2 Rhode Island College Club Sport Code of Conduct and Expectations Introduction The Rhode Island College Club Sports Program provides students with the opportunity to participate in student directed programming at a competitive intercollegiate level. Club sports allow students to compete in a variety of sports activities not offered on the varsity level at the College. The Club Sports Program is under the administrative oversight of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation. The club sports programs were initiated with the support and approval of Student Community Government in Institutional recognition, oversight, management and funding for club sports are under the jurisdiction of Rhode Island College s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation. Guidelines for Participation 1. Only officially enrolled and matriculating Rhode Island College students are eligible to participate in club sports. A 9 credit minimum is required for participation; in the event a governing body requires a higher standard, the higher standard would apply. 2. No employees, dependants, friends, alumni, students from other institutions etc. are eligible to participate in college club sports even if they pay the equivalent of an activity fee. 3. Students must have a current physical on file at Health Services. In turn, they will issue a Certificate for Sports Participation to be turned into the Murray Center Athletic Training Room. Other required forms to be turned in to the Murray Center Athletic Training Room are the following: Personal Information Form, Assumption of Risk and Liability Waiver, Club Sport Code of Conduct and Expectations and a photocopy of current insurance card(s). 4. Students who are on official leave of absence or those who have withdrawn with the intention of later reapplying are NOT eligible to participate in Club Sports. 5. Students who participate in intramurals are eligible to participate in club sports in those same sports. Equipment & Inventory Individual clubs are responsible for the inspection of their equipment during the season. Any deficiencies should immediately be reported to the equipment manager for the Department and Athletics Recreation. The Department of Athletics and Recreation will provide college equipment and/or repair. All equipment will be inventoried and stored by the Department of Athletics and Recreation during the off-season and reissued at the start of the next season. Club sports are responsible to properly maintain safe equipment throughout the season and any issues with equipment, especially those involving safety, should be immediately reported to the Assistant Director for Club Sports. When issuing equipment the Equipment Sign-Out Form must be completed. Once the season is complete equipment will be kept in a storage room in a designated area. All lost or non-returned equipment will be replaced at the expense of the responsible club member. The Registrar s Office will place holds on grades and registration until equipment is returned or paid for. Rhode Island College is not responsible for lost personal items.
3 Standards of Conduct The intent of this Code of Conduct and Discipline Policy is not to supersede any other college policy; nor is it to judge who is guilty or not guilty. It is meant to set high standards relating to the department s expectations of how club sport students represent Rhode Island College and to state the potential consequences for those who make poor choices which reflect negatively on themselves and the college. Students must act responsibly and remember that they represent Rhode Island College wherever they might be. Club sports can be disciplined for inappropriate on-campus or off-campus actions by the club or individual members. Disciplinary action can occur when the Director of Athletics and Recreation deems the offense punishable in communication with the appropriate parties (i.e., campus police, resident life, etc.). Alcohol and Drug Use The consumption or possession of alcohol or illegal drugs is strictly prohibited during at any club sport event by members, coaches, instructors, and advisors no matter the age. This includes anytime the club is gathered at a Rhode Island College sponsored event or the traveling to and from a sponsored event. Additionally, no participant, coach, instructor, or advisor is allowed to participate in any Rhode Island College sponsored practice/contest/meeting under the influence of alcohol or drugs. An alcohol and drug violation will be handled as a major infraction with disciplinary action taken by the Director of Athletic and Recreation. Hazing Hazing is prohibited from all levels of club sports at Rhode Island College. Any action or situation created to produce mental, emotional, psychological, physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, intimidation, or ridicule regardless of the individual s willingness to participate is considered hazing. Rhode Island College is opposed of having any activities that go against the positive development of our students and the atmosphere of social and moral responsibility the College wants to create. Disciplinary action will be taken with the punishment decided by the Director of Athletics and Recreation depending on the severity of the case in communication with the Dean of Students. Social Media Rhode Island College understands the popularity and usefulness of social media networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, You Tube and others and supports their use by students provided that: No offensive or inappropriate pictures are posted No offensive or inappropriate comments are posted Any information placed on the website(s) does not violate college, athletic department or Club Sports code of conduct Photos and/or comments posted on these sites do not depict team-related or RIC-identifiable activities inappropriately Club Sport students must remember they are representatives of Rhode Island College and are in the public eye more so than other students. Please keep the following in mind as you participate on social networking websites: Before participating in any online community, understand that anything posted online is available to anyone in the world. Any text or photo placed online becomes the property of the
4 site(s) and is completely out of your control the moment it is placed online even if you limit access to your site. You should not post any information, photos or other items online that could embarrass you, your family, your team, the athletic department or Rhode Island College. This includes information that may be posted by others on your page. Never post your home address, local address phone number(s), birth date or other personal information. You could be a target of predators. Coaches and athletic department administrators may monitor these web sites. Club Sport students could face discipline and even dismissal for violations of team, department, and/or college policies. Rhode Island College Campus Police and other local law enforcement agencies may monitor these websites regularly as may potential employers and internship supervisors as a way of screening applicants. In addition, many graduate programs and scholarship committees also search these sites to screen candidates. Rhode Island College students should be very careful when using online social networking sites and keep in mind that sanctions may be imposed, including the loss of your eligibility for the season, if these sites are used improperly or depict inappropriate, embarrassing or dangerous behaviors. Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct In order to promote character development amongst all participants, to enhance integrity of the Club Sports Program and higher education, and to promote civility in society; students, coaches and all others associated with Rhode Island College Department of Athletics and events are required to adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility. Any violation of these core principals of sportsmanship and ethical behavior could result in disciplinary action and the loss of the right to participate.
