Last year Medical Center Hospital cared for 53,807 patients in our Emergency Department and saw a significant increase in industrial and auto accidents. In we raised the bar in emergency care when MCH was designated by the American College of Surgeons as the Permian Basin s only Level II Trauma Center. This means we re ready to handle most any emergency. To meet the current and future healthcare needs of our fast-growing community, MCHS is increasing access to healthcare by constructing new primary care clinics strategically located throughout the greater Odessa area. In, we broke ground on two new primary care centers: the MCH Center for Primary Care- West University, located on the corner of West University and FM 1936 and the MCH Center for Primary Care JBS Parkway, located on JBS Parkway, south of Nimitz Junior High. These two clinics are scheduled to open in fall 2014 and will join the two existing Urgent Care clinics, two Clinics at Walmart, and the Family Health Clinic. This summer, the new Veterans Affairs Permian Basin Community Based Outpatient Clinic will open at the MCH Center for Health & Wellness campus at Highway 191 and Faudree Road. Serving over 8,000 military veterans in the Permian Basin, the center will include primary care and mental health along with a pharmacy, eye clinic, audiology center and physical therapy services. Clinic specialists will also provide assistance with nutrition, prosthesis and homebased primary care services. MCHS is also focused on improving the community s health and access to healthcare through our Community Health programs. Led by Community Health nurse navigators, the Community Health programs are focused on connecting the community with high-quality healthcare. The navigators provide advocacy, education and support to help individuals make informed decisions and gain self-management skills toward healthier lifestyles. The forecast shows even more growth in the Permian Basin over the next decade. You can count on Medical Center Health System to be prepared to meet the increased healthcare needs by providing the resources necessary to provide high quality care. 9 Elevating Healthcare in our Community Medical Center Health System is proud to announce three new programs that we implemented in : Community Health, A Tu Salud and Palliative Care. Through these programs we are better able to connect our community with healthcare. These have been created to meet the needs identified in the Ector County Community Health Needs Assessment that MCHS completed in August. The assessment identified a need for a more connected community-based model of care. There is also a need to focus on prevention and education in key areas such as diabetes, COPD, and asthma. Community Health Navigators The MCHS Community Health programs started in to improve our community s health and provide access to healthcare. Led by Community Health nurse navigators, the programs provide advocacy, education, and support to help individuals make informed decisions and gain self-management skills in the community setting. We know that many members of the community are most comfortable at home, so the navigators strive to promote health and wellness in the community to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations. A major aspect of Community Health is the Faith & Health Network. This is a partnership between Odessa congregations, the hospital and our community. The Faith & Health Network works with congregations to educate and provide a supportive network to help navigate the health system. 16 I m They were 17 Playing My Best A Tu Salud Game Ever. Mike Emmerson MCH Cardiac Patient Palliative Care Nancy Rangel Cancer Survivor my saving grace. A Tu Salud - To Your Health is a unique program for the Hispanic community offering Spanish and bilingual presentations. Participants are encouraged to come learn from healthcare professionals in a fun, interactive, and educational setting. Topics include heart health, diabetes, and cancer awareness. A Tu Salud hosts monthly educational programs for the Hispanic Community on the third Tuesday of each month, 5:30 p.m. at Salinas Community Center, 600 West Clements in Odessa. In, Medical Center Health System implemented the Palliative Care program which is designed to improve quality of life for both the seriously ill and their family. Our Palliative Care program focuses on relieving pain, suffering and symptoms. However, unlike hospice care, palliative medicine does not require patients to give up curative or life prolonging treatments. Nationwide, 90 million Americans who suffer from conditions such as cancer, heart disease, Parkinson s disease, AIDS, and Alzheimer s disease can benefit from a palliative medicine program. Yet, only about one million patients and their families are served by these programs each year. That s why we have a dedicated Palliative Care program at Medical Center, to make sure patients have this option nearby when they need it. A TU SALUD MCHODESSA.COM COMMUNITY HEALTH / PALLIATIVE CARE

