31 BISHOP JAMES A. HEALY James Augustine Healy was born in Macon, GA., on April 6, He was the son of Michael M. Healy, an Irish immigrant from County Roscommon and Eliza Smith, a Negro slave. In 1837 he was enrolled in a Quaker School in Flushing, N.Y. In 1844 he was sent to the Collage of the Holy Cross in Worchester, Mass., graduating in its first class in After two years in the Sulpician Seminary in Montreal, he entered the Sulpician Seminary in Paris, France. After being ordained in the Cathedral of Notre Dame on June 10, 1854 he was transferred to the diocese of Boston. He served as secretary to the Bishop, the first chancellor of the diocese, an assistant at St. John s Church, rector of the Cathedral and pastor and builder of St. James Church. Active in civic life and welfare work, he played a decisive role in the development of the Home for Destitute Catholic Children, the House of the Good Shepherd, St. Anne s Foundling Home and the Catholic Laymen s League. In February 1875 he was named Bishop of Portland, Maine. He was consecrated on June 2nd. For 25 years he governed this large diocese, supervising the founding of the diocese of Manchester, N.H. when it was cut off from Portland in He established 60 parishes and 68 mission s stations. He also added 18 new schools and convents and a well-developed series of welfare institutions. Bishop Healy also achieved recognition as a pulpit orator and appeared frequently as the featured speaker at civic and ecclesiastical functions throughout the New England States. Among his other activities were his contributions to American Church Laws at the Baltimore Council of 1884 and his work as a consultant to the Bureau of Indian Affaires of the Department of Interior. On his silver jubilee as a bishop he was named assistant to the papal throne. Bishop Healy died in Portland on August 5, At the quarterly meeting of the Board of Directors on October 17 19, 1969, it was voted to change the name of Cabot Province, which encompasses the New England States to Bishop James A. Healy Province. Page 31 of 33
32 Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request), Through Christ our Lord. Amen Our Father Hail Mary Glory be to the Father Please report all favors received: The Father McGivney Guild One Columbus Plaza New Haven, CT Page 32 of 33
33 I AM OLD GLORY Born amid the first flames of America s fight for freedom, I am the symbol of a country that has grown from a little group of thirteen colonies to a united nation of sovereign states. Planted firmly on the high pinnacle of American faith my gently fluttering folds have proved an inspiration to untold millions. Men have followed me into battle with unwavering courage. They have looked upon me as a symbol of national unity. They have prayed that they and their fellow citizens might continue to enjoy the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, which have been granted to every American as the heritage of free men. So long as men love liberty more than life itself; so long as they treasure the priceless privileges brought with the blood of our forefathers; so long as the principles of truth, justice and charity for all remain deeply rooted in human heart, I shall continue to be an enduring banner of the United States of America.
