BSC History Created in 1939 in response to a community need for a local college, BSC was originally known as Bismarck Junior College. The first students started classes on September 4, 1939, on the third floor of Bismarck High School with 107 full- and part-time students and 12 instructors. By the late 1940s a new location became increasingly urgent as college enrollments soared with returning GIs. In 1951 the ND Legislature responded to an appeal from community leaders to grant the college 15 acres on the Capitol grounds for a campus site. BJC moved into its own building at 900 Boulevard Avenue in Within a few years the college had outgrown the Capitol site. In 1959 Harold Schafer, a local entrepreneur and founder of the successful Gold Seal Company, offered the college land overlooking the Missouri River at the northwest edge of Bismarck. Classes began on the new campus in the fall of 1961 in a single building, Schafer Hall. That windy hill has been transformed over the years with the addition of more than a dozen buildings, countless landscape improvements, the MDU Resources Community Bowl, parking lots, sidewalks, walking paths and more. In addition to the primary campus, BSC has three satellite locations. BSC s Allied Health programs in downtown Bismarck provide state-of-the-art classrooms and labs for Surgical, Nursing and Paramedic /EMT. The Bismarck State College-Mandan Campus at 1831 Twin City Drive S.E. in Mandan opened in 2007 to house the Mechanical Maintenance program. The Lineworker program has long been located in its own space on the Old Red Trail in Mandan where an outdoor forest of poles provides hands-on practice for lineworker students. Part of the Bismarck Public Schools for many years, the college became part of the North Dakota University System in The college s name changed to Bismarck State College in Today, Bismarck State College is the third largest institution in the North Dakota University System with nearly 4,000 students and 11,000 community members involved in continuing education and training. Our students choose their beyond. For more than 78 years BSC has proudly helped them get there. beyond

Commencement Speaker KAT PERKINS Kat Perkins grew up in Scranton, N.D., surrounded by a family of musicians and knew at a young age that she wanted a career as a performer. After several summers as a main act on the Medora Musical stage, Perkins followed her drive and passion for performing and moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to pursue music. Perkins quickly gained the attention of the Twin Cities music scene by taking stages in the several projects and bands she formed over the years. The most successful of these was her rock band, Scarlet Haze, which opened for Bon Jovi and worked with some of the music industry s most well-known acts. After a hiatus from performing due to vocal surgery, in 2014 Perkins appeared on season 6 of NBC s The Voice. Perkins turned three chairs during her blind audition, charted in the top five on itunes several times with her stand-out performances on the show, and sailed to the finals with help from her coach, Adam Levine. Since The Voice, Perkins has gone on an average of two military tours per year to perform for the troops overseas and sold out venues across America with a variety of themed performances and tours. She more recently began going into schools to encourage students to follow their dreams, live a fearless life, and make a positive impact on the world. Perkins has created a nonprofit foundation, The Rising Star Foundation, providing scholarships and opportunity for aspiring musicians. Perkins promises to leave graduates with an inspiring message about finding their passion, taking leadership opportunities, working with others, developing a positive attitude, and working towards their dreams. 4 BISMARCK STATE COLLEGE 2018 COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

Student Commencement Speaker CARTER HONEYMAN Carter Honeyman has always known he wanted to become the fourth generation to farm the land his great-grandfather homesteaded in I was always out in the field with my dad. I never liked being in the house; I knew that s what I wanted to do right away. Carter s commitment was tested his senior year of high school after his dad was diagnosed with leukemia, and Carter took charge of the operation. Those months cemented his career choice even as they changed his college choice. Rather than attend North Dakota State University or Dickinson State University, where he had an offer to play football, he set his sights on Bismarck State College. He knew he could earn an agriculture degree in two years at BSC and be close enough to get home every weekend to farm. Throughout his time at BSC, Carter and his dad (now in full remission) applied Carter s new knowledge to the farm. From soil health to precision agriculture, Carter says the BSC faculty ensured he was well prepared for his chosen career. Carter lives on the family farm near Regent, N.D., with his parents Gary ( 81) and Tia Honeyman, and four sisters Jaycie, Mollie, Emma and Kattie. BISMARCK STATE COLLEGE 2018 COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY 5

Alumnus of the Year MIKE BULLINGER BSC Alumnus of the Year Mike Bullinger s mother died when he was 14 years old. His dad had only an 8th grade education, and the family didn t have a lot of money. Bullinger worked several jobs in high school but lacked direction academically. Then, during his senior year, Mike s life took a significant turn. He took a bookkeeping class and met his future wife, Peggy. He fell in love with both. With Peggy as an influence and accounting as a goal, Bullinger applied to Bismarck Junior College in The influence of professors like Art Davis and his own considerable work ethic helped him earn a $200 scholarship his first year. That scholarship was a lifeline, and he never forgot it. Bullinger earned a bachelor s and master s degree in accounting from the University of North Dakota (UND) and went on to become a CPA. Over the years, he started up or purchased companies in a wide array of industries. Today, he owns Western Products and is actively involved in franchising as well as commercial and residential real estate and development. Through an endowment with the BSC Foundation, the Bullinger family provides two $1,250 scholarships each year to business and accounting students who need a hand. The family also has established endowments at UND, the Fargo Moorhead Area Foundation and Dakota Medical Foundation, and have been instrumental in preserving historic Medora. When determining how and where to give, the Bullingers philosophy is to look back. What helped you in life? Look back and help others that way, Bullinger says. Mike and Peggy were named Philanthropists of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals in BISMARCK STATE COLLEGE 2018 COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

