1 Funding News August 2018 Communities Together Fund! Nearly 200,000 is now available for East Devon community projects through the Communities Together Fund, which is money from East Devon District Council and Devon County Council. East Devon District Council has put 10p into the grant pot for every 1 from Devon County Council. Projects must show communities working together; identifying new ideas for their mutual benefit. Applications are welcome from community projects that will benefit, enhance and make a real difference to communities. Voluntary and community groups, town and parish councils, community interest companies and registered charities can apply. Projects are more likely to be funded if they involve organisations working together. Organisations can apply for between 400 and 30,000 from the Communities Together Fund. 20% of the total costs of your project must come from other sources such as other grants schemes, your own reserves or your own fundraising. Projects must benefit two or more town or parish council areas. Exmouth, as part of a pilot scheme, are managing their own funding so must not be included in this number. The closing date for all application is midnight on Wednesday 16 January 2019, all applications will be considered after this date. You would be notified of the outcome around the end of March It will be a competitive fund, so they aren t expecting to be able to fund all the projects that apply. All applications will be assessed by East Devon District Council and Devon County Council. 2 Crowdfund Devon Set up to support community groups, start-up social enterprises, charities and individuals across the county to raise money from the crowd and unlock extra funding from the Crowdfund Devon partners. Devon County Council, CVS partners, and the Police, are all working with Crowdfunder, to build opportunities for community groups to bid for funding to help local projects get off the ground. Projects that run an all-or-nothing Crowdfund on Crowdfunder and reach 100% of their funding target can unlock extra funding from one of the Crowdfund Devon partners. The funds are: Devon County Council s Community Chest Community Resilience Fund (Police) Crowdfund Devon is for projects that benefit the community, support wellbeing, work towards a better environment, reward innovation or support new ideas. CVS can give help and advice on running a crowdfunding campaign. Crowdfunding is not a funding panacea nor suitable for every cause. However crowdfunding can do things traditional grants can t. crowdfund-devon/ Co-operative Bank Donation Fund Organisations such as Registered Charities, Community Interest Companies, Co-operatives and Credit Unions; etc. that have a Community Directplus account with the Co-operative Bank have until the 30th September 2018 to apply for funding of up to 1,000 from the Customer Donation Fund. Music for All The charity of the UK musical instrument industry, Music for All was founded on the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to learn to play music. Community groups, schools and individuals can apply for grant and other support for community music making projects that offer experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds. Projects and initiatives supported will be: ~Taking place in the UK ~Aiming to bring music to their community ~Needing a helping hand to fulfil their potential in becoming truly sustainable music programmes. The application deadline is 1st November 2018 for funding requirement in the following January.to purchase thirty brass instruments manufactured in plastic to encourage the children to take up music. Royal Geographic Society Two grants of 1,000 each are available to fund innovative geography teaching at secondary level. The aim of the grants is to enable imaginative, innovative or creative teaching materials to be developed. The grants will be awarded to teacher higher education partnerships. Ideally these will comprise one school teacher and one lecturer/researcher from a UK Higher Education Institution. The funding is being made available through the Innovative Geography Teaching Grants. Every year, the Society identifies an area of research which is either based upon a timely issue or approach. The aim is to serve both geography pupils and the wider teaching community through the creation of teaching materials on this particular issue. The materials produced will be published on the Society s website. The application deadline is the 15th February Page 2 Funding News August 2018

3 NatWest Skills and Opportunities Fund The 2 million Skills and Opportunities Fund will re-open for applications in early September. Charities, social enterprises, community groups, state-funded schools and colleges across the UK and Ireland will be able to apply for funding of up to 35,000 to help people in disadvantaged communities develop create or access the skills and opportunities they need to help themselves and skills that will enable them to get into work or start a business. When all applications have been received and reviewed, the NatWest will publish a shortlist of projects being considered for funding in each region. Voting will then be open to the public. The outcome of the public vote will be taken into consideration by the regional judging panels. Previous winners included: John Hampden Grammar School which received funding towards a project aimed at young adults who are struggling to reach the required standards or have behavioural issues and come from deprived backgrounds. The Women s Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre which received funding for a Women Ex-Offenders Peer Mentoring Programme which aims to improve the life chances of women ex-offenders through educational and volunteering opportunities. St. Joseph s Primary School, in Northern Ireland received funding