1 August 2014 India: Increase in Trademark Official Filing Fees Page 3 Enhancing ICANN Accountability and Governance - Process and Next Steps Page 3 Where & When to Meet AGIP Team Page 4 Under the Patronage and Attendance of HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to Organize A Workshop on Domain Name System Security AMMAN - The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is organizing a workshop on Domain Name System Security (DNSSEC) hosted by the Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum / Talal Abu-Ghazaleh University September 8-11, 2014 under the patronage and attendance of HE Dr. Talal Abu- Ghazaleh. The workshop will focus on the protection of the DNS databases, protection of processes during transmission and reception, protection from electronic attacks on the DNS, safe Internet protocols and uses thereof, signature, encryption and other requirements for a safe communication environment between the users and servers. The workshop also includes theoretical training and practical applications, as well as a visit to the National Information Technology Center in Jordan. Mr. Charles Shaban, Executive Director of Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property, explained that the workshop will enable participants to establish Domain name systems in their organizations and countries safe. Specialists from ICANN and participants from various key entities including information database engineers and administrators from Internet service providers (ISPs) and 1

2 Domain names registries, as well as Domain names registrars from the following countries: Jordan, UAE, Egypt, Bahrain, Kuwait, Morocco, Yemen, Tunisia and Pakistan will take part in the event. It is worth mentioning that ICANN is a non-profit organization established in ICANN staff operates the Internet domain name system and coordinate the distribution and assignment of Internet unique identifiers such as IP addresses. They are also responsible for accrediting generic top-level domain names (gtld) registrars. ICANN also helps express the views of volunteers from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable, while promoting competition in the area of domain names and helping in the development of Internet policies. ICANN has three main offices around the world (Los Angeles, Istanbul and Singapore), as well as several liaison offices in major cities and capitals; with more than (300) employees worldwide. Libyan Trademark Office Update TRIPOLI As a result of the latest unrest in Libya, the Libyan Trademark Office suspended its operations. 3 India: Increase in Trademark Official Filing Fees NEW DELHI The Office of Controller General Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, issued a public notice on August 7, 2014 related to increase in fees for filing a trademark application. The public notice states that the fees for filing an application to register a trademark for a specification of goods or services included in one class has been increased from Rs to Rs , and the fees for expedite examination has been increased to respectively. This decision is effective as from the publication date at the Official Gazette, August 1, Enhancing ICANN Accountability and Governance - Process and Next Steps ICANN published Enhancing ICANN Accountability and Governance - Process and Next Steps, a document that describes the process to examine how, from an organizational perspective, ICANN s accountability mechanisms should be strengthened to address the absence of its historical relationship with the US Government including looking at strengthening existing accountability mechanisms, a press release by ICANN. On 14 March 2014, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced its intention to transition its stewardship of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority to the global stakeholder community, which would end its contractual relationship with ICANN that has existed since That historical relationship has been perceived as a backstop with regard to ICANN s organization-wide accountability. Last spring, when the community began its initial discussions on the task of transitioning NTIA s stewardship of the IANA Functions, the community raised the broader topic of the impact of the change on ICANN s accountability. What emerged was a commitment to launch a second process parallel but interrelated with the IANA stewardship transition process to do this work. During an extended public comment period from the beginning of May to the end of June, we received 49 comments, with a majority discussing the more substantive aspects of accountability, while some focused on the design of the review process itself. An important attribute of the IANA Stewardship Transition process and this ICANN Accountability & Governance Review process is that the work of each completes in time to meet the expectations of the IANA Functions Contract ending in September

5 Publications Second Updated Version of TAG-ICT Dictionary Issued Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAG-Org) has issued the second updated version of TAG-ICT Dictionary after updating its input and inserting a new set of terms used in daily life due to the fact that past months witnessed the launch of a large number of concepts, terms, technologies, application and protocols of communication. HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, TAG-Org chairman, said in the dictionary introduction that ICT plays a significant role in our life and helps our society change into a Knowledge one. He added that the contribution value of individuals or groups is measured based on the contributions produced by thought and innovation. For example, it has been easy and necessary to teach the new generation throughout all stages using electronic means, and business, banking and government administration. Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh reiterated his intention to continue updating and developing the dictionaries issued by TAG-Org which are, in addition to TAG-ICT Dictionary: Talal Dictionary, TAG Dictionary of Legal Terms, TAG Accountancy and Business Dictionary, Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Dictionary of Patents and Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Collocations Dictionary. He also explained that these publications aim at enriching the Arabic language references and contribute to knowledge dissemination amongst students and all business sectors through specialized scientific and professional publications. 5
