2 What is GFSI GFSI is an acronym for the Global Food Safety Initiative, founded in the year 2000 by the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF). The Consumer Goods Forum is an association that was founded by the CEO s of Global Food Companies and associated industries in a bid to increase fledgling consumer confidence in Food Safety globally as a result of frequent recalls, quarantines and negative publicity due to food safety concerns. The Global Food Safety Initiative hereafter (GFSI) was then launched as a non-profit making foundation in the year 2000, to achieve this through the harmonisation of food safety standards that would reduce audit duplication throughout the supply chain. At the time, there was no existing scheme that could be qualified as global that could be adopted by all. GFSI therefore chose to go down the route of benchmarking, developing a model that determines equivalency between existing food safety schemes, whilst leaving flexibility and choice in the marketplace. The Global Food Safety Initiative is no longer just a benchmarking organisation. While this remains one of its key activities, its collaborative approach to food safety brings together international food safety experts from the entire food supply chain at Technical Working Group and Stakeholder meetings, conferences and regional events to share knowledge and promote a harmonized approach to managing food safety across the industry. GFSI is managed by an industry-driven GFSI Board of Directors and supported by The Consumer Goods Forum Board of Directors, with particular support from Irene Rosenfeld, Chairman and CEO, Kraft Foods and Bill McEwan, President & CEO, Sobeys Inc (replacement to be confirmed soon).

3 GFSI Representation in South Africa The Consumer Goods Council of South Africa hereafter the (CGCSA) is a signatory to the GFSI, and furthers the aims of GFSI nationally through the locally developed Food Safety Initiative (FSI). The Food Safety Initiative hereafter (FSI) was launched by the CGCSA to address matters in the realm of Food Safety, Food Legislation and Nutrition. The FSI is currently driving the GFSI Global Markets Capacity Building Programme (GMCBP) which aims to place small to medium sized food companies, large and/ or less developed food companies and related industries on a continuous improvement path with regards to Food Safety that will ultimately lead to Certification where applicable.

DQS (Pty) Ltd was represented by DQS Chile, as part of the GFSI Technical Working Group which promulgated the GFSI harmonized audit and the Global Markets Capacity Building Programme. Within South Africa, DQS (Pty) Ltd is a member of the CGCSA and as a leading Certification body that has been carrying out 2nd Party Supplier and 3RD Party Certification audits to GFSI approved Food Safety Schemes, is placed in prime position to take Suppliers on the successful path to Certification.

6 The pathway to GFSI Compliance and life beyond GFSI (Certification) The programme is designed as a non-certification assessment process, which is carried out within a defined time period. The programme consists of three tiers of work, i.e. in tier one a series of food safety requirements known as the GFSI Basic Level Requirements should be implemented by the food business within a period of twelve months, after which the food business should progress to the next tier where a second series of food safety requirements, the GFSI Intermediate Level Requirements should be implemented within a twelve month period. Therefore within a two year period, the food business should be in a position to progress to full Certification against a GFSI recognised food safety scheme. A number of documents have been developed by the GFSI Global Markets Working Groups, which serve the purpose of providing guidance to the food businesses and assessors establishing compliance to the GFSI Basic and Intermediate Level Requirements. Simply put, as part of the Global Markets Capacity Building Programme hereafter GMCBP, all Suppliers who have not been certified against a GFSI approved Food Safety Scheme will begin on the GFSI Basic Assessment ) which is to be attained within 12 months of beginning the process. Once compliance to the Basic Assessment has been achieved, Suppliers are expected to move on to the Intermediate Assessment level within a further 12 months period ). Once compliance to the Intermediate Assessment has been attained, the next logical step for Suppliers will be Certification, depending on the arrangements between Suppliers and Customers. Upon successful completion of the Basic and Intermediate Assessments, a Non-accredited Certificate of Compliance is issued to the Supplier by DQS (Pty) Ltd.

7 The DQS (Pty) Ltd Way SELF ASSESSMENT BASIC LEVEL ASSESSMENT INTERMEDIATE LEVEL ASSESSMENT CERTIFICATION LEVEL ASSESSMENT PROHIBITED PROHIBITED DQS CERTIFICATION PROCESS CERTIFICATION WITHDRAWAL NOTE: All Basic and Intermediate level Assessments will be carried out on a tablet to enable real time completion of reports and a report turnaround time of 24 hours for each Assessment completed. Legend: Blue arrows: represent normal process flows Red arrows: represent forbidden pathways Green arrows: represent a loop back to the Certification Assessment once a Client Certificate has been withdrawn.
