1 Adjudicator Biographies Grand National Championships at Indianapolis November 13-15, 2014 Lucas Oil Stadium Indianapolis, IN 2014 FALL CHAMPIONSHIPS MUSIC PANEL (alphabetical by last name) George Boulden, Richmond, KY Mr. George Boulden is the Associate Director of Bands at the University of Kentucky where he serves as the conductor of the Symphony Band, teaches conducting, instructs in applications of music technology and teaches the instrumental music education seminar. Previously, Mr. Boulden served as the Director of the Wildcat Marching Band and Basketball Pep Band from He taught public school for nine years in South Carolina and Florida before joining the faculty of the school of music at UK in He has served as an adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor throughout the United States and Canada. Mr. Boulden also serves as editor of the Kentucky Music Educators Association state music education journal, the Bluegrass Music News, and was most recently honored as the recipient of the 2011 KMEA College/University Teacher of the Year award. In February of 2014 Mr. Boulden received the Outstanding Bandmaster Award from the Psi Chapter of Phi Beta Mu, international bandmasters fraternity. Mr. Boulden resides in Richmond with his wife, Shelly, and daughters, Jenna and Julianna, and son, Jonah. Their oldest son, Bob, is a student at the University of Kentucky. Levi Chavis, San Antonio, TX Mr. Levi Chavis is the Director of Bands at Ronald Reagan High School in San Antonio, TX. Under his direction, the Ronald Reagan High School Wind Ensemble was named a TMEA Honor Band state finalist in 2010 and 2014 and in 2011 they performed at the Music for All Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, In. The Ronald Reagan High School Marching Band has been a UIL Texas State Marching Contest Finalist, a Bands of America Regional Class Champion, and most recently was named a Bands of America Grand National Finalist in Mr. Chavis graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Houston. Mr. Chavis served on the instructional staff with The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps ( ) and the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps ( ). He is an active adjudicator for Bands of America and UIL. His professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association and Texas Bandmasters Association. Mr. Chavis currently resides in San Antonio with his wife Amanda, a professional flutist. Chip Crotts, Acworth, GA Dr. Chip Crotts serves as Director of Jazz Studies and Assistant Director of Bands at Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, GA. Previously, Chip served on the faculties of Samford University, Jacksonville State University and The University of Texas at Austin. A GRAMMY nominated trumpet player, Chip has toured and performed with international artists such as Boston Brass, Rhythm and Brass, The Temptations, Natalie Cole, Ray Charles, The Manhattan Transfer, Maynard Ferguson, among others. Crotts received his undergraduate degree from East Carolina University, a Masters of Music in Orchestral Performance from Penn State University, as well as the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Trumpet Performance with a Jazz Emphasis from the University of Texas-Austin. Highly involved in the marching arts and drum corps, Dr. Crotts has served as a brass instructor with Spirit of Atlanta, Phantom Regiment, Blue Devils and The Cavaliers. Chip is very active as a clinician and adjudicator and serves in this capacity with organizations such as Bands of America, Drum Corps International, and numerous state and national music educator associations. Wayne Dillon, Springfield, NJ Mr. Wayne Dillon is currently the Director of Bands at the Upper Academy High School in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Mr. Dillon holds a master s degree in jazz performance from The University of Miami, Florida and completed honors fine arts and education degrees from York University in Toronto, Canada. In 2008, Mr. Dillon was awarded the State of New Jersey Governor s teacher recognition award for his work with the music program at Elizabeth High School. He is an active performer and recording artist, an adjudicator for Drum Corps International and has judged the national championships for both Bands of America and DCI more than 21 years. Mr. Dillon has served as the brass Page 1 of 6

