1 SOUTH DAKOTA BOARD OF REGENTS Full Board AGENDA ITEM: 9 DATE: December -3, 0 ****************************************************************************** SUBJECT: Pearson MyLabs Update A few years ago the Regental System initiated a redesigned approach to the delivery of remedial math using Pearson s MyMathLab as the foundation. An overview of this project was provided to the Board in October of 00 (Agenda Item I-F, Committee on Academic and Student Affairs, October 3-4, 00). A series of reports have been provided to the Board as this effort has unfolded. At that time, it was noted that South Dakota was a participant in a number of national initiatives to increase the number of citizens holding a postsecondary credential. This system level commitment continues as best exemplified with the current participation with Complete College America. While the efforts initiated in 009 focused primarily on math remediation, this fall the campuses have been engaged in work in composition, reading and study skills as well as in math. As a starting point for the work in 009, math faculty in South Dakota were aware that a number of campuses and systems have used a product from Pearson Education, MyMathLab, to significantly improve student success in remedial and entry level math courses. In fact, all campuses had some faculty/students using this product. In addition, Pearson has significant experience formatting this into a modular approach to remediation, a commonly used strategy. Finally, Pearson had recently brought out MyLabsPlus which offered reporting that allows math faculty and administrators the ability to identify areas where students are struggling and to refine instructional strategies being used. For these and for other related reasons, the system entered into a contract with Pearson Education to develop a customized version of MyMathLab that would be specific to the Basic Algebra (MATH 0) and Intermediate Algebra (MATH 0) courses being taught in South Dakota. This step was taken to provide students with materials that have demonstrated success while controlling costs. The campuses are still committed to using this product primarily because the approaches it supports are proving to be successful. In fact, several have even changed to a lab-based (emporium) delivery strategy that is a nationally accepted best practice. While most of those using the product agree that there could be some improvements, the majority of math faculty agree this should be extended. Finally, the system level agreement did provide for significant savings for students on all campuses. For these reasons, a new contract is being negotiated. As this contract is approached, it has been noted that the use of Pearson s MyLabs in other disciplines is rapidly expanding and in many cases, these are bundled with a related e-text. In fact, the system office has been monitoring faculty adoption of MyLabs products over the years and the growth rate has been 5-0%/year. A summary of the sales from last year shows there were approximately 5,000 MyLabs sold this past year within the system. A report is attached. Since this growth has occurred, the contract is being negotiated to extend the preferred pricing students in any section required to by a MyLabs/e-text bundle. As the Board is aware, the system has established a small grants program to support saleable pilot projects addressing some aspect of placement and remediation. Almost every one of the proposals included the use of a Pearson s MyLab product. As noted above, these decisions were made by the faculty primarily because of the reputation of these products. These items will also be covered by the contract being negotiated. Dr. Kurt Cogswell, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at SDSU, will make a brief presentation about SDSU s experiences with and commitment to MyMathLabPlus.