Rising Star Award JON HUNKE Jon Hunke ( 94) believes that those willing to give back can truly make a difference. As the BSC Rising Star Award winner, he s being recognized for that very attribute. At age 18, the Bismarck native says BSC was the only college for him it was familiar, inexpensive, and small enough to ready him to move on to a four-year degree. While Hunke figured he d eventually pursue business and accounting, BSC made it possible for him to make sure of that direction. He explored psychology, biology, and even engineering before transferring to North Dakota State University (NDSU) and ultimately majoring in accounting. Hunke paid for college as he went, earning degrees at BSC, NDSU, and University of Mary. He worked full time while earning his master s degree. After NDSU, he worked at a regional accounting firm before coming home to Bismarck, where he first went to work for MDU Construction Services Group, an organizational arm of MDU Resources. He s advanced in the company and currently serves as Vice President of Accounting, Finance and Information. Hunke is involved in the BSC National Alumni Association and BSC Foundation. He and his wife, Sommer, are members of the BSC Alumni Association 1939 Club. He s also on the BSC Student Housing Board and the BSC Business and Advisory Board. 8 Legacy Family SWENSON FAMILY Enrolling at BSC in 1954, Harley Swenson says he went from a stickin-the-mud kid to a social butterfly. Swenson graduated and went on to the University of North Dakota (UND), where he met his wife, Margaret, and earned an engineering degree. He came home and established Swenson, Hagen & Company, a civil engineering and land surveying firm, in Over the years, Harley and his company worked on a number of campus improvement projects with Presidents Kermit Lidstrom and Donna Thigpen. From parking lots to planting trees, Swenson got his hands dirty working on the campus. Margaret, a homemaker and community volunteer, gets the credit for ensuring Harley could volunteer and serve many business-related causes in the community, including 24 years on the State Water Commission. The couple s children all attended or graduated from BSC. Kim (Swenson) O Leary attended for two years and went on to earn a bachelor s and master s degree at UND. Son Mark ( 85) transferred to North Dakota State University, earned a construction management degree and runs Swenson Engineering. Kari (Swenson) Hausauer ( 82) played basketball for BSC, and racked up a record 43 points in a game against the University of Mary that held for many years. Son-in-law Mark Hausauer ( 79) played basketball at BSC and was the conference rebounding champ in Grandson Troy Hausauer ( 15) also played basketball for the Mystics. Longtime supporters of both the BSC National Alumni Association (they are members of the 1939 Society) and the BSC Foundation, in 2013 Harley and Margaret established a Swenson family scholarship for pre-engineering students at BSC. Harley was named BSC Outstanding Alumnus in 1995 and received the Presidential Merit Award from the BSC National Alumni Association in BISMARCK STATE COLLEGE 2018 COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

Rita Nodland Alumni Coordinator BSC National Alumni Association bsc.alumni@bismarckstate.edu BJC/BSC LEGACY CORDS The Bismarck State College National Alumni Association honors graduates who have a shared legacy with parents or grandparents who have also graduated from BJC or BSC. These graduates are recognized today by wearing the green and gold legacy cords. BSC ACADEMIC MACE The mace dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was used as a weapon of war. Over time, the mace was adopted as a regal symbol of authority. Academic maces symbolize an institution s authority to grant degrees. The Bismarck State College mace was first used in 2008 at the request of President Larry C. Skogen. Designed by Michelle Lindblom, Professor of Art, the mace was crafted through a community endeavor led by the Dakota Woodturners and several BSC alumni. It is carved from North Dakota Badlands cedar, a wood native to the state. The staff on which the mace is carried represents educational stewardship. Its three rings denote important dates in the growth of the college: September 4, 1939, the first day of classes; February 12, 1951, the day the 32nd Legislative Assembly granted the college 15 acres on the Capitol grounds for a campus site; and April 27, 1987, the day the 50th Legislative Assembly changed the college s name from Bismarck Junior College to Bismarck State College. The three-sided pyramid signifies BSC s commitment to serve the community, state and nation. Each side of the pyramid contains symbols of BSC: the college seal, the tree of knowledge and the state Capitol building. The top of the pyramid is adorned with a bronze prow representing lifelong learning. PHOTOGRAPHS Lifetouch Special Events will be taking professional photographs of the graduates as they receive their diplomas. Photos may be viewed and purchased at events.lifetouch.com/bismarck. COMMENCEMENT LIVESTREAM Today s Commencement ceremony can be watched live at bismarckstate.edu. After May 16, the recorded ceremony will be available to view at bismarckstate.edu/2018commencement.
