It is a privilege to be part of an extraordinary learning community which consists of highly qualified staff members and dedicated students. Miami Beach Adult & Community Education Center is a partnership, between dedicated MDCPS employees and distinguished members of the community. It is designed to create the educational opportunities that best fit the needs of our student population. Miami Beach Adult & Community Education Center has tailored the course offerings with a consideration of the professionalism and expertise of our faculty and staff. It is the ideal pathway to promote growth within the community, leading to a successful future for all our graduates. Our programs at Miami Beach Adult & Community Education Center include English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), high school completion, Adult Basic Education, and Early Childhood Education. Faculty Policies TEACHER CERTIFICATION As a condition of instructional employment, it is the responsibility of each teacher to keep his/her certificate current. Certification requirements are set by the State of Florida and changed periodically by the legislature. Please ensure that Mr. Hicham Moujahid, Office Manager has a copy of your current certificate on file. Expired certificates will result in the instructor's removal from the classroom and the payroll. 8

9 SIGN -IN PROCEDURES In order to ensure accurate payroll reporting you must sign-in upon arrival and sign-out at the end of your shift each day in the main office. Failure to follow the prescribed procedures could result in loss of pay. For all instructional staff, please adhere to the clock-in/clock-out schedule: Do not clock-in or clock-out early. Instructors should clock-in and begin instruction promptly at the designated class time. Instructors with both afternoon and evening classes will not be paid for the time in between their classes. During testing at the end of a term, if you have no students and you are not delivering planned instruction, please see an administrator before you sign out. BREAKS AND GUIDELINES All non-instructional part-time employees who work five hours per day shall be allowed one 15-minute daily break. ADHERENCE TO WORK SCHEDUELS DO NOT alter your assigned work schedule for any reason. Only school administration may assign or alter an employee s work schedule. STAFF ABSENCE POLICY Maintaining good attendance and punctuality are conditions of your employment. It is expected that you will attend work each day and be on time. If you anticipate that you are going to be absent: Complete the online Leave Request Form at Click Employee Resources Tab Click Log-In Credentials: o Username: 7202 o Password: 7202 Click I m not a robot and follow specific directions. If you are not able to access the online Leave Request Form, please contact the substitute locator at Fienberg/Fisher K-8, Mr. Hicham Moujahid (786) Satellite location employees should also contact your respective administrator. If you arrive late to work, please notify the administrator immediately upon your arrival. POLICY FOR LEAVING CAMPUS 1. If you must leave campus for any reason, contact your coordinator and an administrator for approval and coverage prior to leaving. 2. Make certain you Sign-out in the Main Office prior to leaving. 9

10 3. When possible, please schedule all medical and/or personal appointments during your personal time. STAFF DRESS EXPECTATIONS Dress in professional attire that is a positive example to the students. All custodians and security monitors must wear the prescribed uniform. School ID is required. MINOR CHILDREN IN THE WORKPLACE Your job involves a high degree of professionalism, which requires you to concentrate all of your efforts on assigned duties, the students, and the patrons. Please refrain from bringing your minor children or relatives to the work place as a means of childcare or lack thereof. To utilize the schools childcare program, employees must register their child for the school s childcare program. In addition, they must fill out the required registration form and pay the insurance fee prior to entering childcare. CLASSROOM EXPECTATION All instructors are expected to arrive to their class on time. Student learning should begin promptly and continue throughout the entire class period. Do not alter your scheduled class time. Do not release your students early for any reason. Do not leave your class unattended during instructional time. Do not allow students to wander the hallways. No food or drinks in class LESSON PLANS AND EMERGENCY LESSON PLANS In striving to maintain a high level of educational excellence, we expect teachers to have meaningful lesson plans that keep students engaged in the learning process the entire class period. The lesson plan should be consistent with the curriculum objectives designated for the specific course. A well-prepared lesson plan includes instructional objectives, meaningful activities, and methods of assessments is required during for each class. Instructors should have a weekly lesson plan that incorporates individual daily lessons for each class meeting; as well as, daily learning objectives. Furthermore, lesson plans should be kept neatly in a binder that is readily available for viewing. Please ensure that your daily lesson plan encompasses instruction for the entire class period. Make certain your Administrator/coordinator has a copy of (1) week of emergency lesson plans on file no later than the 1 st day of each trimester. 11 PERSONAL EMERGENCIES If you have an emergency during class and need to leave the building, notify a coordinator or an administrator immediately for approval and appropriate coverage prior to leaving campus. VACATION: Please submit request for vacation with completed leave card, at least 1 week in advance of requested date. Vacation days are approved by Ms. Osborne, Principal or designee. For the essential operation of the school, certain blackout days will not be approved. Please plan accordingly. DENTAL/MEDICAL EXAMINATION LEAVE: Principals or supervising administrators may release unit employees for up to two hours without sick leave being charged against the employee for the purpose of medical and/or dental examination and if deemed necessary, with verification upon return. o Dr. Gutierrez, Assistant Principal will approve P.A.L., Fienberg/Fisher K-8, Biscayne Elementary and Miami Beach Senior High. o Mr. Styles, Assistant Principal will approve Treasure Island Elementary, North Shore Activity, and North Miami Beach Senior High. PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT All persons employed by the School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida, are representatives of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. As such they are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will reflect credit upon them and the school system. Unsuitable conduct or the use of abusive, sarcastic, and/or profane language in the presence of students is expressly prohibited. REPORTING STUDENT ACCIDENTS/INJURIES/ILLNESSES ACCIDENTS -- in case of serious or extensive injury, the teacher, to whom the student is assigned, shall follow these procedures: 1. Do NOT move the injured person. 2. Notify the main office/administrator by the most expedient and practical method possible. 3. Let the administrator know the injured person's name and in which classroom or area the student is located. Describe the extent of the injury. 4. An accident report must be filed with the main office for all accidents. The teacher in charge or the one who witnessed the accident must complete this form immediately after the accident has occurred. 11

