BECAUSE OF YOU! The Janeway Children s Health & Rehabilitation Centre The Janeway Children s Health and Rehabilitation Centre s medical team has been providing the best medical care possible to children of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) for more than 50 years. Each year, there are approximately 120,000 patient visits at the Janeway Hospital. In a world where medical technologies and treatment protocols are ever-changing, your gifts allow us to stay current, and help introduce new initiatives, all to enhance and keep pace with the advancements in pediatric care. The Janeway Children s Hospital Foundation is a registered charitable organization created to raise funds to meet the financial needs of the Janeway Children s Health and Rehabilitation Centre for capital projects, medical equipment and research and programs directly related to the health and welfare of NL children, while promoting awareness of these needs. 3 Thank You On behalf of the Janeway Children s Hospital Foundation, Board of Directors, and Janeway staff, thank you for your commitment to child health care in Newfoundland and Labrador. From the latest innovations in medical equipment to life-saving research, continued staff education and vital pediatric programs, your donations help provide an exceptional health care environment for our children. Last year, your donations were used to support: $1,140,000 in medical equipment, $150,000 in research and learning, and $200,000 in programming, staff education and other pediatric initiatives. In our mission to augment government funding for the Janeway Hospital, the Foundation continues to explore initiatives to ensure that these supplementary funds will be available today and well into the future. None of this, however, would be possible without the support of you, our community and corporate donors. Your partnerships continue to enrich the delivery of medical care for our children, going above and beyond what would be accomplished with government funding alone. Thank you, again, for enabling the Janeway to reach new heights in child health care in our province. Sincerely, JANEWAY PATIENT AILISH Age 9 Years Old Condition Medulloblastoma (Brain Tumour) Date of Diagnosis March 25, 2014 Treated With 31 Radiation Treatments and 6 Rounds of Chemotherapy Annual Visits 4 every three months Number of Departments Visited 15 Number of Surgeries 4 Number of Admissions 10 LLOYD POWELL Chair Janeway Children s Hospital Foundation
JANEWAY BECAUSE 2013 OF YOU! IMPACT REPORT How You Make a Difference Equipment Through donor gifts, the Janeway Foundation continues to provide our medical team with the necessary equipment to improve the positive outcomes in the health care of our province s children. We all know that children are not just small adults. The importance of specialized treatment is seen daily, ensuring best care, patient safety and in many cases, shorter recovery times. The Janeway cares for children from birth to the age of 18 from the 1 lb. preemie to the 150 lb. teenager. These children require specialized medical treatment and care using modern technologies such as the Draeger Babylog VN500 (ventilator) and the Telepsychiatry Technology Mobile Unit. Thanks to you, such state-of-the-art equipment are being utilized to save and improve children s lives now at the Janeway. Specialized Equipment Purchased Sleeper Chairs Bladder Scanner Portable BP Machine with Sat monitor Infusion Pumps Electric Cribs Medical Day Care Bed PACs Station The Draeger Babylog ventilator has the newest technology available. First, it supports breathing by non-invasive oscillation, which means the patient is getting the most advanced level of support with no tube in their lungs. Next, as with other ventilators, it breathes for the baby when they are not mature or strong enough to do it themselves. However, this model has the ability to synchronize with the baby s breathing to provide gentle and better ventilation as it coordinates with the breathes the baby takes. This synchronization helps the baby to build up the strength and ability to breathe on their own sooner. By getting the baby off the machine sooner, they can develop fewer complications from being on the machine and ultimately get home faster. Furthermore, this ventilator delivers four different levels of breathing support without any interruption in respirations. Consequently, the medical staff doesn t have to change machines and therefore there are no periods where the patient is not receiving support. Having the most advanced equipment available makes a big difference in the lives of our babies and their families. Neonatal ventilator - Neonatal ventilator recognizes changing conditions in a baby s lungs and adjusts itself accordingly.
