10 Working together to invest in the future Tauranga is becoming known as a hotbed for collaboration with enterprising groups coming together and investing significantly in innovation and cutting edge technologies. The New Zealand government is also investing strongly in Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty as a sign of its confidence in the potential of the region. WNT Ventures In 2014 a Tauranga-based consortium comprising Wharf42, Newnham Park, the Titanium Industry Development Association and Quayside Holdings became one of the government s new innovative technologyfocused incubators for high-growth, early -stage firms. WNT Ventures was one of only three proposals accepted nationwide to incubate deep-ip and complex technology drawn from New Zealand research organisations, universities, companies and individuals. Robotics Robotics Plus Ltd, the University of Auckland Plant & Food Research, and the University of Waikato secured a $7.6 million research grant from the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). This is for a four-year project to develop robotic technology which will automate a variety of horticultural tasks based on self-navigating mobile platforms. Quayside Holdings Quayside Holdings Limited is the investment arm of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council and has majority ownership of New Zealand s most profitable and productive Port, the Port of Tauranga Limited. This provides over $200 million of infrastructure funds and ongoing regional income from over $1.2 billion of investment assets. Quayside continues to seek new regional opportunities for investment with which to diversify its income base. MBIE Funding for Titanium Research MBIE awarded $14.5 million over a six year period to Tauranga-based Titanium Technologies New Zealand to research new products from titanium. This research will maintain New Zealand s global leadership in titanium technology and develop a titanium-based industry. Business and export benefits are valued by the industry at more than $100 million by 2023 and aim to achieve a one billion dollar per year titanium-based export industry before Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust (TECT) TECT is one of New Zealand s largest energy trusts. TECT s income and capital is used to provide financial benefits to consumers and the community. 11 A vibrant and contemporary city centre Tauranga is a city with heart and soul. The central business district (CBD) is compact and accessible. Significant public investment is planned for the next few years. Partnerships between private enterprise, the council and the tertiary sectors aim to provide a more vibrant and exciting city centre for the younger generation including on and off-water events, outdoor movies, markets and accessible public transport. The waterfront our jewel in the CBD crown will reap the benefits of the planned investment increasing access to the water and adding improvements to create an even more peoplefriendly space. Consortium interest has been expressed for a five star hotel and convention centre in the city centre. The evidence shows that Tauranga city centre is more economically vibrant than the centres of the comparator group. It has attracted service-sector businesses into the centre, which is increasing the density of these businesses there. (Martin Jenkins 2014) 42% GDP growth in Tauranga city centre. 2.7% per annum productivity growth in Tauranga city centre. $60m of ongoing investment in commercial developments in the Tauranga city centre. City Centre Tertiary Campus A new $85 million tertiary and research precinct is planned for development in the city centre. The new university facility will cater for up to 2000 students. It is predicted that this development alone will increase regional GDP by one percent. The new campus is predicted to generate $133 million in regional revenue and provide over 600 new jobs
12 Living the dream Tauranga is the ideal place to experience outdoor activities. Add in contemporary city facilities and it really does have the best of both worlds. A style of life I live at the Mount and can be at work in the city in 12 minutes. My staff are genuinely happy here. It s a great balance between work, outdoor living, and family.
