3 Partnership and Collaboration MathWorks is committed to several important goals. One is to change the world by accelerating the pace of discovery, innovation, development, and learning in engineering and science. Another is to give back to the communities both local and global where we live and work. To meet these goals, we ve defined a Social Mission built on five pillars: Investments in Education Staff-Driven Initiatives Local Community Support Green Initiatives Global Relief Efforts In the following pages, you ll meet some of the organizations we work with around the world dedicated to inspiring young people, helping those in need, and conserving the world s natural resources. We are grateful for these opportunities to serve with those who share the MathWorks guiding principle, Do the right thing. 4 INVESTMENTS IN EDUCATION MathWorks supports education programs that inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists. Our education investments focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) disciplines, from the elementary to the university level. Student Competitions Engineering competitions challenge students to develop problem-solving skills. In , we sponsored 36 student programs with financial support, training, software, and coaching. These programs include the International Math Olympiad, FIRST Robotics, RoboCup Dutch Open, and Formula Student Germany. Museum Partnerships MathWorks supports museum exhibits, education programs, and traveling science workshops around the world. Organizations we support include: Cambridge Science Centre, Cambridge, UK The Discovery Museums, Acton, MA EcoTarium, Worcester, MA Museum of Science, Boston, MA New England Aquarium, Boston, MA Palais de la Découverte, Paris, France Highlights: Investments in Education Competitions with 36 MathWorks as lead sponsor 2723 Teams receiving software from MathWorks 5,000,000+ DOLLArs of mathworks funding STEM Sponsorships In , we provided funding and STEM ambassadors to programs including: Apprentis d Auteuil, Paris, France Artisan s Asylum, Somerville, MA Makespace, Cambridge, UK Build It! robotics program at the Cambridge Science Centre, UK DIGITS, a program to inspire 6th graders to explore STEM careers Massachusetts State Science and Engineering Fair MIT Science Trivia Challenge University Fellowships MathWorks supports engineering students who excel in developing innovative solutions to complex problems. In 2012 and again in 2013, we funded six fellowships at educational institutions in the US, Germany, and the UK. Research Grants Each year, MathWorks awards research grants to researchers at eligible educational institutions in the US and the UK who use MATLAB and Simulink in innovative ways. $450,000+ awarded to fund five research grants in 2012 $600,000+ awarded to fund six research grants in 2013 Curriculum Development MathWorks supports eligible educational institutions that design curricula around MATLAB, Simulink, and Model-Based Design and use active teaching approaches such as project-based learning. In 2012, we awarded nearly $500,000 to 21 universities around the world, and in 2013, we awarded more than $1,000,000 to 30 universities.
5 SPOTLIGHT: Artisan s Asylum Artisan s Asylum offers do-it-yourself community labs plus classes, studio space, and equipment for artists and makers in Somerville, MA. As the first corporate sponsor, MathWorks outfitted the Artisan s Asylum lab with MATLAB and Simulink. MathWorks and the Maker Movement In addition to sponsoring Artisan s Asylum, MathWorks engages with makers and robotics fans around the world. We recently launched the MakerZone web site (makerzone.mathworks.com) with MATLAB and Simulink resources for developers using Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and LEGO NXT. 10 Workstations outfitted with MATLAB and Simulink, Artisan s Asylum members with access to MATLAB and Simulink 42 Contestants in the MathWorks sponsored robotics competition, Students taking robotics courses taught by MathWorks engineers