JANEWAY BECAUSE 2013 OF YOU! IMPACT REPORT How You Make a Difference Equipment Another newly acquired state-of-the-art piece of equipment is the Telepsychiatry Technology Mobile Unit to be utilized as part of the Outpatient Child/Adolescent psychiatry program. The unit is a portable, computerized system that allows Janeway medical staff to connect with patients all over Newfoundland and Labrador. The Janeway currently implements telehealth technology for emergency and scheduled assessments, as well as follow-up appointments. Actually, the Outpatient Child/ Adolescent psychiatry program is responsible for more telehealth appointments than any other part of our mental health and addictions programs, consequently the demand for a new unit has increased. Therefore, this modern practice can provide cost and time savings to families throughout NL. To employ this unit, the patient goes to the site in their community and Janeway staff connect with them. Most recently we used it to support a young client and her counsellor working through a therapeutic approach. The counsellor is now prepared to offer this therapy to others and we will continue to support through telehealth. Thanks to this portable unit our staff can travel through the province caring for all our children. Gavin Carroll was born three months early and was monitored 24 hours a day in NICU. The staff at the NICU are truly amazing! The times that we could not be there with our son, we felt completely comfortable leaving him as we knew they would treat him as their own. We became very close with many of the staff and they became like a second family to us when our family couldn t be there. The doctors, nurses, respiratory technicians, etc. at the Janeway NICU are highly qualified staff with exceptional skills who can keep their calm even when the situation is intense. We both feel that Gavin received the best care at the Janeway NICU and we are very thankful for that. GAVIN S DAD AND MOM, SCOTT AND ROBYN
BECAUSE OF YOU! Education Through the generosity of our donors, the Janeway Foundation invests in the continued education and training of our health care professionals. There are always new developments in medicine to help advance clinical practices; education is essential to ensure our staff have access to the most up-to-date pediatric medical information and techniques when they need it most. The Foundation, through the community s support, provides $100,000 annually to fund educational opportunities for medical professionals who care for the province s pediatric population in areas such as cardiology, high risk obstetrics, s, diagnostic imaging, and neonatal intensive care. This past year, Janeway s NICU nurses attended the National Neonatal Nurses Conference where they learned about disease processes, treatments, research and other relevant topics that are pertinent to everyday clinical practices. NICU nurses attended the National Neonatal Nurses Conference. Other Education Bursaries were Awarded in: Maintaining clinical competency and knowledge of best practices enables me to provide the necessary education across the province, act as the provincial consultant as well as write policies and practice guidelines based on best evidence and current practice recommendations. Thank you for this learning opportunity. SUSAN WHITE, BN RN, NEONATAL EDUCATOR Research At any given time, the Janeway has 50 active research projects underway that will impact children who suffer from various childhood illnesses and af lictions. The Janeway, in af iliation with Memorial University, serves as a primary clinical resource for vital pediatric medical research. Without funding for ongoing medical research, advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury would not be possible. In fact, the Janeway Pediatric Research Unit will serve the needs of children throughout Newfoundland and Labrador well into the future, enhancing and expanding clinical research through current and future clinical trials, clinical studies, and health service initiatives. Such critical research has the potential to have long-term and positive impact on children and their families. Occupational Therapy Physiotherapy PICU Child Development and Learning Public Health Lifestyles Radiology Audiology Mental Health and Addiction
BECAUSE OF YOU! Child Health Programs When children and their families are dealing with very serious issues that affect their well-being and mental health, they can spend extended periods of time at the Janeway. Through donor support, our medical team is able to provide programs in areas such as lifestyle, mental health, and development and rehabilitation. Janeway specialized programming helps our young patients nts ie, makes pist, Trix a r e h t n io, Morgan e recreat y patient a Child Lif w e n a J h crafts wit throughout, what could be, the most dif icult and challenging times in their lives. ives. It is an essential step in preparing children for the future so they can develop p to their full potential. One such program funded by the Janeway Foundation is music therapy, the clinical use of music to promote, maintain, and restore mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health and well-being. Susan LeMessurier Quinn is a music therapist who is trained to work with young patients to develop a musical and therapeutic relationship through improvisation, instrumental play, song-writing, vocalization, movement to music, music listening, and lyric analysis. When she irst met Graysen, kly he was experiencing respiratory distress and an elevated heart rate. It quickly became clear to her that he was very engaged by the lute. For 30 minutes, she he played a steady melody, initially matching Graysen s heart rate and breath. She he then gradually slowed the tempo to help him relax. His heart rate actually decreased as the musical tempo decreased! As a result, Graysen did not require uire medication to reduce his elevated heart rate. Graysen has come a long way from rom PICU and is now an outpatient of the music therapy program. Music can be placed in a variety of categories. For some, it s simply music. For others, it s an escape, a place to go after a long, hard day. But for my family, music is so much more!! For my son Graysen, music is his voice a voice that I d been waiting so long to hear. I m so grateful for Susan and so glad she was able to unlock this treasure. GRAYSEN S MOM, ALICE Music t herapis t, Susan plays fl LeMess ute to J urier Qu aneway inn, patient Grayse n
because of you! As the only pediatric hospital in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Janeway is an integral part of our province, providing care for all our children. Each day more than 300 seriously ill and injured children and their families walk through the doors of the Janeway expecting the best care possible. We are inspired by their courage and determination to be well and it is this fortitude that drives our Janeway medical team to ensure they receive the care they need and deserve. You have helped to fund the tools necessary to provide this care. Thank you!
