9 Introduction Several years ago I realized that my oldest child didn t really know much about the United States of America. We had been doing a daily geography curriculum that I thought was doing a good job of preparing him. However, while he could read maps and legends, he was almost lost when it came to recognizing the states and knowing their capitals. I remember learning about the states in school, but it wasn t until I began homeschooling that I learned about notebooking pages and poster pages and how much of a role they can play in learning. I don t remember taking notes in school, until I was in high school and college, so honestly, the thought never crossed my mind. However, now that we have used these more regularly in our homeschool, I see the benefits. Thus began my journey to create some fun-filled geography printables for my son. This turned in to a huge project and the Across the USA curriculum was born. I am so excited you have chosen to use this curriculum with your own children. I pray it is a blessing you and your family, as it has been to ours. Across the USA In All You Do

10 HOW TO USE THIS CURRICULUM The popular 50 State song lists the states in alphabetical order. And while this is a great way to learn the names of the sates, I have found that it isn t the easiest way to learn about the states. I much prefer teaching the states by region. I have organized the states in to six regions - Northeast, South, Midwest, Southwest and West. I like to start with the Northeast region and work my way West, but you can go in any order you wish. Each region has printables for each state as well as questions related to the studies they ve done on each state. I recommend studying one state per week. OVERVIEW OF LESSONS Included with each state is a poster page, a brief history of the state and coloring pages for the state bird, state flower and state flag. These printables are meant to be a starting point for the student. Although a brief history for each state is included, general notebooking pages are included in the Appendix to encourage students to do more research on their own about each state. 12 Southwest The following pages are to be used in addition to the individual state files. I suggest using them after students have learned about the states, their history and their symbols. These pages are great for a mini-unit review after you work through each state in the Southwest region. You can print the color cards twice to use them as a traditional matching game or use them to match with the state names. Some of the flowers and birds go with more than one state, so be careful. The state flags can be matched to each other or with the black & white flags

22 History of the state of Oklahoma Evidence shows that native peoples traveled through Oklahoma thousands of years before Europeans ever set foot on the land. Ancestors of the Witchita and Caddo peoples lived in what is now Oklahoma. Spaniard Fransico Vasquez de Coronado traveled through Oklahoma in 1541, but it wasn't until the French explored the land in the 1700's that it was claimed. It remained under French rule until 1803, when all the French territory west of the Mississippi River was purchased by the United States in the Louisiana State Bird: Scissor-tailed Flycatcher Purchase. The territory, now known as Oklahoma, was first part of the Arkansas Territory from 1819 to During the 19 th century, thousands of Native Americans were removed from their ancestral homelands from across North America and transported to the area including and surrounding present-day Oklahoma. The Chcotaw was the first of the Five Civilized Tribes to be removed from the southeastern United States. The phrase Trail of Tears was coined from the removal of the Choctaw nation in 1831, but usually used for the Cherokee removal. From , cattle ranches in Texas strove to meet the demands for food in eastern cities and railroads in Kansas promised to deliver in a timely manner. Increased presence of white settlers in Indian Territory prompted the U.S. Government to establish the Dawes Act in 1887, which divided the lands of individual tribes into allotments for individual families, which encouraged farming and private land ownership among the Native Americans. Major land runs, including the Land Run of 1889, were held for settlers where certain territories were opened to settlement starting at a precise time. This was usually on a first-come, first-served basis. Those crossing the lines into the territory prior to the set time, were said to have crossed the border sooner, which led to the term Sooners and eventually became the state nickname. At first, the Sequoyah Statehood Convention of 1905 attempted to create an all-indian state, which failed. However, their efforts did lay the groundwork for the Oklahoma Statehood Convention, which took place two years later. Fun Facts: Oklahoma adopted the Mistletoe as its state flower in years before statehood. It remained the state flower until 2004, when the Oklahoma Rose was adopted. Tulsa is was known as the Oil Capital of the World for most of the 20 th century. Oklahoma's state flower is the Oklahoma Rose, which was adopted in The state bird is the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher and the state tree is the Eastern Redbud. The largest and capital city is Oklahoma City. The state song is has the same name as the state and the famed musical, Oklahoma. The state flag honors more than 60 groups of Native Americans and their ancestors. The blue field comes from a flag carried by Choctaw soldiers during the civil war. The center shield is the battle shield of an Osage warrior, which is made of buffalo hide and decorated with eagle feathers. Two symbols of peace lie across the shield. One is the calumet, or peace pipe. The other is a olive branch. Crosses on the shield are Native American symbols for stars, which represent high ideals. State Flower: Oklahoma Rose
