Committed to Good Corporate Citizenship in China A strong commitment to good Corporate Citizenship is a core value of Siemens that is based on the recognition that the company is an integral part of China as an employer and customer as well as a good corporate citizen. The company has maintained its high level of commitment and involvement for the good of society throughout its over 140-year history in China. We are able to maximize the impact of our corporate citizenship programs and activities by drawing specifically on the core expertise of our employees and the company as a whole. This means that in addition to making monetary donations, we contribute our knowledge and experience as well as material donations in the form of suitable Siemens products and solutions. Our employees also make important contributions by taking part in volunteering activities jointly organized by Siemens and non-profit organizations. Examples of Siemens s early corporate citizenship activities in China can be traced back to 1937, when John Rabe, Siemens business representative in Nanjing and Chairman of the Nanjing International Safety Zone, provided humanitarian aid and shelter for over 250,000 Chinese refugees at Siemens offices in Nanjing during the Nanjing Massacre. Over the years, the company has been actively helping construct a harmonious society in China by engaging in a large variety of corporate citizenship activities with focus on three areas: environmental protection and conservation, scientific and technical education, and social and humanitarian assistance. These are closely interconnected. 1
Marked as the 140th anniversary of Siemens in China, the year of 2012 is also a milestone for our corporate citizenship commitment in China. In 2012, we officially launched a new corporate citizenship initiative: Siemens Employee Volunteer Association (SEVA). As a company-wide volunteerism platform, SEVA helps achieve a triple-win situation for the society, our employees, and the company by integrating our employees who are inspired to contribute to the society into various and intriguing volunteering projects and activities. More importantly, SEVA will gradually develop into an employee self-managed organization, where employee volunteers can initiate, organize, and manage their own organization and volunteering projects. Through the wide-ranging efforts of SEVA, we recognize and strengthen the continuous dedication and commitment of employee volunteers as well as their admirable spirit of service throughout Siemens. Environment Protection We at Siemens have made a clear commitment to aligning our business activities with the interests of the generations to come. With the products and solutions in our Environmental Portfolio, we intend to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions clearly the most effective measures. As a socially responsible company, Siemens meets the demands of business in an ecologically and socially sound manner. We design our working conditions in ways that safeguard our employees performance, safety, health, motivation and satisfaction, and achieve excellence for environmental protection. In China, Siemens Center Beijing has been built as a green project that is energysaving and environmental-friendly in operation to achieve sustainable development. Equipped with complete energy conservation measures such as heat recovery, free cooling and chilled beam, the Siemens Center Beijing uses 28 percent less energy than a conventional building without any energy conservation measures and accordingly reduces carbon dioxide emission by 1,200-1,600 tons annually. By 2
installing waterless urinals and a grey water system, water consumption can be reduced by 20 to 30 percent. Siemens Center Shanghai, put into operation in 2011, applied comprehensive environmental-friendly measures including high-efficiency drives for pumps and fans, collection and use of rainwater, water-saving sanitary facilities, and heat recovery and free cooling. With 30 percent less energy consumption compared with buildings constructed under GB , China s latest energy-saving standard for public buildings, the newly constructed Center is a new landmark for energy efficiency in Shanghai. The Center was also awarded the Lead in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification. By fiscal 2013 (September 30, 2013), a total of seven Siemens buildings in China have been awarded LEED certification. Apart from the Siemens Center Shanghai, the other six buildigns are Siemens Guangzhou Office, Xi an factory of Siemens Signalling Co., Ltd., Xi an, Shanghai Office of Siemens VAI Metals Technologies Co., Ltd., Shanghai, Shanghai factory phase 1 of Siemens Wind Power Blades (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Suzhou factory phase 4 of Siemens Electrical Appratus Ltd., Suzhou, and Chengdu factory phase 1 of Siemens Electronic Works Chengdu Co., Ltd. In September 2013, with the aim of fostering a greener and sustainable city and advocating a better eco-friendly green lifestyle, Siemens kicked off its first communityengaged environmental initiative Siemens Community Green Map in cooperation with local communities in Beijing and Shanghai. More than 130 volunteers from Siemens and local communities participated in the activity. This is Siemens first joint volunteering program in cooperation with the communities where Siemens offices are located. With support from Wangjing Community Office in Beijing and Jiangpu Community Office in Shanghai, volunteers from Siemens and local communities work together to make "green map" of the communities with a theme of environmental protection and sustainable development. Education & Science 3