to become the first primary school in the UK to promote enterprise by embedding design thinking and creativity into the whole school curriculum. The Weavers Company Small registered charities can apply for grants of up to 15,000 for projects working with: ~Young offenders; ~Prisoners and ex-prisoners ~Young disadvantaged people at risk of criminal involvement. To be eligible for funding, local organisations such as those working in a village, estate or small town should normally have an income of less than 100,000. Those working across the UK or in larger areas should normally have an income of not more than 250,000. Grants are usually given for one year. Applicants must show that they have investigated other sources of funding and made plans for the future, which should include replacement funding if appropriate. In addition, the Company will pay a maximum of 2,000 supply cover to the school. Grants offer the opportunity to take time out from the classroom in order to undertake an original project in the UK or abroad and can cover costs including travel, accommodation and materials. Applications will be judged on their potential to enhance a teacher's professional life and benefit his/her students on completion. 4 Greggs Foundation Local Community Projects Fund The next application deadline for the Local Community Projects Fund is the 28th September The foundation is a grant making trust which distributes around 1.8 million per year to organisations. The Local Community Projects Fund makes grants of up to 2,000 to not for profit organisations with a turnover of less than 300,000 a year who work to reduce the disadvantage of the most deprived people in the community. This should include one or more of the following communities of interest i.e. people who are. Disabled or suffering chronic illness Living in poverty Voluntary carers Homeless people Isolated older people Other demonstrable significant need The Foundation are more likely to make grants to local organisations based near Greggs shops. Please use the shop locator on the Greggs website to find their nearest shop. Theatres Trust s -Theatres Grants Scheme Open to applications for capital grants of up to 5,000. Organisations eligible to apply will be running small theatres, have UK charitable or not-for-profit legal structures and be: ~Owned or manage theatres with titles or signed leases of more than 5 years on buildings ~Running a regular theatre programme of professional, community and/or amateur work presenting no less than 30 performances a year~able to provide certified or audited accounts for at least two years Priority is given to projects that address urgent building repairs, improve operational viability, introduce environmental improvements and enhance physical accessibility. The scheme can also be used to help lever in other sources of investment, particularly philanthropic support. Applications for technical equipment and refurbishment of soft furnishings are a low priority for the scheme. Applicants are encouraged to discuss their project with The Theatres Trust before applying. Contact advice@theatrestrust.org.uk for more information. The closing date is noon on Tuesday 8th January The Rowing Foundation The Foundation has re-opened its grants programme. The purpose of the Foundation is to promote the participation in rowing of young people (those under 18 or still in full time education) and the disabled of all ages. The Foundation gives grants of 500-3,000 (up to 50% of the cost of the project) to help British rowing organisations, clubs and schools for rowing equipment and whose requirements June be too small or who June be otherwise ineligible for an approach to the National Lottery or other similar sources of funds. 5 Wessex Youth Trust The Trust awards grants to registered charities (including schools pre-schools and PTAs) that help, support and advance the wellbeing of disadvantaged children and young people up to the age of 21 years. Applications from self-help organisations and charities requiring seed corn funding or pump priming for the development of more extensive fund-raising initiatives are preferred, as are specific project funding requests rather than contributions to broader appeals. Next deadline for applications to the is the 1st November One Stop s Carriers for Causes Not for profit organisations, including schools that are located within 2 miles of a One Stop shop can apply for grants of up to 1,000 for projects that benefit their local community. One Stop s Carriers for Causes is funded through the money raised from the 5p bag charge in One Stop stores in England, Wales and Scotland. The grants are available for a wide range of activities and the funding will cover the direct costs needed to deliver the project. Projects eligible for funding include: What types of projects are eligible? One off community events such as community fun day expenses, summer youth camp, litter picking, sports events, expenses to pay for terminally ill cancer patients on visits to the seaside. Purchasing items to run a project such as specialised medical equipment, football/ cricket /netball kit for local junior club, arts and craft materials for a workshop, kitchen equipment for a healthy eating project, marketing materials for an event, fishing kit for youth project. Improvements to community buildings such as painting, refurbishing buildings such as hospices, scout or guide huts, school building, community centres. Improvements to external spaces such as park clean ups, community gardens, hospital/hospice gardens, disabled access projects, food growing projects, woodland walk. Purchasing materials to undertake a place-based improvement project such as buying paint, litter pickers, gravel, grass seed, plants, and benches. Applications can be submitted at any time and are shortlisted on a quarterly basis for panel decision which will take place every three months. Applicants will generally know the outcome of your application within 16 weeks of applying. Page 5 Funding News August 2018

