1 PRESS RELEASE Brussels, 11 June 2015 Job vacancies in paid employment in Belgium in 2014 In 2014, there were 83,010 job vacancies and 3,645,420 occupied posts in Belgian enterprises according to Eurostat definitions. This means that 2.23% of jobs in paid employment were vacant (see table 1). This information is derived from the ly Job Vacancy Survey (also called 'JVS' or 'Job Vacancy Statistics'). Since 2012, 11,000 enterprises have completed on average the online questionnaire on the number of occupied posts and job vacancies by status (fixed or temporary) and region. Two new features have been introduced compared to 2013: 1) economic O (public administration and defence; compulsory social security), P (education) and Q (human health and social work ) have been added (1,349,180 additional posts, of which 20,880 are vacant); 2) the ly data are now estimated by region. Compared to the results of 2013 (excluding sectors O, P and Q), the survey indicates a stagnation in the number of job vacancies (61,620 in 2013 and 62,130 in 2014) and in the job vacancy rate (2.58% in 2013 and 2.61% in 2014) (see table 1). However, the ly data show a significant decrease in the number of job vacancies (-0.7%) at the end of the year (from 59,690 to 55,710 between the fourth s of 2013 and 2014, see table 2). Even though it was limited to a number of sectors (trade, construction, manufacturing and business support service ), the National Bank of Belgium's business survey among enterprises also shows that the business environment was gradually declining at the end of 2014 (see Moreover, most of the job vacancies in 2014 were concentrated in a number of sectors: 80.9% of these vacancies were in trade (G-I), construction (F), industry (B-E), non-market services (O-Q), scientific and administrative service (M-N) (see chart 1). However, the sectors that most often require technical skills had the highest job vacancy rates: 3.9% in scientific and administrative service (M-N) and 4.14% in information and communication (J) (see table 1). The majority of these job vacancies were recorded in the Flemish Region (61.2% of job vacancies, see chart 2). The Brussels-Capital Region and the Flemish Region had the highest job vacancy rates: 2.45% in the Brussels- Capital Region and 2.27% in the Flemish Region, compared to 2.00% in the Walloon Region. A higher job vacancy rate for the Walloon Region was only registered for industry (B-E): 2.46% for the Walloon Region compared to 1.97% for the Flemish Region and 1.51% for the Brussels- Capital Region (see table 3).
2 2/6 Finally, these job vacancies were often aimed at temporary workers: 14.6% of the job vacancies in However, this share increased to 19.3% if the jobs in non-market sectors (O-Q) are excluded from the analysis (see chart 3). They even represented 34.6% of job vacancies in industry (B-E), 17.4% in scientific and administrative service (M-N) and 17.1% in trade, transportation and accommodation and food service (G-I) (see table 1). Temporary employment also had the highest job vacancy rate (12.8% in 2014) especially due to the legally limited duration of the activity.
