Kuopio region has become a centre of excellence in the field of health informatics, inspiring vibrant research and educational activities and development work done by local players and health care professionals The consortium in this area has been able to generate new innovative and user friendly ehealth applications, monitoring and diagnostic devices supporting the distribution of health care in a new holistic way

Long-standing bone research at the University of Eastern Finland has produced expertise that underlies a new, fast and economical way of diagnosing osteoporosis. The innovation has been commercialised by Bone Index Ltd, managed by Ossi Riekkinen, whose goal is to enter global markets with its ultrasound-based Bindex measuring method The Bindex device, weighing little more than 100 grams, and the computer program that analyses the results will bring osteoporosis screening within the reach of every healthcare centre and private medical centre. The procedure for both the testee and the tester is easy and fast, whereas the usual current method of diagnosing osteoporosis is a pelvic X-ray performed in a hospital.
Know Your Muscles
Myontec Ltd, managed by Pekka Tolvanen, and its top product, the Mbody smart shorts, are an excellent example of the fact that a good product is only one of the factors leading to international success Mbody is the first garment in the world that measures muscle activity. The results can be read in real time with a mobile app and saved on a computer for analysis The market is large since the product can be used in training by professional athletes as well as amateurs. The measurements are of benefit both in identifying the ideal loading levels and finding the biomechanically-correct motion paths Know Your Muscles
Kuopio University Hospital (KUH) Kuopio University Hospital is one of five university hospitals in Finland Some of the best expertise in Finnish medical and nursing science is concentrated at KUH, which works in close cooperation with top experts from the University of Eastern Finland and the Kuopio Science Park Kuopio University Hospital s vigorous scientific research activity is respected nationally and internationally. KUH is an important provider of training for physicians and other health-care personnel.

The well-developed infrastructure facilitates high-quality multidisciplinary R&D activities in the Kuopio region with particular strengths in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention on nationally important chronic diseases High-level infrastructure and methodological services are focused on supporting translational research, where studying dynamic biological processes in intact study subjects by repeated measurements is needed, for unraveling of disease mechanisms and monitoring effectiveness of various therapies [video]

The Emergency Services College provides education and training in its special field under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior The Research and Development Unit s fields of research are amongst others accident prevention, fire research and dangerous substances, the application of information technology, environmental risks and human behavior in accidents [video]

The Crisis Management Centre Finland (CMC Finland), located in Kuopio, is a governmental institution and a centre of expertise in civilian crisis management The main tasks of CMC Finland are to train and recruit experts for international civilian crisis management and peacebuilding missions as well as conduct research focusing on civilian crisis management CMC Finland acts as a national head office for all seconded Finnish civilian crisis management professionals [video]

Most of the practical training is conducted on the 38-hectar-wide training ground. There are different kinds of training fields, specialpurpose buildings and class rooms there. The students train in conditions as close as possible to real emergencies, for example, to extinguish various kinds of fires, to carry out rescue assignments, prevent chemical accidents, driving emergency vehicles as well as giving first aid to injured and ill patients. The training ground is also used for joint disaster exercises of the authorities. The training ground has been designed to minimize the effects on the environment. It can also be used by organisations arranging safety training.
It s all about collaboration and co-creation

Gamification in health promotion is all about the games cited characteristics and applications of the technologies to promote health by emphasising the prevention of diseases, affecting the lifestyle changes and self-care Games for Health supports entrepreneurship, rapid technological experiments and organises activating events Kuopio Innovation is coordinating Games for Health Finland. [products][jamvideo1] [jamvideo2] [video3]

Jukka Sormunen, an entrepreneur and the Principal of Klassikka upper seconday high school in Kuopio, is developing health-promoting ActionTrack playing fields for schools at iclass Finland Education Network Ltd. Through the exercise- and health-oriented playing fields, support can be provided for the educational partnership between home and school. Through a game, pupils are guided to, say, brush their teeth. Parents can monitor the game, confirming on the game platform, with a mobile device, that the teeth have been brushed. In this way, interaction in a young person s education takes place through modern terminal devices, and responsibility is not left to the old civics classes.

Heli Vehkala, the Project Manager at Neuron, the Finnish Brain Research and Rehabilitation Centre, thinks that current terminal devices hold enormous business potential. Public and private healthcare services will not be able to cope with future pressures. There is a global need for different kinds of telerehabilitation and telecare models. Gamification, the application of games for health promotion and maintenance, will save money on many counts. An individual s functional capacity will improve with smaller personnel resources than today. Increasing well-being will save society money.