6 STAFF-DRIVEN INITIATIVES In the annual MathWorks Volunteer Challenge, staff members donate time and energy to projects benefitting the communities where they live and work. We support these personal commitments with paid time off and matching donations. Volunteering Each full-time staff member is eligible for eight hours of paid volunteer time per year. In 2012 and 2013, over 1100 staff donated their paid volunteer hours. Staff-Initiated Drives Throughout the year, staff members initiate drives to benefit local organizations. These include collecting winter holiday gifts for needy children, families, and seniors both locally and through Toys for Tots. Our annual Blizzard of Backpacks gives disadvantaged children backpacks filled with fresh school supplies. The MathWorks Finance and Operations group s annual car wash raised over $5000 for the Boys & Girls Club. A-Thon Matching Program When staff members run, walk, or bike for charity, MathWorks matches 100% of donations from fellow employees (up to $500 for each contributor) and up to $500 from outside pledges. In 2012 and 2013, we gave nearly $110,000 in matching funds to fundraisers including the Boston Marathon, Autism Speaks, the Association for India s Development, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. End-of-Year Donations MathWorks staff members research, nominate, and select charitable organizations to receive yearend donations. In each of the past two years, donations totaling more than $229,000 reached 121 charitable groups, including: Highlights: Donations $229,000 end-of-year donations $110,000 A-Thon matching donations 31 The Red Cross Boston Health Care for the Homeless Doctors Without Borders Medical Missions for Children National Heart Foundation, Australia SOS Children s Villages, Germany, the UK, and the US New England Wildflower Society Paranga Charitable Trust 238 organizations supported by staff initiatives worldwide
7 SPOTLIGHT: Volunteer Challenge 2013 Each spring, MathWorks employees offer their paid volunteer time to work on projects such as helping at a community farm, tutoring school children, shelving books at a local library, and delivering hot meals to the elderly. Volunteer Organizations MathWorks staff around the world volunteer each year at dozens of different organizations. This year s sites included: Nature Conservancies Easy Care Gardening, Australia; Natick Trail Buddies; Waltham Community Farms; Wicken Fen, UK Community Service Programs Anglesey Abbey, UK; Capital Area Food Bank; Cradles to Crayons Educational and Cultural Institutions Cambridge Computing Museum, UK; The Discovery Museums, MA 8 MathWorks offices participating worldwide 45+ Number of volunteer events Number of paid volunteer hours 450+ Number of staff volunteers
8 LOCAL COMMUNITY SUPPORT MathWorks supports local initiatives that help develop and enrich the communities in which we operate, with a special focus on educational programs, conservation, and public broadcasting Highlights: Global Impact of Local Giving 170,000+ dollars of MathWorks funding 19 local communities reached 62 community programs sponsored Local Community Grants The MathWorks Community Grant Program provides financial support and sponsorship to nonprofit organizations and programs. In , we awarded nearly $90,000 to 52 local community programs, including: Big Brothers Big Sisters Cambridge Hub, UK Cambridge Student Community Action, UK SchwanthalerFlöhe e.v. Child Care Center, Germany Science Club for Girls The Natick Education Foundation Town of Natick Recreation and Parks Department Tree planting project, Ismaning, Germany Villiers Park Educational Trust, UK Scholarships Each year, MathWorks awards four scholarships to high school seniors in Natick, MA who plan to study engineering, math, or science at the university level. Mass Audubon MathWorks is a corporate supporter of Mass Audubon, which works to protect 35,000 acres of Massachusetts conservation land. Mass Audubon provides school, camp, and other educational programs for 225,000 children and adults annually, and advocates for sound environmental policies at local, state, and federal levels.