2 caption head with the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps, on the staff of the nine-time world champion Cadets of Bergen County and the US Army All American Marching Band. Glenn Fugett, Arlington, TX Mr. Glenn Fugett is currently the Head Band Director at Legacy High School in Mansfield, Texas, a position he s held since the school opened in August of He has also served as the Associate Director of Bands at Westlake High School in Austin and as Head Band Director at Calallen Middle School in Corpus Christi. Ensembles under Fugett have won numerous awards throughout the United States, performing at events such as Bands of America Regional Marching Championships; the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California; the 4a UIL State Marching Band Contest; the 4a Texas State Honor Band Competition; the South Coast Music Festival; the American Bandmasters Association Convention in Dallas, Texas; and the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Fugett is an artist with Yamaha and Vic Firth as well as a sought-after clinician, and has been a Music for All Summer Symposium clinician for the last eight years. Additionally, he is a long-standing judge for Bands of America and Drum Corps International. Fugett was Percussion Caption Head for DCI for five years, and this year will serve as Music Judge Liaison. He is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association and the Percussive Arts Society. Allan Kristensen, Clovis, CA Mr. Allan E. Kristensen is the Visual and Performing Arts Manager for the Fresno Unified School District where he works to provide all arts teachers with the support to develop a successful, standard based, vertically aligned program with all students that wish to be involved. Prior to coming to Fresno Unified, Mr. Kristensen was the Music Coordinator and an Elementary Vice Principal in Madera Unified, a music teacher in the Clovis Unified School District, serving as Band Director at both Clovis West and Clovis High Schools. He also served eight years as the Percussion Director with the Bulldog Marching Band during the years with CUSD. His career began in the state of Oregon, teaching the band program at Centennial High School in Portland, and Grants Pass High School. Kristensen earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from San Jose State University where he studied percussion and also holds a Master's Degree in Educational Administration. He has performed with the San Jose Symphony, Nova Vista Symphony, the Oakland Symphony, and the Fresno Philharmonic as well as marched and taught the World Champion Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps. Mr. Kristensen has become a highly recognized music adjudicator and clinician world-wide, having judged both the Bands of America Nationals and the DCI World Championships as well as teaching, writing and judging in Great Britain, Japan and Canada. He is married to Kim Fox-Kristensen and they have a daughter named Ryann. During his free time, he can be found on a golf course attempting to look as good as his 16 handicap. Jarrett Lipman, San Antonio, TX Mr. Jarrett Lipman is the Director of Bands at Claudia Taylor Lady Bird Johnson High School in San Antonio, Texas. He is currently on the Brass Staff at The Cadets Drum Corps of Allentown, PA where he instructs the Baritones, and also served as the Assistant Corps Director of the Crossmen Drum Corps of San Antonio, TX in At Johnson High School, Lipman directs the Marching Band, co-conducts the Wind Ensemble with Alan Sharps, and assists with the Symphony Band, Concert Bands, and Jazz Ensembles. The Claudia Taylor Johnson High School Marching Band advanced to the 2010 and 2012 UIL State Marching Contest, and was named a State finalist in Since 2010, the band has been a consistent Bands of America Regional and Super Regional Finalist, and was named a Bands of America Grand Nationals Finalist in 2011, where the group placed 8th overall. The Claudia Taylor Johnson High School Wind Ensemble advanced to the TMEA State Honor Band Contest in 2012 and 2014, and placed 5th overall in The Wind Ensemble and Symphony Bands at Johnson have earned exclusively Sweepstakes ratings since the school opened in Lipman graduated with dual degrees in Music Education and Euphonium Performance from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. Throughout his undergraduate studies, Lipman performed on euphonium with the Rutgers University Wind Ensemble and the Eastern Winds of Ewing, New Jersey. From , Lipman performed as a euphonium player with the San Antonio Wind Symphony of San Antonio, Texas. In 2014, Lipman was selected as the Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity Texas Chapter's Outstanding Young Bandmaster. Van Mathews, North Richland Hills, TX Mr. Van Matthews is the Director of Bands at L.D. Bell High School in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District. During his tenure, the L.D. Bell Band Blue Raider Band has been named Bands of America Regional Page 2 of 6