6 Association for Industrial Archaeology Gants up to 20,000 are available for the restoration of important industrial buildings, structures, machinery, vehicles and vessels within the UK. Grants can be made to not-for-profit organisations such as trusts, charities and CICs and are for capital funding only. Applications will usually relate to a single, tangible structure or artefact and the grant is to be used as partnership funding, the applicant being in the process of or having already raised matching funding from their own resources, fund raising, or other grant award. Applications should be submitted on no more than 4 sides of A4 paper and cover all the areas outlined in the Guidelines.The closing date for applications is the 31st March Previous projects funded include: A grant of 6,790 for the further restoration of the Danzey Green Windmill at the Avoncroft Museum of Buildings. A grant of 20,000 for the restoration of the derelict Bowbridge Lock on the Thames & Severn Canal by the Cotswold Canal Trust. A grant of 2,000 towards the cost of rebuilding of a wagon weigh bridge. dm_i=1t5m,5e18i,b4vntw,kuu87,1 The Fore Trust The Trust is offering development funding of up to 30,000 and business support to expand the capacity of small charities, social enterprises and community interest companies. To qualify applicant organisations will need to have a turnover of less than 500,000 per year). To apply for funding, organisations must register at the start of each funding round. Numbers for each round are capped and registration are accepted on a first-come, firstserve basis. Once the cap is reached, the round is closed. Once successfully registered, organisations are invited to submit a simple application. The closing date will be the 3rd September WHSmith Trust Voluntary organisations, charities schools and pre-schools can apply for grants of up to 500 from the WHSmith Trust. The WHSmith Trust is an independent registered charity that uses the proceeds of the compulsory carrier bag charges across the UK to offer the grants to support good causes in the local communities where WHSmith operates. There are two application rounds each year. The deadline for the current funding round is the 30th September Applications can be submitted via an online applications form. 7 Lloyds Bank Foundation for England & Wales The Foundation has published its new strategy for the next five years. Included in the Reaching Further strategy is: ~A pledge to boost its additional support for the charities that it funds, which will include an expansion of its mentoring scheme whereby members of Lloyds Bank plc volunteer their expertise to grant receiving charities. ~The Foundation mainly funds organisations with an income of less than 1m. ~An increase the size of its largest grants to 200,000 over their six-year duration ~A target of funding 700 charities at any one time until 2022 ~A pledge to offer longer, unrestricted grants to more small charities together with six-year grants with a break clause after the third year ~The continuation of its advocacy work, with a particular focus on producing research and campaigning for policy changes on behalf of small charities. The Foundation offers two grant programmes: (Charities can apply for either programme, but not both) Invest Grants: long-term funding for the day-to-day running of a charity (core costs), and/or the direct delivery of a charity s work. Grants of a minimum of 30,000 to a maximum of 100,000, delivered across three years are available with the opportunity for continuation funding (up to six years in total). There are set annual rounds The next round opens on 27 August 2018 and closes on 5 October 2018 Enable Grants: are awarded to charities which have identified clear development needs with grants of up to a total of 15,000 across one or two years available to cover, for example, pilot initiatives, strengthening monitoring systems or creating stronger business plans and service development plans. This programme is temporarily closed and will reopen for applications under new guidelines on the 27th August Institute of Physics Schools and colleges can apply for grants of up to 600 for small-scale projects or events linked to the teaching or promotion of physics and engineering to pupils aged Grants can be used to support a wide range of projects such as school-based science weeks, extracurricular activities, science clubs, careers event or a visit from a working physicist or engineer. Grants may be used for the following project-related purposes: materials / resources; transport; marketing and publicity; other purposes deemed appropriate by the judges; and supply cover (in certain circumstances). Previous projects to receive funding include: Ampleforth College for a visit to Jodrell Bank Radio Observatory. St John s High School for a Practical Rocketry workshop to design a water propelled rocket. 