11 Serving Those Who Protect Our Freedom This summer, the new Veterans Affairs Permian Basin Community Based Outpatient Clinic, will open at the MCH Center for Health & Wellness campus. Medical Center Health System has partnered with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) since 1974 to implement a number of residency programs including Family Practice, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Internal Medicine along with fellowship programs including Geriatric Medicine and Hospitalist. MCHS has also worked with TTUHSC Third and Fourth Year Medical Students since the program was implemented in The new regional health center, developed in collaboration with the Veterans Affairs Administration, will be solely dedicated to meeting the medical needs of more than 8,000 military veterans who call the Permian Basin home. The new center will feature four Program of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) Teams to help manage patient care. PACT uses a comprehensive community-based team approach to providing care and treatment. Each team will be led by Thanks to a generous contribution from a grateful patient, MCHS renovated space on the second floor of Medical Center Hospital to create The Bunkhouse, a place for TTUHSC students and residents to socialize, take a break from schedules, complete paperwork and study. MCHS also renovated space on Medical Center Hospital s seventh floor in for the new Louise and Clay Wood Simulation Center. TTUHSC residents and nursing students as well as MCHS employees are using this Simulation Center. In January 2014, MCHS opened the Dedicated Teaching Unit on the seventh floor of Medical Center Hospital. AFFILIATIONS Louise and Clay Wood with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Students a physician and will include a nurse, pharmacist, social worker and health technician. The outpatient center will feature a full-service eye clinic, an audiology center and physical therapy, as well as nutrition, prosthetics and home-based primary care services. The clinic will also provide tele-health services, which uses video conferencing to provide physician and specialist consultations to veterans living in outlying areas. There are many heroes living in the Permian Basin, and soon our community will have a way to thank them for protecting our freedoms we enjoy here at home. 12 Providing Healthcare to a Growing Community Odessa is currently one of the fastest growing cities in the country. With the Permian Basin seeing rapid population growth, the need for accessible healthcare is also growing. To meet the current and future healthcare needs of our fast-growing community, Medical Center Health System has developed a plan to increase access to healthcare by constructing two primary care clinics strategically located throughout our community. Our current clinics include the two Clinics at Walmart located in East and West Odessa, two Urgent Care Clinics located at the Center for Health & Wellness on Faudree and Highway and adjacent to the MCH campus and the Family Health Clinic at Clements. Now, we are proud to announce that we have two new primary care centers currently under development: the MCH Center for Primary Care West University and the MCH Center for Primary Care JBS Parkway. The Center for Primary Care West University, which is scheduled to open in Summer 2014, will be a multipurpose facility located at the corner of FM 1936 and West University. The clinic will include a Family Health Clinic similar to the clinic located on Clements and will provide a primary medical home for a broad range of patients. The location of the clinic is important, as 30 percent of Ector County Independent School District s elementary school-aged children live west of Loop 338, where there are currently no medical services. The clinic will include physicians and mid-level providers specializing in Pediatrics, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Endocrinology and Optometry. MCHS will also open Urgent Care West at this location to care for minor injuries and illnesses seven days a week. The clinic will accept most insurances, Medicare and Medicaid and will provide a sliding scale for uninsured patients. MCHS is also planning to open the Center for Primary Care JBS Parkway in the Fall of This clinic will include the MCH ProCare Healthy Kids Clinic, a Family Practice suite and Urgent Care JBS. The MCH ProCare Healthy Kids Clinic will be a core component of the Healthy Kids Program that MCHS is developing to address and improve the health of children in our community. The Healthy Kids Clinic will be comprised of two to three pediatricians along with mid-level provider support. Urgent Care JBS will be our fourth Urgent Care location in Ector County and will be open to provide care for minor injuries and illnesses seven days a week. With five existing clinics and two new primary care clinics on the horizon, we re not only improving access to care with convenient locations, we re working to improve the health of Ector County families.
