1 UCD Sutherland School of Law 14th June 2018 The National Volunteer Management Conference enables and enhances volunteering through the promotion of best practice in volunteer management. This conference allows volunteer managers to spend quality time on professional development. It provides the opportunity to network with colleagues and experts in the industry as well as participate in a host of motivational and informative masterclasses. Appropriate to anyone who manages volunteers as part of their role (paid or unpaid) or anyone interested in volunteer management (C&V and Corporate Sector). Hot lunch & refreshments provided. Closing remarks from Nina Arwitz. 16:10 - End Dr. Maura Farrell Professor NUIG A lecturer in Rural Geography at NUIG, Maura s academic training is in Rural & Agricultural Geography. Her interests are specifically focused around processes of social, cultural and economic change for rural inhabitants. Maura is currently Lead Researcher with Ireland s National Rural Network, while also working on Horizon 2020 and Northern Peripheries research projects; which focus largely on rural social change and land use policy. Dr. Farrell will provide an overview of a collaborative project undertaken by NUI Galway, Volunteer Ireland, Volunteer Galway, Pat Kennedy (etownz) and the Community Knowledge Initiative (NUI Galway). Noeline Blackwell Dublin Rape Crisis Centre Noeline Blackwell is a human rights lawyer who is Chief Executive of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre which works to prevent the harm and heal the trauma of sexual violence. She has previously worked as the Director of FLAC, the Free Legal Advice Centres and as a solicitor in private practice. She is a member of the Commission on the Future of Policing. She has been a member of a number of NGO boards and of a statutory board. She currently sits on the boards of the Immigrant Council of Ireland and Front Line Defenders. 3 Mid-Morning Masterclasses Craig Dwyer Founder of ForaChange.org Craig Dwyer is the Founder of ForaChange, working with campaigns and organisations to harness digital and social media as a driver of communication, mobilisation and engagement. He was the Social Media Director for Yes Equality during the marriage equality referendum in Ireland and travelled to Australia in 2017 to work on their marriage equality campaign. Main Auditorium Digital strategy for recruiting, mobilising & organising volunteers. As Social Media Director for Yes Equality, Craig has direct experience of using digital and social media to recruit, mobilise and organise volunteers. This session will give you an insight into creating a digital strategy and the practical tips and tools you ll need to manage your volunteers in an online world. Janet Kehelly Croi na Gaillimhe Resource Centre Janet has been involved in the not-for-profit sector for nearly 30 years. Janet has set up volunteer programmes, managed volunteer teams, written volunteer resource material and delivered training. She was involved in setting up Galway Volunteer Centre and has been working in Croi na Gaillimhe Resource centre for the last 5 years and coordinates the Failte Isteach programme for people in direct provision. Room L247 The highlights, lowlights and the big bit in the middle. This workshop will give an insight into the experience of a Galway city resource centre that relies on volunteers to deliver a range of programmes to people in the community and living in direct provision. Janet will give an overview of how their volunteer programme works and the aspects that are core to making it work effectively that s the big bit in the middle. But it s the ups and downs that we all want to know about. Mary O Connor CEO Federation of Irish Sports Mary O Connor, CEO of the Federation of Irish Sport is a native of Cork and has worked in sport all her professional life. In 2016 Mary graduated from University College Cork with a Masters in Voluntary and Community Sector Management. Before joining the Federation of Irish Sport, Mary worked with the Camogie Association as Director of Technical Development & Participation. Room L248 Resourcing volunteers. The resourcing of volunteers is essential to maintaining and enticing people to become involved in your organisation. We can only expect volunteers to be actively involved if we are willing to properly resource them once recruited! The how, why, when, where and what of this is essential in an era where everyone seems to have limited time to give. In this session we will look at developing and implementing an effective strategy for resourcing your volunteers and consider what a successful resourcing looks like.
4 Afternoon Masterclasses Niamh Byrne Volunteer Ireland Niamh joined Volunteer Ireland as Programmes and Development Officer in Niamh has over 8 years experience working and volunteering within the nonprofit sector and a background managing volunteers. Niamh s role involves developing and delivering Volunteer Ireland s services in relation to volunteer management and volunteer management support. Room L247 Ten steps to effectively screen your volunteers. Screening doesn t begin and end with Garda Vetting. Screening continues through your engagement of the volunteer. This session will explore the various methods of screening volunteers. You will gain an understanding of what screening is and identify which screening tools best suit specific volunteer roles in your organisation. Emma Thomas Hancock Volunteering Matters Main Auditorium Embedding excellence in volunteer management. Emma has worked with Volunteering Matters since Initially she specialized in engaging and supporting young volunteers before moving to the consultancy team, providing 1:1 consultancy and delivering training in Volunteer Management to external organisations. Now, she is the Director of Delivery, responsible for the operation of the charity s volunteering and social action projects and programmes across the UK. This masterclass will explore the policies and processes that define excellent volunteer management across a range of volunteering projects while supporting a diverse group of volunteers and beneficiaries. The master class will include information about the journey Volunteering Matters has been on to standardize its volunteer management and work towards introducing generic volunteer management across the charity. Sharon Meaney Clare Volunteer Centre Sharon Meaney has worked in the community & voluntary sector for almost 20 years, in capacity building, training, project management, policy development, community web development & web accessibility. Sharon has been Manager of the Clare Volunteer Centre since 2008, leading on innovative projects that engage volunteers of all ages and abilities. Room L248 Good feedback is the key to Improvement. Fleadh Cheoil na héireann is the largest Irish Music & Cultural Festival in the World and relies on over 1,500 volunteers to support and run the 10 day event. Clare Volunteer Centre were tasked in 2016 & 2017 with designing a Volunteer Management Programme to recruit, select, train, support and supervise the 1,500 Fleadh Volunteers. Find out how they incorporated a structured feedback element in 2016 to inform and improve the 2017 programme using the volunteer experience to shape both the training and support elements of the programme.
5 Plenary Speakers Quality Standards Awards Nina Arwitz, CEO & Paul Collins, Outcomes & Impacts Manager - Volunteer Ireland Congratulations to the Volunteer Centre s in maintaining their quality award and embracing a culture of continuous quality improvement across the network. It is not easy to maintain any form of quality standards and with the resources available to Volunteer Centre s it is a particularly notable achievement. Investing in Volunteers Terri O Brien, Barbara Kilbride & Roseanne O Leary Terri O Brien will present Camara and Dublin Simon Community with their Investing in Volunteers Awards. Terri will also host a discussion with insights from an organisation that has completed the process and another that is still working towards achieving the award. Board Recruitment, Opportunities and Diversity: an overview of TrustIE Edwina Dewart Edwina is the Manager of Dublin City Volunteer Centre (DCVC). She is a trustee (board member) of Volunteer Ireland and Serve the City Ireland. Recently, DCVC, in partnership with the centres in Dublin, Cork and Galway have been working on a pilot project to support smaller charities to recruit voluntary trustees, whilst also seeking to encourage a new pool of volunteers to consider joining boards. E-VOC Lorraine Tansey Erasmus+ Online Training Programme; Build Lifelong learning into your volunteering programme. Lorraine Tansey is the Volunteer Programme manager at NUI Galway and co-founder of StudentVolunteer.ie Lorraine teaches in the School of Sociology on theories of volunteering.