8 Dan Maskell Tennis Trust Gants of up to 1,500 are available to special schools, disability groups and associations, etc. for equipment and specialist wheelchairs to enable disabled people to play tennis. Individuals can apply for grants of up to 500. Individuals can receive support for sports wheelchairs, tennis rackets, coaching lessons with a Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) licensed coach or course fees for official LTA development/ coaching courses. Groups can apply for: Wheelchairs; Court hire; Coaching fees; and equipment packages which will include:~rackets ~Balls ~Mini net ~Coaching aids such as: cones and throw down marker lines. In the case of wheelchairs, a deposit will be required; for individuals, the amount of deposit required will depend on the wheelchair type requested, clubs will need to raise a deposit of 800. The next closing date for applications is the 1st October. Friends Provident Foundation Building Resilient Economies Programme The programme aims to build a more resilient, fairer and sustainable economic system. Organisations working within the UK who want to help transform financial systems into engines for social benefit can apply for grants through the Foundation. Grants in the past have been up to 200,000 to cover capital or revenue funding, core costs or project costs. Activities funded will fit closely with the aims of the Foundation and deliver one of two key outcomes. System Change Local Economic Resilience. Under Systems Change the Foundation will be looking to support projects that develop and demonstrate methods that will effectively change policy and corporate behaviours in pursuit of wider social objectives. Under Local economic resilience the Foundation is looking to support projects that share learning about effective ways for communities to create more sustainable economic systems and retain more of the value generated. This might include creating community assets or new approaches to local finance. Deadline 5th November Hilden Charitable Fund The fund makes grants to projects that address disadvantage and by supporting causes which are less popular. In particular, the Fund wants to support projects that: ~Address homelessness ~Supports asylum seekers and refugees ~Support community based initiatives for disadvantaged young people ~Penal affairs. The average grant awarded is 5,000 and preference is given to supporting small community organisations with an income of less than 500,000 per year. The Trust will consider funding project as well as core running costs. 9 Women Make Music Grants Women songwriters and composers of all genres and backgrounds can apply for the next round of the Women Make Music programme. The programme supports the development of outstanding women songwriters and composers at different stages of their career. Grants are available of up to 5,000 to support touring, recording, promotion and marketing, community projects involving high-quality music creators, music creator residencies and live performances featuring new UK music. Deadline: 1st October DM Thomas Foundation The next deadline to apply to the Central Grants Programme is the 9th October Grants of up to 30,000 are available to registered charities for projects that improve education and health for young people in three key areas: Children and young people with disabilities Children and young people who are sick in hospital Children and young people who are life limited (requiring palliative care) The Foundation is a small charity and generally will not make awards of over 30,000 (per year). Funding can be requested for one-off projects or for up to 2 years work. Applications from schools and hospitals are welcomed as long as they are made through an appropriate registered charity. If favoured, grant applications for up to 5,000 can be approved by the Director, up to 10,000 can be approved by the Grants Committee, and applications for more than 10,000 are recommended to the Trustees for final approval. Patagonia The outdoor clothing company has funding of up to US$15,000 available for projects that address the root causes of environmental problems. Small, grassroots, activist organisations around the world, working on action orientated and multipronged campaigns to preserve and protect biodiversity and the environment, can apply for grants to run projects that protect local habitats. Applicants must be able to produce measurable project results, and Patagonia are particularly keen to support efforts that force the government to abide by laws. Creative methods to engage communities to take action, including film, photography and books will only be supported if they are tightly linked to a direct-action campaign on the issue, with specific goals that go beyond education and awareness. 10 Peter Cruddas For disadvantaged and disengaged young people in the age range of 14 to 30, to pursue pathways to Education, Training and Employment with the ultimate aim of helping them to become financially independent. There is no minimum or maximum amount and projects can be funded for more than one year. The next closing date for application is the 1st September Les Mils Fund for Children Grants of up to 1,000 for non-profit organisations who work to improve the education and physical and emotional wellbeing of children. Applicants applying for funding June focus on these areas: ~Living in Poverty ~Physical & Mental Health Problems ~Health & Wellbeing ~Living With Disability The next closing date for applications is the 9th October Sea-Changers In addition to their main programme, from spring 2018 Sea-Changers have announced a specific fund to address marine litter issues. The main objectives of the fund are to: ~Address the root causes of marine litter in the UK. ~Prevent/reduce marine litter impact on UK coastal and marine environments and/or species. ~Add to the body of knowledge about the nature and impact of marine litter in the UK.