3 Champions in 2008, 2009, and 2010, Bands of America San Antonio Super Regional Champions in 2008, 2009, and 2011, Texas UIL AAAAA State Marching Contest Silver Medalist in 2008 and 2010, Bronze Medalist in 2012 and has been a finalist 5 times at the Bands of America Grand National Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana finishing in the top 3 in 2008, 2009, and Mr. Mathews concert ensembles consistently receive the highest ratings at the U.I.L. Concert and Sight-reading Contest. Prior to joining the L.D. Bell staff in 2008, Mr. Mathews taught at Haltom High School, Lewisville High School and Lake Highlands High School. From , Mr. Mathews served as a member of the brass staff for the 16-time Drum Corps International World Champion Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps and was the brass caption coordinator/a member of the instructional staff with the Madison Scouts from Matthews began performing in 1984 with the Suncoast Sound Drum & Bugle Corps and aged out as a member of the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps. Mr. Mathews received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of South Carolina and his Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois. While at the University of Illinois, he completed all course work for the Ed. D. in Music Education. Matthews is an adjudicator for Bands of America as well as numerous local and national marching band contests. His professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Gamma Beta Phi. He lives in North Richland Hills, Texas with his patient and loving wife, Brenda, daughter Gabriella and son Derek. John Phillips, Markham, ONT, Canada Mr. John Phillips maintains an active schedule as an adjudicator and clinician throughout the world. In addition to judging for Bands of America, he has adjudicated in Japan, Malaysia, Europe, South America and North America. Phillips has served as the Judge Administrator for Drum Corps International for the past 15 years. Phillips is an assistant professor at the University of Western Ontario where he conducts the Symphonic Band and teaches in both the Faculties of Music and Education. Prior to teaching at Western, he served as the Arts curriculum supervisor at the Ministry of Education for Ontario and Principal of music teacher training programs at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Phillips was a member of the NAfME Blue Ribbon Panel on marching music standards, and serves as chair of the DCI Marching Music Academy. In 2010, he received the MENC award for Excellence in Marching Music Education. Drew Shanefield, Drexel Hill, PA Dr. Andrew Shanefield serves as both an instrumental music teacher for the School District of Haverford Township and as a faculty member in the Department of Music and Dance at Swarthmore College. Shanefield received his Bachelor s in Music from New York University, his Master s in Music Education from Queens College, a Master s in Music Performance from West Chester University and a Doctorate in Higher Education from Widener University. Shanefield is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and is a performing artist/clinician for Yamaha band instruments. For the past six seasons, Shanefield has been the brass composer and arranger for the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. Previously, he has served in similar positions for the Cavaliers, Bluecoats, Cadets, Carolina Crown and Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps. Bill Watson, Lewisville, TX Mr. Bill Watson is currently the Director of Fine Arts for the Lewisville Independent School District, located in Denton County just north of the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. He is also in his tenth year as a member of the brass staff for the Concord Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps. Mr. Watson served 30 years as a band director in Texas, working in the Spring and Birdville School Districts at both the middle school and high school level. Mr. Watson has been fortunate to work with marching organizations that have received numerous awards, including several Bands of America Regional and Class Championships, 5 Texas UIL State Marching Championships, the 1993 Bands of America Grand National Championship, and 7 DCI World Championships. Greg Williams, Acworth, GA Mr. Greg Williams is currently in his 29 th year as a music educator in Cobb County, Georgia. Mr. Williams holds a Bachelor s and Master s in Music Education from Jacksonville University where he served as drum major of the JSU Marching Southerners. Williams professional honors include receiving the National Band Association Citation National Presenting Sponsor of Excellence in 2006, 2009 and 2012, and being recognized twice as Teacher of the Year. In addition to Bands of America, he was on staff for the 2006 Macy s Great American Marching Band, is an active judge for Drum Corps International and a certified GMEA judge. Williams is a member of GMEA, NAFME, NBA and Phi Beta Mu-International Bandmasters Fraternity. Page 3 of 6