9 SPOTLIGHT: Public Broadcasting MathWorks supports public radio and television stations producing local and national programming that informs, enlightens, and enriches. WGBH and WBUR-FM share our commitment to education and reflect the way we work by gathering many voices and diverse opinions. WGBH Public television programs from WGBH are produced in Boston and shared with the world, including NOVA, television s highest-rated science program. WGBH is the largest producer of prime-time and children s programs on PBS. WBUR-FM 90.9 WBUR-FM NPR news station produces nationally syndicated radio programs, including On Point, Here & Now, Only A Game, and Car Talk, reaching millions of listeners each week across the US and online million Number of viewers watching WGBH-TV shows each month 30+ Hours of locally produced programs aired each week 100+ Countries worldwide that broadcast WGBH s NOVA 3.1 million Weekly listeners of WBUR-FM s Here & Now Source: WGBH, Source: 90.9 WBUR-FM
10 GREEN INITIATIVES At MathWorks, we strive to minimize our impact on Earth s resources. Recent projects include making offices greener in their use of materials and energy. MathWorks encourages responsible environmental stewardship at work and at home Highlights: Items Recycled on Annual Technology Recycling Day tons mixed electronics pounds LCD screens hard drives Sustainability: Greener Buildings Recent building projects at our UK office and at our corporate headquarters in Natick, MA emphasized environmental sustainability. Sustainable building features include lighting systems and solar panels designed to save energy and reduce emissions, electric car charging stations in renovated parking facilities, low-emission building materials, and smart building management systems. The MathWorks UK office has installed water conservation features, including rainwater irrigation tanks and a roof-top rainwater harvesting system, to cut water usage by up to 30%. Green Awareness Programs We work to save energy at all our corporate offices. Recent campaigns focused on reducing waste in kitchens, copy rooms, and cafeterias. The GreenWorkers employee group promotes sustainable practices at home and at work pounds packaging Recycling Company recycling programs ensure we minimize waste. Kitchens and cafeterias promote reusable dishware and reduced waste. Recycled office supply sources include paper, printer cartridges, and batteries. Green Plantings at Apple Hill In 2013, we planted hundreds of new trees and shrubs at Apple Hill in Natick, MA to improve the green space and landscaping of the MathWorks campus. More than 200 new evergreen trees include eastern red cedar, Swiss stone pine, Colorado blue spruce, and Fraser fir. We also planted over 100 new deciduous trees (maple, elm, oak, and ash) and over 700 new shrubs.
11 SPOTLIGHT: Greener Facilities MathWorks maintains ongoing programs to protect the local environment, improve efficiency, and reduce our carbon footprint. Our facilities management plans emphasize reducing energy consumption and using resources efficiently. Apple Hill and the UK Office: Green Building Projects Each time MathWorks renovates or builds new office space, we include green building practices. 75% Yearly energy saving with retrofitted light fixtures 456 Solar panels installed on Apple Hill 2, producing 10% of the building s power 40% Cut in power use with new HVAC system, UK 30% Reduction in water usage with rainwater harvesting system, UK
12 GLOBAL RELIEF EFFORTS MathWorks supports disaster relief and humanitarian relief efforts worldwide through individual staff and company donations. In partnership with relief organizations, we contribute to disaster relief efforts and humanitarian aid Highlights: Global Relief Donations $28,000+ Typhoon Haiyan relief $14,500+ Uttarakhand, India flood relief 11,000+ Central European flood relief $50,000+ Boston Marathon bombing victims $31,000+ Hurricane Sandy emergency supplies Disaster Relief MathWorks partners with established nonprofit organizations that provide material relief worldwide. In 2012 and 2013, we supported the following initiatives: Typhoon Haiyan relief Uttarakhand, India flood relief Central European flood relief Boston Marathon bombing victims Hurricane Sandy emergency supplies Syrian refugee relief Humanitarian Efforts MathWorks staff members come from all corners of the globe, and their charitable relief donations reach across the world. Each year they show great generosity in responding to global disasters, famine, and poverty. In the wake of Hurricane Isaac in August 2012, one staff member used her vacation time to travel to the Gulf Coast to serve as a volunteer relief worker with the American Red Cross. The same spirit inspired an employee to organize a relief drive for residents of Sea Bright, New Jersey who were displaced by Hurricane Sandy in October $16,000+ Syrian refugee relief
13 SPOTLIGHT: Global Relief Efforts By partnering with CARE International, MathWorks helps to fund global efforts to end poverty, relieve suffering, and provide food, shelter, and life-saving essentials to people affected by disasters around the world. CARE International CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty, with a focus on education and empowering women. CARE also delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters. CARE International delivers aid in these areas of need: Emergency Response Education Climate Change HIV and AIDS 166,000 People given temporary shelter Maternal Health Economic Development Food Security Water Sanitation and Hygiene 2.4 million People with improved living conditions 650,000 People receiving emergency supplies 1.5 million People with increased access to clean water Source: CARE International,
