We immediately started relief and rehabilitation works to help the people affected by the calamity. Our entire organization has been endeavoring for the past several months to help the earthquake survivors. With support from like-minded organizations and individuals across the world, we have committed to build 10,000 transitional shelter homes and 100 schools destroyed by the earthquake. 16 CSR Report 2015 Post Disaster Reconstruction and Rehabilitation At present, CG and its Post-Earthquake Relief Programme focuses on CG-Shikshyalaya (semipermanent schools) and CG-Ashraya (transitional shelters), as briefed in detail below. Reconstruction and rehabilitation is now the main focus; damaged homes and infrastructure, reclamation of degraded agricultural lands, rehabilitation of the displaced members of the population and restarting of livelihood activities are the main priorities. An important objective of the rebuilding process is to reduce the impact of future hazards. Attempts should be made to build back better, thereby reducing the risk of future disasters. Flexible strategies will allow communities to learn from past experiences, thereby reducing their future exposure. The adoption of alternative and diversified livelihood strategies is of paramount importance and plays a large part in increasing the future resilience of exposed communities. Many pre-disaster phase and post disaster activities appear similar, resembling development activities. In practice disaster risk reduction is a core component of development. Proactive and coordinated actions taken on the ground by vulnerable communities generate positive impacts in disaster management. 12

31 Nepal Social Business 27

32 CSR Report 2015 CG Nepal Social Business Social issues faced by society are getting more complex and dynamic that they cannot be addressed solely by governments and traditional social-sector organizations. For this we have social business which is a new approach to apply business principles to address social issues in a financially sustainable manner. According to Professor Muhammad Yunus, the father of social business, it is a financially sustainable organization solely to solve social problems. Whereas, original investment may be recouped, all potential profits are reinvested to further increase the organizations social impact. Social Business is combination of an NGO and a business. It has a social objective same as an NGO and 28

33 it is financially sustainable like a business. For countries like Nepal which are highly dependent on donor funds social businesses can become the change for sustainable as well as socially fair development. With its focus on social impact and sustainability NSB believes that through creation of social business we can accelerate the development of Nepal and solve our pressing social issues. social development in Nepal. Social Business is a new development approach introduced and practised by Professor Muhammad Yunus. According to Professor Yunus, a charity dollar has one life where as social business dollar has many lives. Inspired by wise words of Prof Yunus and his achievement in Bangladesh; CG joined hands with Yunus Center on 12 December 2012 to establish social business CG has been a pioneer in industrial development activities; same legacy is now repeated for We want our society to grow with us. Together we can make a better country. One Candle should light many more candles and make this place brighter. Mr Binod K. Chaudhary, Chairman, CG 29

In that way the projects get the newest knowledge coming from colleges and universities while the students 30

35 Expert Consultation Expert Consultation get to learn more about practicalities of daily working life. Incubation - to nurture and grow entrepreneurs - is the next crucial step towards a vital Social Business community in Nepal. During incubation we groom non business individuals and groups to social business experts. We train them on various business skills while in the same time systematically link social issue into their business model. Incubation is an integrated structure of training, mentoring and experts consultation sessions. Our plan is to incubate 500 social businesses in next 5 years. Mentoring happens through a project buddy who accompanies the project from the early idea until profitable. Mentors are working closely with projects to create a good relationship and can thereby guide the entrepreneur in the best way towards an impactful as well as sustainable social business. With experts we bring the needed technical knowledge into a project such as in field, specific one to one teaching and counseling sessions by experts the project needs. Several expert consultation sessions are taken throughout the training phase and where needed even beyond this is conducted either in person or through Skype, telephone or internet. Training program incubates are given various hard and soft skills they need for running medium-scale business. The training is structured in four levels and 26 modules. 31