4 VISUAL PANEL (alphabetical by last name) Lee Carlson, Palm Springs, CA Mr. Lee Carlson has been involved in the pageantry arts for more than 40 years. Carlson has spent the last 33 years as the drill designer and color guard instructor for the University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band. He judges for Bands of America, Drum Corps International and many Winter Guard Circuits across the United States and has served four years as Visual Caption Head for DCI and currently is the Judges Training Coordinator. Carlson has judged in Europe and Asia and has adjudicated the Drum Corps Japan Championships seven times. He has written for and taught many mass bands including the opening of the Los Angles Olympics, Centennial of the Statue of Liberty, and the Bicentennial of the French Revolution and the Centennial of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Carlson owns and operates a pottery studio in Palm Springs, CA. Curtis Costanza, Vancouver, WA Curtis Costanza is a middle school teacher in Battle Ground, Washington. He has extensive judging experience with Drum Corps International, Winter Guard International, Bands of America, Winter Guard Association of Southern California, Florida Federation Color Guard Circuit, and is the current judges coordinator for WGI and the Northwest Association for Performing Arts. His pageantry experience includes work as a consultant, designer and instructor for various high school marching bands and color guards throughout the country for the past twenty-five years. Mr. Costanza has been a clinician for Northwest Pageantry Association, Western Carolina University, North Texas Color Guard Circuit, Gulf Coast Color Guard Circuit, Southeast Color Guard Circuit, Florida Federation Color Guard Circuit, Northwest Marching Band Circuit, Colorado Band Masters Association, Winter Guard Association of Southern California, Drum Corps Japan and Bands of America. In addition to judging and teaching, Mr. Costanza enjoys traveling with his friends and family. Shirley Dorritie, Knightsen, CA Ms. Shirley Stratton Dorritie has been involved in the pageantry activity for more than 40 years and specializes in training performers throughout the world for optimal achievement. Shirley holds an MA in Counseling Psychology, with a Certificate in Sport Psychology. Shirley is a performance coach, instructor and visual designer and has worked for DCI for many years. Her credits include Drum Corps International s Best Color Guard award, four DCI World Championship titles with The Blue Devils, as well as the Santa Clara Vanguard and the Academy Drum & Bugle Corps. Shirley has adjudicated the competitive Winter Color Guard and Marching Band activities since 1983 and joined the WGI judging roster in She is a 2009 inductee into the prestigious Drum Corps International Hall of Fame. John Howell, North Huntingdon, PA Mr. John Howell resides in North Huntingdon Pennsylvania just outside of Pittsburgh. Mr. Howell is currently employed as a Business Education Teacher in the Hempfield Area School District where he teaches Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Web Page Design and Video Game Programming. Mr. Howell holds a Bachelor of Administration in Business Management and an Accounting minor from the University of Pittsburgh and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He is a visual designer and has taught and written shows for various nationally acclaimed marching bands, drum and bugle corps and indoor winter color guards and continues to conduct clinics and consultations for bands, winter color guards, and judging associations across the United States. Mr. Howell has been a visual adjudicator more than 25 years and judges for BOA, DCI, WGI and various other judging associations and has had the opportunity to judge internationally on numerous occasions. He also conducts both the Trinity Handbell and Hand Chime choirs at his church in which he has performed for more than 36 years. Kyle Miller, Henderson, NV Mr. Kyle Miller currently teaches at Paradise Elementary, a professional development school partnered with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His initiation to performing arts began in his father's marching bands, the Crown Imperials & Dundee Scots. Miller studied music while at University of Iowa and eventually culminated his performance career as a member of Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps. Shifting his focus from performance, he gained valuable experience designing shows in the Chicago-land area. Later, Miller began judging as a member of the Midwest Judges Guild. Mr. Miller continues to maintain his affiliation with the Guild, while now judging various state, Page 4 of 6