We see education as crucial in two respects: at the individual level as a basis for a person s independence, equality of opportunity and dignity, and at the societal level as the key to social progress and increased prosperity and quality of life. Siemens is committed to the nurturing of China s future scientists and engineers through education for primary and middle schools and universities. Siemens I-Green Education Program is a shining example of our efforts in education across China to help migrant children in primary schools foster an environmentalfriendly lifestyle and integrate into urban life. Since its launch in September 2009, Siemens I-Green Education Program has been rolled out in 11 migrant children s schools in nine cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Kashgar, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Nanjing and Xi an to benefit over 17,000 students. Employee volunteers team up to visit migrant schools at their locations and increase environmental awareness among the migrant students, their families and communities in order to preserve a green, clean and healthy environment locally. In addition, the program, in collaboration with Cherished Dream, a foundation dedicated to improving children s education in China, launched the Siemens I-Green Dream Labs in five schools in China. The Dream Labs installed include standard facilities like built-in computer workstations, TV screens, whiteboards, scientific devices and a library. Siemens also equipped the Labs with Siemens Discovery Boxes and contributed the I-Green curriculum and toolkit to help the youngsters gain handson knowledge and skills about environmental protection through fun and interactive experience both in class and after school. The program is now being rolled out to other regions of the country. In February 2011, Siemens signed a memorandum on education cooperation with the Ministry of Education of China in Beijing. Siemens helps with training of engineering professionals for Chinese universities and vocational institutions to bring the latest Siemens industrial technologies to education, and to implement Siemens engineer 4
training programs, staff training system, authentication system and Siemens values Responsible, Excellent and Innovative to the educational organizations. Siemens attaches great importance to long-term cooperation relationship with Chinese universities. Since 2004, Siemens has cooperated with many Chinese universities and vocational colleges in various ways. We have signed strategic cooperation agreements with 14 well-known universities in China and established good relationships with over 200 Chinese universities and vocational colleges. Siemens helps the universities and institutions establish laboratorial centers and set up Siemens scholarships. Over 1,000 teachers are trained through activities like teachers summer camps in Germany and new-tech trainings. More than 1 million textbooks have been published in cooperation with partner colleges. Siemens has also sponsored the Siemens Cup National College Students Industrial Automation Challenge for seven years and the Chinese Numerical Control Competition for five consecutive years. Through those competitions, more than 10,000 automation and numerical control talents have been trained. Every year, Siemens holds more than 30 technology lectures and career talks at universities. Also, the company holds Siemens Day at many universities and Siemens Open Day for university teachers and students. In 2013, the company launched the Siemens Student Circle among eight universities in China. As a student club sponsored by Siemens and operated by students, the Siemens Student Circle organizes a variety of activities. The students can receive suggestions and tips on their career development and get the chances to join the Siemens Summer Camp. For the company, the Siemens Student Circle has also played a key role in employer branding and talent acquisition. In addition, Siemens has launched TOPAZ, a summer internship program for university students. Siemens provides trainings, mentoring, team work and other learning chances for the students to grow. 5