12 INJURIES/ILLNESS All injuries or accidents, whether to employees or students, which occur during working hours, are to be reported immediately to an administrator. Proper medical attention will be provided, accompanied by the necessary paperwork that will then be initiated to record the injury or illness. It is important to remember that if an injury or illness is not reported on a timely manner. PARKING - Miami Beach Adult & Community Education Fienberg Fisher Students who wish to park their cars on school grounds must go to the Main Office to be issued a parking permit. Students are prohibited from parking their cars in the Faculty Parking lot/area. Students should not block driveways or other parked cars. Any student whose car is wed for illegal parking is responsible to pay their own towing charge. All other locations, please speak to the designated administrator at the school site for parking instructions. SMOKE FREE CAMPUS VISITORS Smoking is prohibited on every M-DCPS school campus (School Board Rule 6Gx ) and the Miami Beach Adult Education Center is officially designated as a Tobacco- Free Work Place. The school s campus is considered private property. Visitors are required to check in with the security monitor at the school s front entrance, sign the visitors log, and receive a visitor s badge. There is no exception to this rule. Visitors are not allowed in classroom without administrative approval. Classroom Procedures Student Attendance Expectations and Procedures The recording of daily student attendance is extremely important, and the maintenance of accurate attendance is a condition of employment. State laws and regulations control the administration of student attendance in the Miami-Dade County Public School system. Inaccurate or altered attendance reports could result in serious legal consequences. Therefore, please maintain and submit accurate attendance records daily through the FOCUS online grade book, ensure accuracy, and take this policy seriously. Any supplementary rules and procedures put into effect in the school system must be consistent with State Laws and Rules. Instructors must consistently reinforce attendance expectations and encourage students to come to school daily and on time. It is imperative that teachers refer students to the coordinator as soon as an attendance problem arises. Please observe the following procedures when utilizing the electronic grade book attendance: 12

13 1. Attendance MUST BE recorded at each class meeting. 2. If a student is absent, the attendance should be recorded as A for absent. If a student is present, the attendance should be recorded as hours. The actual time of attendance is recorded that a student is present in class. For example -- if a student attends for an hour and a half, of a three-hour class, he/she receives 1.5 hours attendance. 3. If a student has never attended your class an N (no show) should appear for 3 consecutive days and then a W on the fourth day. N, N, N, W after the fourth day leave it blank after the W. 4. W (withdrawal for non-attendance without notification), upon the 6 th consecutive absences the student is withdrawn for non-attendance without notification. Continue marking your attendance as follows A,A,A,A,A,A until student is dropped from your class. 5. If a student returns to class after they have been withdrawn for non-attendance, Student MUST see the Registration Office to re-enroll prior to entering class. 6. If a student is withdrawn by the administration for disciplinary reasons, do not allow them to re-enter your class unless they have written clearance from the site administrator. Recording daily attendance is the obligation of each classroom instructor. If you have questions related to student attendance procedures, please see the gradebook manager for assistance. STUDENT TEXTBOOKS Every student must purchase the required textbooks from the school s bookstore. Be certain that the students know the exact titles of the book to be purchased. Please see your coordinator to obtain the appropriate book purchase form. Book purchases are CASH or CREDIT and NO REFUNDS for book purchases. STUDENT ID S All students must purchase an ID badge upon registration and enter the campus with a current issued school ID badge. Students without an ID should be sent to the appropriate office for a duplicate ID. Replacement or Lost ID fee is $5.00 CLASSROOM MEDIA USE of VIDEOS The use of video-based instruction and media must directly support your planned lesson. All video/media content must be suitable for student viewing and used as an additional resource for instruction. All media must confirm with M-DCPS Acceptable Use Policy 13