5 national, and international competitions. Miller currently judges for Drum Corps International, Winter Guard International, and Bands of America. Randy Nelson, Honolulu, HI Mr. Randy Nelson was Director of Bands at Choctawhatchee High School in Fort Walton Beach, FL for 26 years. During this time, the Choctawhatchee Winter Guards were WGI World Championship finalists 27 times and the Choctawhatchee Style Marchers were FMBC Class 5A State Champions 4 times. Mr. Nelson served as a member of the WGI Executive Board for 15 consecutive years and was President for nine years. Mr. Nelson is currently designing for The University of Alabama, The University of North Alabama and high schools across the country. Mr. Nelson is a member of the WGI Hall of Fame, a lifetime member of the Florida Bandmasters Association, National Association for Music Education and the Gulf Coast Judges Association. He has served as a judge for numerous color guard circuits, DCI, BOA and marching band festivals and contests in over 20 states. Mr. Nelson is a freelance designer for marching bands, drum and bugle corps, winter color guards and winter percussion ensembles. Tim Ochran, Tyler, TX Mr. Tim Ochran has been active in the marching music activity as a performer, instructor, designer, clinician and judge for nearly 40 years. He has had the privilege to judge for Bands of America since Mr. Ochran served as the Visual Judge coordinator for Drum Corps International, and has been selected to be part of the DCI World Championship judging panel over 10 times. He was also selected to be on the finals judging panel over five times. Away from marching music, Mr. Ochran is a licensed and American Board of Radiology certified Medical Physicist. Bob Thomas, Greensburg, PA Mr. Bob Thomas adjudicating experiences has ranged from DCI, WGI, Drum Corp Midwest, Drum Corp Atlantic, ISSMA, Bands of America, Drum Corp Europe, YEA, Ohio Judges Association, Florida Federation of Judges, AIA, Pennsylvania Federation of Judges and Marching in Okayama, Japan, and DCA. In 2008 and 2009 he judged the World Marching Band Championships in Malaysia. He judged the 2009 thru 2011 Thailand Drum Line Competition. Recently, he returned from South East Asia where he taught the DCE Judges College for their DCE license partner World Band Championships. Mr. Thomas has been a clinician for a vast number of color guard circuits around the country and world. He is currently the Director of Education for the AIA indoor color guard association and also has been the Director of Education for Drum Corp Europe for the past 10 years. He designed the current scoring system for Drum Corp Europe and South East Asia, which is currently being used in 16 countries. Michael Turner, San Francisco, CA Mr. Michael Turner has spent the better part of his career involved in pageantry arts. Beginning in high school band, he then became a marching member of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. Trained in ballet, jazz and modem dance, Mr. Turner was one of the early color guard pioneers to introduce dance and movement to the marching arena. While in Madison, he performed extensively with Kanopy Dance Theatre, PresenTense, Children's Theatre of Madison, Madison Opera and Ballet Madison. With such a diversified background, Mr. Turner developed an artistically strong and original teaching style. For 18 years, Michael worked with the two-time Word Champion Madison Scouts, serving as color guard choreographer and visual coordinator. In the Bay Area, Mr. Turner served as dance master and choreographer for the six time World Champion Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps. Performing with Mindance San Francisco and artists of the San Francisco Ballet, he still studies, coaches and choreographs. Mr. Turner conducts color guard training sessions and master dance classes throughout the United States, Canada, Middle East, Europe, Japan and Thailand. Michael was the Operations Manager for San Francisco Chanticleer, the famous all male a capella vocal ensemble. Prior to Chanticleer, Michael was tour manager for the National tour of GREASE, starring Cindy Williams and Eddie Mekka. Mr. Turner was the General Manager for BDEntertainment, bringing pageantry arts into corporate America through trade shows, conventions and events and is currently a special event freelancer. Mr. Turner has judged for Winter Guard International, Bands of America, Drum Corps International and continues freelance judging for marching bands, drum corps and color guard throughout the world. CHIEF JUDGE Gary Markham, Dallas, GA Page 5 of 6

6 Mr. Gary Markham is the Senior Educational Consultant and Chief Judge for Music for All. Mr. Markham retired as the Supervisor of Instrumental Music for the Cobb County School District in Marietta, GA. He has more than four decades of experience in music education and serves internationally as clinician, guest conductor, adjudicator and consultant. The Cobb County Music Program has been named one of the Best 100 Communities for Music Education in America 10 times. Mr. Markham received his bachelor s degree from Mansfield State University, master s degree of education from Penn State University and studied for a Ph. D (ABD) in conducting and music supervision at George Mason University with Tony Maiello and Arnald Gabriel. Mr. Markham works internationally as a clinician, guest conductor, adjudicator and consultant. He currently serves on several Metro Atlanta Arts Boards, the Drum Corps International (DCI) Rules and Systems Taskforce, and the Advisory Committee for the Midwest Clinic.
