scheme. Both our executive and individual members are working to ensure that benefits to our patients are not compromised. Last year at our biennial conference 3 of our members were honoured with life membership. The 3 members awarded this honour where Elizabeth English from Adelaide, South Australia; Keryln Carville from Perth in Western Australia and Patricia Walls from Brisbane Queensland. From left to right: Keryln Carville, Elizabeth English and Patricia Walls receiving their awards. Most WCET members are familiar with Elizabeth English who spent a long and distinguished time on the executive board of the WCET where she held positions as Education Chairperson, Vice President and President. She is still a current member of the WCET education committee. During her time on the WCET executive board she over saw the establishment of the first ETNEP program in China. Now Elizabeth is busy establishing and directing the first East African ETNEP in Nairobi Kenya. In addition to her major contribution to stomal therapy nursing worldwide Elizabeth has had a long association with our Australian Association and has been recognised locally, nationally and internationally. In 2012 she was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) medal for services to nursing, particularly in the field of stomal therapy clinical practice and education, and through executive roles with national BullETin January

27 and international associations. The AASTN has now awarded her the honour of life time membership which is in recognition of conspicuous contribution to, and eminence in, the field of Stomal Therapy Nursing. Pat Walls from Brisbane was also awarded our life time membership honours for her conspicuous contribution to and eminence in our specialty. Pat completed her training as an STN in 1982 and followed this up with further studies and qualifications in wound management. Pat has worked as a Clinical Nurse Consultant in Stomal Therapy/ Wound Care at the Holy Spirit hospital in Brisbane since Over the past almost 30 years she has always been ready to assist nurses with her immense knowledge in the field of stomal therapy/wound care. Pat has been a preceptor to many STN trainees as well as teaching in the stomal therapy programs when run in Queensland. Pat has had 13 papers published and presented 28 papers at national and international conferences. She has been a long time member of the WCET and travelled to many WCET congresses. Pat has always been a very active member of the AASTN, regularly participating in branch meetings and promoting the specialty avidly. She has held many organisational positions including Vice President of the AASTN National executive from She has also held the position of Queensland branch State President & Vice President plus been a state representative to the national executive and a member of the AASTN conference organising committee member of 1999 conference. This life time honour is well deserved and reflects the respect of colleagues for her commitment and contribution to our nursing specialty. Professor Keryln Carville is well known both in Australia and worldwide. She qualified in Stomal Therapy nursing in 1974 and proudly puts STN behind her name in addition to PhD. Keryln has been inspirational and a mentor and role model for many stomal therapy nurses across Australia. Keryln is currently Professor of Primary Health Care and Community Nursing at the Silver Chain Nursing Association and Curtin University School of Nursing, Midwifery and Para-medicine in WA. Keryln has an expansive clinical practice in wound and ostomy management and has a commitment to research and education within these domains. A recognised and inspirational Clinical Leader in wound management in Australia and the Asia/Pacific region, she has delivered key note addresses nationally and internationally. In addition, she has travelled extensively to teach others about ST nursing, notably in China where they now have over 1000 STNs in 15 years, Iran, Malaysia, Indonesia, Tanzania, Kenya and Singapore (and possibly others she is very hard to keep up with!) Keryln is rarely at home, and when you look at the list of her additional involvements, it is no wonder. Besides her full time job she is: Founding and Life Member of the WA Wound Care Association Chair of the Wounds West Education Committee Inaugural Fellow of Australian Wound Management Association (AWMA) (2006) Chair of the AWMA Australian Wound Standards Committee Chair of the Australian Pressure Injury Advisory Panel Member of the AWMA Venous Leg Ulcer Committee Past editor of the JSTA (twice) Chair Pan Pacific Pressure Injury Alliance Chair of the Evidence Committee International Wound Infection Institute As well as all the above, Keryln now sits on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Stomal Therapy Australia, Journal of Wound Practice and Research and the Journal of the Australian Council of Community Nurses. It is no wonder that the AASTN has awarded her too the honour of Life Membership in recognition of her conspicuous contribution to, and eminence in, the field of Stomal Therapy Nursing. 28 20 years of Stomatherapy in Belgium Françoise Fievet, ET Nurse, CHU Brussels, Belgium On May 17, the Belgium French speaking association celebrated the 20th anniversary of the first Belgium ET training. On this occasion, a scientific event was organized in order to recall the evolution of the Stomatherapy in Belgium, and its importance for ostomy patients. The future of Stomatherapy and the one of patients with a stoma were also discussed. The specific professional title of specialized nurse in stomatherapy and wound care is not yet recognized in Belgium. A focus about this perspective was presented to us as well as the educational aspect of advanced practice. The end of the presentations took place in a good atmosphere, with projection of old pictures and evocation of funny memories of this first training which was followed by many others since then. Today there are 141 ETs in Belgium, and we are still proud to say we were the first twelve ones in The hundred participants warmly applauded Brigitte Crispin and Marie-Magdeleine Lefort, pioneers of this formation recognized by the WCET. Thanks, flowers and gifts were followed by a tasty cocktail. All the laboratories who support this training since the beginning of the adventure were present. It was the moment to thank them too. The World Union Wound Healing Congress is the biggest forum for research, evidence based practice and consensus document for wound care professionals around the world. The WUWHS was founded in Australia in 2000, the vision and mission of the union includes various guiding statements: Firstly, to improve wound care standards for patients, improve healthcare professional performances and facilitate universal access in all health care systems. Secondly, to educate all health care professionals in interdisciplinary team approaches that deliver best practice for improved patient outcomes, and to disseminate the educational and training toolkits created in practical, relevant and adaptable formats to meet local needs. Thirdly, to appraise and organize the database in order to facilitate best practice and optimize patient care. To accomplish this mission requires either large-scale randomized clinical trials or multi-centered prospective database accumulation efforts. Finally, and most importantly, the mission of the WUWHS is to co-ordinate a world-wide exchange of information between wound societies and other relevant bodies, including international and global agencies - as well as promoting personal-level friendship exchanges. Abu Dhabi is a leading healthcare provider in the region. The wound care professional team in the emirate has changed the landscape of wound healing with advanced wound care education. Seven conferences and four advanced wound care courses have been done so far in the emirate. These activities have put Abu Dhabi in the top notch of this profession.