Siemens provides full-time job opportunities for fresh graduates. A large number of graduates from top Chinese universities have taken part in Siemens trainee programs including Siemens Sales Trainee Program, Siemens R&D Trainee Program, Siemens Commercial Trainee Program and Siemens Graduate Program, etc. The Center of Knowledge Interchange (CKI) program is Siemens most intensive means of collaborating with universities. In China, Siemens has built up CKI collaboration with Tsinghua University and Tongji University as strategic partners since The establishment of this long-term relationship with CKI universities is promoting the bilateral cooperation on scientific and technical exchanges and talent cultivation. Siemens has renewed the MRDA ( Master Research & Development Agreement) with both Tsinghua and Tongji in October 2012 for another five years, which leads the CKI collaboration into its second phase in China. Authorized by China Postdoctoral Management Committee, Postdoctoral Research Station has been set up in Siemens Corporate Technology China. We currently cooperate with universities to jointly cultivate post-doctors, promote cooperation in scientific researches and talent fostering. Social and Humanitarian Assistance Companies can only be successful in societies where people enjoy a certain level of prosperity. Siemens embraces its responsibility toward the Chinese society, and is committed to helping as many people as possible to gain access to essential assistance: basic healthcare, social assistance to the disadvantaged groups, and immediate technological and humanitarian assistance following natural disasters. Contributing to the development of healthcare in China and assisting those in need with donations of advanced medical equipment are a special priority for Siemens. With the support of China s Ministry of Health, Siemens launched the first pilot site in Luochuan County of Shaanxi Province in 2008 to upgrade the healthcare institutions 6
in the county to a new level of quality, symbolizing Siemens endeavor to improve the underdeveloped healthcare services in vast countryside of the country. On the occasion of China Ear-Caring Day in March 2011,2012 and 2013, Siemens donated hearing aids, worth of several millions RMB to lots of local foundations for disabled people in many provinces and municipalities to help rural and urban impoverished deaf children. In addition, Siemens also sponsored many other various activities in recent years, such as Siemens Hearing Aids Cup TV sign language competition, national painting contest for deaf children and the Ear-Caring Day public welfare concerts of national and local federations of disabled people. In order to support the sustainable development of NGOs and make professional contributions to the philanthropy cause in China, in September 2013, Siemens launched its first pro bono consulting project "NGO Growth Partner" in Beijing. Siemens employee volunteers contribute their knowledge and expertise to help NGOs define and tackle key challenges in their development. In this customized professional volunteering project, 30 volunteers from key functions and departments of Siemens provide consulting service for four NGOs to help solve their respective key challenges in fields such as management, strategy development, talent acquisition, legal issues and marketing, etc. In the area of disaster relief, Siemens offers quick and effective aid in cases of acute needs and emergencies. In May 2008, just one day after the devastating Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan Province, Siemens and its employees immediately donated cash and equipment of tele-diagnostic systems and water filters to save lives in Sichuan. Siemens also supported rebuilding of the Longfeng Red Cross Primary School in Dayi County, Sichuan Province after the earthquake and helped 22 college students, orphaned or impoverished, to accomplish their education. One year after the disaster, Siemens and its employees launched a new campaign to help rebuild the Gongyi Public Clinic in Chongzhou City of Sichuan Province. In December 2010, the 7
Gongyi Public Clinic was put into operation. In total, Siemens and its employees donated more than RMB17 million to the quake-stricken areas in Sichuan. Siemens also provided immediate technical and humanitarian assistance to help the affected people fight natural disasters, such as the Sichuan Ya an Lushan earthquake in April 2013 and the earthquake in Qinghai and the flood in Jilin in After the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, and the earthquake and tsunami in Japan most recently in 2011, Siemens launched donation-matching programs to pool the efforts of both the company and the employees worldwide to alleviate the victims from the unprecedented catastrophes. Siemens long-term commitment to corporate citizenship is widely recognized by the Chinese society. In 2013, Siemens received the 2013 Low-carbon Pioneer Award and the 2013 Best Corporate Citizen in China award from the 21st Century Business Herald newspaper and the 21st Century Business Review magazine, and the Best Green Innovation Award from the China Business newspaper and the Institute of Industrial Economics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
