1 Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize June 3, 2010 Dear Colleague: The University of Oklahoma's College of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with Jearme Hoffman Smith, is pleased to announce the begirming ofthe application process for the fifth biennial Thatcher Hoffman Smith Creativity in Motion Prize of$40,000. The prize, which was awarded to Elizabeth Ingraham in 2003, Steven C. Levi in 2005, Philip S. Solomon in 2007, and David Mason in 2009, recognizes, honors and encourages an individual's creative process as it unfolds. To learn more about previous award recipients, their work and the history ofthe prize, we invite you to visitour Web site at This prize is open to all fields and will be given to an individual whose creative project is currentlyunder way. The focus ofthe award is on the process itself, not a completed project. Past applications came from practitioners of many disciplines: scientists, artists, film makers, authors, educators and more. Last year, over 350 ~pplications were received from creative irmovators hom across the United States. The submission guidelines and application process have been modified from previous years. 3 Thatcher Hofflnan Smith Prize PURPOSE AND GOALS The Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize, established iii 2002, is a biennial prize honoring the creative I. process, Creativity in Motion. This prize celebrates a visionary creative work in process, recognizing the power of original thought and expression in possjbly enriching the world around us. The work or project must be under way at the time of application. This prize is open to all fields of creativity, including, but not limited to, the arts, cultural affairs, education and science. Those individuals or organizations makjng successful proposals will be awarded grants up to, but not in excess of, $40,000 from the committee. The committee's awards panel will select for funding those projects that fulfill the selection guidelines below. ELIGIBILITY The prize is available to U.S. citizens and may be used in any way the recipient chooses. You do not have to be a 50l(e)3 to qualify for this opportunity. SELECTION GUIDELINES The guidelines below will be considered when making prize determinations. The weight given to each of these guidelines will be detennined by the prize panel. The panel will decide whether the proposed project: Ii will be of highest quality.. is original.. clearly explains the applicant's creative process provides proof that the proposed project is in progress.. will be successfully carried out by applicant II has such other qualities which lead the awards panelto conclude that an award is appropriate, and has the possibility of enriching the world around us.

4 HOW TO FILE Fair judging demands that all proposals follow exactly the same foim. Therefore, to be considered by the prize panel, each application must follow the filing requirements listed below. The grant will be offered biennially, with the next deadline for submission in August, 20 IO. 1. The deadline for 2011 prize is Tuesday, August 31, Applications must be postmarked by this date or they will not be considered. Early submission of applications by mail is encouraged. Applications should be mailed to The Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize, University of Oklahoma, College of Arts & Sciences, 633 Elm Avenue, Room 323, Norman, OK Applicants must submit (1) original and (3) complete copies of each prize application. The dimensions of each application should not exceed 8-112" x 11". Separate each copy with paper clips or by inserting a different color sheet of paper between applications. Individuals/ organizations will receive official notification of prizes by mail in January, 2011 with the prize awarded at a presentation in March REQUIREMENTS FOR GRANT RECIPIENTS 1. Liability Award recipients agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma, its employees, regents, officers and agents, in connection with any action, demands, claim, lawsuit, charge, or proceeding, including but not limited to any civil action in State or Federal Court, or before any State or Federal agency, which is made or brought against recipients, University, and/or any of the University's employees, agents, officers, regents, by any person or entity, based upon and/or arising out of a recipient's use of the funds provided to the recipient by the University pursuant to this contract. II. Acknowledgments For this program to continue to grow, it is imperative that recipients give proper acknowledgment to the Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize for administering the prize funds. Organizations must comply with the following acknowledgment requirements if awarded a pnze: I. Prize recipients must include the line "This project was made possible, in part, by a grant from the Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize on Creativity in Motion" on all promotional materials, including news releases. The line must appear no smaller than in 6-point type in any publication. If you have questions about complying with requirements, call the College of Arts & Sciences to have your publication reviewed. 2. Events including announcements from the organization to the audience must include an announcement using the line "This project was made possible, in part, by a prize from the Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize on Creativity in Motion."

At the top of each sheet type the name of your organization, project title, and the question. No more than one page is allowed per question. Applications with more than one page per question will be discarded. 1. Provide a description of the project, from inception to potential completion. How is your process creative? 2. State the goals of this project and justify the need for this project. 3. Describe your proposed methods for evaluating the project's effectiveness. What criteria will you use in the evaluation? 4. Describe specifically how the funds might be used. 5. Outline the publicity and promotional plans leading up to your event or project. 6. Please include a one-page autobiography and/or curriculum vitae. You may also include no more than three pages of photos or other visual aids of the project to date. If the selection committee wants more information or supporting materials, they will contact the applicant directly.

6 ASSURANCES AND CERTIFICATION If a prize is awarded, the applicant hereby gives assurance to the Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize Committee that: 1. The activities for which financial assistance is sought will be administered by or under the supervision of the applying organization. 2. The applicant has read, understands and will confonn to the intent outlined in the program guidelines. 3. The applicant will comply with all applicable City, County, State and Federal laws, regulations and ordinances, including but not limited to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended; the Fair Labor Standards Act; the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. 4. The undersigned have been duly authorized by the applying organization to submit the application to the Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize Committee, and further certify that the infonnation contained in the application, including all attachments and supporting material, is true and correct to the best of their knowledge.
