1 Call to Present PASS and Peer Learning Symposium Building Inclusive Communities Sydney, 26 th November, 2018 Submission Deadline Extended to Friday 7 September The Organising Committee invites submissions for the PASS and Peer Learning Symposium held in Sydney on the 26 th November The theme of the symposium is: Building Inclusive Communities We invite you to share your approaches and strategies to support belonging and interaction between students and student leaders. To assist you we have listed a number of sub-themes: Widening participation through technology Staff and Student Partnerships Student led strategies Innovative approaches towards recruiting and training student leaders and mentors The Organising committee is accepting submissions that showcase a range of academic peer learning initiatives or academic mentoring programs that highlight innovative ideas or exemplify best practice. Submissions that provide the opportunity for collaboration between staff and Peer Educators/Leaders are encouraged. 2 Refereed Papers: Refereed papers should have a strong empirical or theoretical foundation and present new knowledge or findings, or report on the application of existing knowledge to a new domain. Presentation length: 40mins Submission Process: Full papers are required at the time of submission. Refereed papers will be double blind peer reviewed to meet DEEWR E1 requirements. Refereed papers accepted for the PASS and Peer Learning Symposium will comply with the DEEWR definition of research and will be categorised as E1 publications. That is, each accepted refereed paper will be: A substantial scholarly activity, as evidenced by discussion of relevant literature, as awareness of history and antecedents of the work described, and are provided in a format which allows a reader to trace sources of the work through citations Original (that is, more than merely a compilation of existing works) A contribution to knowledge In a form that enables dissemination of knowledge To submit a refereed paper, please provide a proposal with the following to pass-nationalcentre@uow.edu.au by the submission deadline: Completed cover letter (pg7) An original copy of the refereed paper A blind copy of the refereed paper for review purposes Refereed papers should not exceed 10 pages including title, author details, abstract, body and references Selected papers may be published online and may be invited to submit paper in the Journal of Peer Learning Refereed papers will be assessed for inclusion using the following criteria: Contribution to existing body of knowledge and scholarship Relevance of paper to symposium theme Suitable methodology or approach Currency of material and research Supported by related and compelling evidence Originality of argument, ideas, or content Development of argument Organisation and structure Clarity of style and expression Complies with APA referencing system Formatting meets submission format requirements Refereed Paper Key Dates Submission Deadline 17 th August 2018 Notification of acceptance 21 st September 2018 Final resubmission deadline 12 th October 2018 Call to Present PASS & Peer Learning Symposium 2

3 Workshops: Workshops should aim to report on practice based initiatives, outcomes of early research or showcase ideas or activities that are indicative of best practice and innovation within the areas of PASS or Peer Learning. Workshops should explain what is done, how it is done and the impact (or expected impact) while providing opportunities for audience participation and collaboration. Presentation length: 40mins Submission Process: To submit a workshop, please provide a proposal with the following information to pass-nationalcentre@uow.edu.au by the submission deadline: Completed cover letter (pg7) Abstract (120 word limit) An outline on how the proposed workshop will address the below criteria (including a session plan, key questions or discussion points) References included where appropriate A description of how the workshop will involve participants Proposals should not exceed 4 pages (including the cover letter) Workshops will be assessed for inclusion using the following criteria: Contains an academic focus and the initiative, idea or activity supports students learning Relevance to symposium theme Reference/Contribution to an existing body of knowledge. Providing a theoretical underpinning to the proposed workshop is highly desirable. 4 Speed Talks: Speed Talks are an opportunity to share the detail about your program or service, present an initiative, idea or activity in an informal setting. The short duration is well suited to introduce new projects, highlight operational improvements, present stories of achievements or works that are in progress. It is recommended that presenters use no more than 6 slides. Presentation length: 20mins Submission process: To submit a Speed Talk, please provide a proposal with the following information to pass-nationalcentre@uow.edu.au by the submission deadline: Completed cover letter (pg7) Abstract (120 word limit) An outline on what will be raised at the Speed Talk References to supporting literature included where appropriate Proposals should not exceed 2 pages (including the cover letter) Speed Talks will be assessed for inclusion using the following criteria: Contains an academic focus and the initiative, idea or activity supports students learning Relevance to symposium theme Currency of material Originality of innovation or ideas Speed Talks Key Dates Submission Deadline Notification of acceptance Extended to Friday 7 September 21 September Call to Present PASS & Peer Learning Symposium 4

5 Poster Presentations: With the aim of showcasing the excellence and diversity of PASS and Peer Learning, poster presentations are invited from staff and students to exhibit presentations outlining their academic programs and activities. Presentation format: Posters should be A1 size (841 x 594 mm) Posters are to be orientated in the portrait/vertical position One session during the Symposium will be dedicated to presenting the posters The final printing of the A1 poster is the author s responsibility Submission process: To submit a poster presentation, please provide a proposal with the following information to pass-nationalcentre@uow.edu.au by the submission deadline: Completed cover letter (pg7) Abstract (120 word limit) Summary of content References included where appropriate Proposals should not exceed 2 pages (including the cover letter) Successful Poster Presentations may consider one or more of the following areas: The disciplines for which the Program is run The number of students/leaders involved Any achievements/innovations of the Program Best practice elements History of the Program Role of the program within the university structure A new peer learning initiative or pilot program Poster Presentation Key Dates Submission Deadline Notification of acceptance Extended to Friday 7 September 21 September Call to Present PASS & Peer Learning Symposium 5

6 Audio Visual Requirements The following equipment will be provided in each room by the National Centre for PASS: Screen Projector Laptop If further AV equipment is required, this will be up to individual institutions to organise. Presenters are responsible for bringing all presentation slides on a USB or other compatible device and setting their own presentation up on the laptop prior to the commencement of their session.