~Sea-Changers will look favourably on groups applying for projects that: ~Conduct beach cleaning activities ~Can demonstrate connections to existing wider beach clean activities~consider potential recycling options for material gathered One-off grants of up to 600 (in exceptional cases 1,000) are available through normally two funding rounds per year. Approximately 60 per cent of the funding available will support projects in Scotland with 40 per cent going elsewhere in UK. Marine litter focussed projects previously funded through Sea-Changers include: Mill Strand Integrated School, Portrush, Northern Ireland 300. Having adopted the beach and regularly undertaking litter picking as part of outdoor classroom learning the school aims to help local users and tourists to care for the beach and seas by sponsoring and installing a 2minutebeachclean station. Neptune s Army of Rubbish Cleaners (NARC) 500 to continue the work of this voluntary group of divers with a passion for keeping the underwater environment in Pembrokeshire litter free. The next deadline to apply is 30th September Sasakawa Foundation (Great Britain) Through its grant making programme cultural organisations, universities and schools; etc. that wish to develop links with Japan and Japanese schools are able to apply for funding. The Foundation s grants average 1,500 to 2,000 and do not normally exceed 5,000-6,000 for larger-scale projects. Grants are available to support the study of the Japanese language and culture, School, Education and Youth exchanges. In the past the Foundation has made grants towards visits the between the UK and Japan between by teachers and young people and the teaching and development of Japanese language and cultural studies in schools. 11 Kelly Family Trust Grant funding for registered charities whose activities involve supporting all or most family members in initiatives that encourage families to work together to tackle problems faced by one or more of its members. The Trust particularly likes to fund, new, small (i.e. with an annual income of less than 500k), charities in order to help them become more established. The three principal areas the charity supports are: Interventions that support families and help them in ways that prevent the fracture of the family unit, e.g. relationship counselling, mediation; Families where sexual abuse, physical abuse, domestic violence, alcohol abuse and drug abuse threatens the integrity of the family unit; and Prisoners- and in particular their families-during and after the period of imprisonment. Grants are usually up to 5k, although the Trust will occasionally consider requests for over 5k. Grants are awarded for revenue and capital projects. There is a match funding expectation and the Trust will expect applicants to have secured funding from other sources. Next deadline 1 st September, Localgiving has partnered with the Postcode Community Trust to offer over 400 grants of 500 to small charities and community groups across the UK through its Magic Little Grants Fund. Grants will be awarded to projects that meet either of the following themes: Overcoming barriers to participation in physical activities in creative ways Increasing social cohesion through developing access to sports and other recreational activities Grants can be used to support the general running costs of new and existing sports and physical activities. For example, this could include: Facilities hire, Kit & equipment, Coaching qualifications and Other volunteer expenses The fund is open to Localgiving registered charitable organisations operating within Great Britain (excluding Northern Ireland) with an annual income of under 50,000 that are running or planning to run a project that will encourage people to engage in some form of physical activity to help to improve their physical and mental health and well-being. Organisations that are not already a member of Localgiving are required to complete the Localgiving registration process before completing the application. Those awarded a grant will also receive an annual Local Giving membership worth 96. The application process is open until the 31st October Page 11 Funding News August 2018

12 BlueSpark Community groups in England can apply for grants to BlueSpark Foundation to support the education and development of children and young people through educational, cultural, sporting and other projects. BlueSpark is particularly keen to support projects which will help enhance the self-confidence, team working skills and future employability of children and young people. In most cases grants will be made on a relatively small scale. Many grants will be under 2,000, most will be under 5,000 and only in a few cases will grants exceed 10,000. Funding provided by BlueSpark for a project must be crucial to the project rather than marginally incremental to its funding. The funding available can be for physical assets (such as ipads, sports equipment, or lighting for stage productions) or for services or facilities (such as sports coaching or music or drama tuition) or simply for the provision of experiences (such as theatre visits). These examples are intended to be illustrative and not restrictive as to the funding which BlueSpark may provide to support projects. Action East Devon works for a happy and healthy East Devon where organisations, people and communities work together to ensure that everyone can lead full lives. Applications can be submitted at any time and must be made online on BlueSpark Foundation s standard Application Form. The King s Fund The GSK IMPACT Awards provide funding, training and development for registered charities working to make a positive difference to community health in the UK. Funded by British pharmaceutical company GSK and managed in partnership with The King s Fund, the awards are open to registered charities that are at least three years old, working in a healthrelated field in the UK, with a total annual income of between 80,000 and 2.5 million. The overall winner will receive 40,000 and up to 10 winners will receive 30,000, up to 10 runners-up will also receive 3,000. As part of the award, the winning charities are given the opportunity to take part in a training and development programme and join the Network of GSK IMPACT Award winners. This is valued at 8,000. Research bodies, advice agencies and groups focusing on broader social welfare work are not eligible. The assessment is based on the achievements of the whole organisation which must be focused on community health.
