Any questions about what the Coalition is and how to be part of it? PJ: Been around for about 2.5 years. Pia V and Casey W were two of the original Chairs. Came out of need. It s been a wonderful opportunity for orgs to get together and discuss what s available and what vets need. PJ: I still remember when Jonathan got frustrated about veterans getting housed in empty homes and created the furniture bank. That was amazing. It s neat how the coalition can provide guidance and ideas. JL: Talked a bit. PJ: Brian s here from Caldwell county (Lockhart and Lulling), and those veterans don t have access to all our resources cause they don t reach that far. Sometimes it s just a matter of a grant recipient including a county in a grant. This is an opportunity to help a neighboring county. It s another thing that the coalition can do. BH: I have 178 members at my post. (Not including their spouses and children). As post commander, I m looking for things I can bring back to my post. I have a 78-year-old member who s about to lose his house to Medicaid. BH: Here s where I start. Action Items Old Business * Discuss issues and concerns * (Note: This was largely contained in New Business. - JAL) New Business * CTVSC Assessment * PV: We did an assessment three years ago. We should reassess what we want to do. I want to see CTVSC members help the veteran community. We had the Furniture Bank. We had the job fair. I d like to see the CTVSC get out there more. I want to see us give to the community. I d like to see us do an assessment. What do you see the CTVSC doing in 5 years? What can we do to make an impact? What s a project we - as members - can help out with. SS: Like helping VFWs. PV: American Legion Post has the Winter Program Project - American Legion, VFW, Texas Center Point, SamCtr, UT, St. Edwards. Asking for 500 homeless kits consisting of grooming essentials. CTVSC can help with this project. There s a donation letter available. JMcQ: Radio? PV: Yeah. SS: Want to help? Call/ us at TxCtrPt and we ll pick it up! PV: I ll send the flyers and letters to Jonathan for the notes. CW: Timeframe? PV: October. 4 of 8
5 * BB: I m very glad I m here and looking to shift to a nonprofit focus. I have a lot of ideas and have done a lot of planning (higher ed for 24 years). Have you had a golf tournament? JL: We can t do that yet, as we re not a nonprofit. It s a tricky proposition, as some members who are involved with the state are prohibited from participating in fundraising. Perhaps we need to revisit it? BB: I love bringing people together. * BB: So how do I sign up? PV: Where is the CTVSC going? Do we want to stay loosely formed, create a non-profit? From an outside entity - a non-profit arm of the coalition? * JL - note to self - ORGANIZE A CO-CHAIR MEETING * Megan K-B: We can organize a benefit for something that isn t us and channel that money to a different entity. We all have jobs - we re not looking for new jobs. Rush E: We were doing free legal aid to folks in jails (discharge upgrades, divorce, etc.). * Andrew Miller: Perhaps a non-profit can cover the event? RW: It would be a third-party hosted event. The entity would be acting on behalf of the organization. * New CTVSC Project Idea Brainstorm * SS: We do need some focus. Perhaps we can help focus on your VFW, and local VFWs in general. * PJ: Easter Seals - connecting with them would be awesome.?v: Yes! We re looking for a place for veterans to comfortably gather and share. We re taking the services to the community and utilize the resources in their area. I ll talk to Christopher about it. BH: Yeah, it s kind of a neutral ground. We tend to be kind of insular, but we do act as a central point for resources for our group. I can facilitate access to other VFWs. * Jennifer C: There s a template you can create. When one person shows up from a rural area and you start asking how to identify resources and how you reach out to people in these other communities. You may know other local VFW reps; help us reach out to them to find and develop these resource. Local churches may be an untapped resource. Not creating something out of nothing, but seeing where they can connect. BH: I m also the District 5 chaplain, so I have access to a broader number of counties than a typical VFW Commander. * Rush E: The VFW has two conventions every tear. One in Austin and one in Houston/Dallas. TexVet and TVLP are there every time to do outreach - especially with rural Texas. There s only about 15 orgs with a table at that event; if you want to send materials for your groups to me or Jonathan BH: We re having a district meeting coming up. If you let me know, I can distribute for you. We also have officer training in July at the hotel just down the street. * JL - note to self - TEXVET COUNTY PAGES FRANCHISE THE COALITION FORMAT? * PJ: Specific veteran needs? BH: Biggest one now is job services. Rural areas are financially strapped; limited tax base - and a lot of those folks don t have a way out. Also educational benefits; uplift themselves out. Legal services is a huge one. Furniture is also a big thing. PJ: Can you do a legal clinic out there? RE: Probably, yeah. I ll talk to our managing attorney. * JL - note to self - ADVISE BH TO APPLY FOR A GRANT FOR NEEDED SERVICES TO THE TVC. * New Co-Chairs * SS: We re always looking for new co-chairs. If you want to be a co-chair, step up! We re happy to help you get up to speed! * PV: Who s current? SS: Jennifer, April, and Me! * PJ: How many do you need? SS: Two. JL: And more make it easier. * What s it entail? SS: Bring people together. Find spotlights. * B Ford and Wade Waller both volunteered. 5 of 8
6 * 30-minute pre-meetings for Co-Chairs * SS: We d like to start meeting 30 minutes prior to each meeting; make sure we re on the same page. JL :Do we have this room for the 30 minutes before the CTVSC meeting? JC: I ll check. Upcoming events CW: Keys to Progress - Progressive. Need a car? Taking applications for Recycled Rides. Travis and adjacent counties. Contact Casey. Want applications in tomorrow; we re going to extend that deadline. PUSH THIS INFO OUT Sept 20 - American Legion Job Fair in Austin. 60 employers. Success Stories PJ: Mr. Ford is a success story in the making because he s someone we d like Veterans to be more like; he s educated himself on the community resources What are you looking for? xf: I want to connect people with one thing to another, like Kimberli Spate. Help people find job; that s of paramount importance. 6 of 8
7 PJ: He s a super-passionate guy. He s a real asset to organizations. The success come from how he s doing everything right. He s not just waiting for things to happen. He s a real inspiration. He s out there looking for opportunities and making them happen. Megan K-B: Systemic success. I ve ben connecting incarcerated veterans to resources, including monthly brining in art and/or the VA. For the first time ever, we re about to get an incarcerated veteran transported to the VA for assistance. That s a big accomplishment. I call that progress. September Chair April Sullivan will chair the next meeting. Wrap-Up The formal part of the meeting ended at 3:43 PM.