14 FOOD IN THE CLASSROOM Eating or drinking in classrooms is prohibited. Celebrations are permitted only in the Panda Center or in the specially designated areas with prior administrative approval. Students and teachers must discard their own trash. CLASSROOM MAINTENANCE The classrooms must be maintained for use by other classes. Teachers are asked to assist in the following ways: 1. If you rearrange the furniture in your classroom, please be sure that it is returned to its original position at the end of the class. Erase all boards that you have used before leaving the room at the end of your class. 2. Do Not erase material that was left by the day school teacher. 3. Make sure to turn off the lights at the end of the evening. 4. Do Not leave students unattended in the classroom. 5. Do Not leave your materials in the classroom unless you have a locked cabinet. 6. Always leave your classroom in a better condition than when you entered. If you repeatedly find your room in an unacceptable condition, report it to an administrator. CUSTODIAL REQUESTS 1. All questions concerning custodial procedures or maintenance should be directed to the designated site administrator. 2. No staff member, except the head custodian, or an administrator should direct members of the custodial staff to carry out custodial functions. COMPUTER /TECHNICAL ISSUES If you are experiencing are any technical difficulties, please submit a HEAT ticket. STUDENT DISCIPLINE AND THE STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT All adult centers are governed by a M-DCPS Post-Secondary Code of Student Conduct. The purpose of the Code of Student Conduct is to assist students, parents, teachers, and administrators in promoting and maintaining a positive instructional environment. Classroom discipline is the responsibility of each instructor. Challenging classroom activities and engaging students in meaningful lessons will curtail discipline problems and disruptive behaviors. However, occasionally, there may be student disciplinary infractions that require the attention of a coordinator or school administrator. The Codes of Conduct are available for review online at the M-DCPS website ( or you may obtain a copy directly from the main office. 14

15 TIPS FOR GOOD CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE Each instructor is responsible for maintaining an atmosphere that is conducive to the learning. Any person who creates a situation that interferes with normal class progress may be removed from the class. Disturbances in the classrooms and hallways are not tolerated. If your primary disciplinary efforts are not successful and a student must be removed from class, contact the security monitor, coordinator, or an administrator. Tips for good classroom discipline include: a. Be sure everyone knows your class rules from the start of the class. Enforce them fairly and consistently. b. Be impartial. c. DO NOT argue with students. d. Be firm with students from the very beginning. e. DO NOT discipline the entire class for the misconduct of a few. f. Make a seating arrangement if necessary. g. Sarcasm and ridicule have no place in the classroom. h. The teacher/student relationship should remain professional and cordial, but excessive familiarity should be avoided with students. STUDENT DRESS CODE Proper and appropriate attire contributes to a positive learning environment. Students should abide by the following dress code rules: No shorts higher than knee-cap. No clothing with obscene written messages, pictures or symbols and/or messages depicting drugs or alcohol. No tube tops, tank tops, or see-through blouses. No bare back, bare midriffs or sleeveless undershirts. No hats or bandanas No flip flops or sandals (shoes must have safety straps from the back). Any manner of dress which is unsafe or disruptive to the orderly educational process should be avoided. Student must wear ID PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Professional Development is the umbrella under which all in-service activities occur. It is a collaborative effort and the responsibility of every person who affects student learning and the learning environment. The restructuring of professional development must reflect current research professional development standards, and effective teaching practices. Professional experiences must encompass district goals, priorities, and initiatives and evolve form effort with all parties to provide professional growth activities to staff members to enhance the learning environment. Training workshops will be provided as needed. These professional development workshops will be based on student needs, faculty needs, District Incentives, and initiatives. 15
