2014 ANNUAL ORGANIZATIONAL REPORT This report gives an overview of the organization and covers activities and programs in the year This report also captures organizational activities from October 2013 when the organization received its full registration and approval. It also gives an overview of intended activities and plans for Alliance for Development 2013/2014
Message from the Executive Director Indeed every journey begins with a simple step, and it is the little drops of water that makes the mighty oceans we see around us. The desire to embark on a social entrepreneurial project that positively affects the lives of people and society had been long cherished. Having taken steps to regularize and legalize our activities, we received approval and registration of the organization Alliance for Development on 21 st October Our Vision We envision a world able to meet the needs of current and future generations; a world in which sustainable and long-lasting solutions are at the heart of development planning and implementation in all sectors. Our Mission In partnership with other stakeholders, we shall develop and implement initiatives, support and promote policies and share relevant knowledge and experiences aimed at the pro-motion and realization of sustainable development at all levels. Since our registration we have strove hard to fulfill this mandate in the hope that collectively with the actions of other stakeholders and rightholders we shall achieve our noble vision. This document essentially captures activities in 2014 and from October 2013, after registration. Appropriate systems and structures had to be instituted including Board of Directors, Management and Staff structures and Systems and Structures to ensure smooth operations. Very importantly, a Financial Policy was approved to guide the work of the organization and one that ensures transparency and accountability to all stakeholders and partners of the organization. We also succeeded in establishing official working relationship with other a number of stakeholder organizations we will be working with. Although we could not raise expected funds, we used our internally generated funds to finance all activities. Whiles working at expanding our sources of funding, we shall continue to provide core services to our targeted beneficiaries, majority of whom our children, youth and women. We welcome the support and partnership of other organizations and agencies in the pursuit and achievement of common and shared goals. Its our cherished hope that 2015 would be a more fruitful year. Thank you Laud K. Addo
OUR MISSION; PROGRAM AREAS AFD believes that especially in the post 2015 era, sustainable development should not just a mantra for a few technical persons, but rather inclusive in all our planning and implementation processes. We our convinced that through synergies and nexus of all stakeholders and rightholders, the sustainable development agenda is achievable, these are the core and fundamental principles of our mission: In partnership with other stakeholders, we shall develop and implement initiatives, support and promote policies and share relevant knowledge and experiences aimed at the pro-motion and realization of sustainable development at all levels. Program Area 1: Environmental sustainability and good health The environment provides the space for the sustenance of human lives and it is therefore critical that ecosystems and biodiversity be protected and secured for both the present and future generations. This also goes to promote proper sanitation and good health for active participation and maximum productivity. Program Area 2: Quality education and sustainable livelihoods Quality education & training is essential to development, sustainable livelihoods and the protection of human dignity. Working with other stakeholders, AFD shall promote the enjoyment of proper and quality education & training and engagement in sustainable livelihoods to protect and advance the dignity of humanity. Program Area 3: Participation, Leadership & Governance To build a stronger, inclusive and resilient society, all people irrespective of gender, socio-eco-political background, physical attributes, etc must be included and involved positively in shaping and governing our community. Good governance, peace and security and respect for human rights are critical to the continued progress of human society. AFD shall therefore work actively to promote these and other such ideals and principles. Program Area 4: Post 2015 & SDGs Based on our ongoing active involvement in the Post 2015, AFD shall follow through with vigorous participation in the SDGS campaign. Through our own efforts and collaborative alliances, we shall implement initiatives and interventions towards achieving the SDGs.
2013 & 2014 ACTIONS Under the period under review, we have undertaken a number of key actions, we have broadly categorized them under the headings: Registrations and Networks Advocacy & Campaigns Workshops, Training and Development Participation & Involvement Statements & Publications Registration & Networks We worked hard to achieve the following registrations during the period under review: Government registration with the Registrar General s Department This is the official government approval and registration we need to operate in the country. It was also key to gain memberships/registration/listing with other organizations and networks. Registration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Ghana. As an organization that works in the Environmental sector it was important to register with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Registration and listing with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI). This was only possible after registration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Associate Membership Registration with the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) Ghana, being a commonwealth member provided the opportunity for us register with the CYC. Registration with the National Youth Authority (NYA) of Ghana. This was necessary especially as we work with youth organizations. Global Youth Action Network (GYAN) This was our first registration accomplished as an organization. UN Major Group on Children and Youth (UN MGCY). The Major Group on Children & Youth is one of the nine major CSO stakeholder groups, through which the UN interacts with members from such community.
2. Advocacy & Campaigns Ebola Disease Since its report, the diseased affected four main countries in the West African su-bregion, and it threatened to affect many others. Its rapid spread meant it posed serious challenges to the entire developmental aspirations and processes of the west African region, and the global community as a whole. We utilized the infographic produced by UNICEF to embark on an aggressive social media campaign on the following main platforms: twitter, facebook and whatsapp. Sanitation Cholera is but now a regular disease outbreak in Accra. The cost of this is not only regrettably in the loss of human lives, but also on financial resources and productivity in homes and at the national levels. We were engaged in advocacy national radio (Citi FM) and television discussions (Joy TV & NET 2), sensitizing and educating the public on good sanitation practices. We also used these occasions to advocate for coherent waste management systems starting with waste separation at source. Picture shoot from Interview on Joy TV Interaction with EPA We also interacted with officials of the Environmental Protetction Agency (EPA) of Ghana. We raised two fundamental issues during this meeting: 1. Proper waste management in the country, especially in the urban centres. We proposed a program based on the Urban Let Total Sanitation module, for a pilot action an urban (community) led proper waste management. Lessons from this could be used to establish city-wide well integrated waste management system and structure. 2. Climate Change Adaptation & Mitigation We suggested harnessing of the strength and mobilizing abilities of youth for active education and implementation of adaptation and mitigation initiatives across the country.
Climate Change Advocacy Using social media, data and infographics we carried out a social media campaign to increase the awareness of the harmful and irreversible effects of climate change. This formed the first part of our CC project, we our currently seeking funding to implement the second part (REAP Recycle and Profit) which includes a project activity on climate change adaptation and mitigation. Participation and Involvement During the year under review, AFD was involved in a number of events and this included: West Africa Conference on Energy & Environment Organized by the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana (AHK Ghana), and supported by the Government of Ghana, this conference and exhibition brings together high-level and top decision makers from multisectorial areas. The conference provides for presentations, discussions and dialogue on challenges and emerging solutions in the energy and environmental sectors. It touches on themes including clean energy and climate change. National Dialogue on the Localization of the Post 2015 Organized by the National Development Planning Commission and the UN Country team in Ghana, this national consultation forms part of the second round of consultation focusing on the Means of Implementation. Localization and mainstreaming of the SDGs into national and subnational development plans will be key to implementing and achieving the SDGs. The consultation aimed at among other things learning from the MDGs for a better implementation of the SDGs.
World We Want MyWorld Survey This platform was very instrumental in our participation and involvement with the post 2015 agenda at the beginning. We followed all the process leading up to the work of the OWG Aside taking this survey, we also regularly communicated it through our websites and other platforms to increase participation of Ghanaian and African youth in the process. Projects 3Rs Project In the later part of 2014, we started implementing our 3R s project. Through this, we educated children and youth on the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, and on the importance of waste separation. We visited three (3) schools and 223 children and youth benefitted. Data on 3Rs Beneficiaries Jesus Alive School Gyemmah Preparatory Sch. His Grace Academy 0 Schools
