2 We Welcome You! Welcome to the 2017 MidSOUTH Summer Conference for Integrated Behavioral Health Studies The MidSOUTH Summer Conference for Integrated Behavioral Health Studies welcomes you to our 2017 conference. The conference is in its 45th year and has seen many changes in the fields of substance abuse, mental health, and best pratices in behavioral health. We are bringing you a full slate of workshops concerning trauma-informed care and integrated behavioral healthcare for those working with individuals faced with many challenges in their lives. WHAT IS INTEGRATED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH? Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) is a dynamic method of integrating and coordinating the highest quality primary healthcare and behavioral healthcare services. In its broadest sense, IBH can be used to describe the practice of providing services to the whole person with behavioral health and primary health working in unison. Often, this vulnerable population has multiple and/or co-occurring needs, resulting in a client seeking services from both the behavioral health professions and the medical health professions. Integration of services is essential when providing appropriate care and support of this population. 4 Featured Speakers & Evening Events Monday, June 5, 2017 David Mee-Lee, MD David Mee-Lee is a leading expert in co-occurring substance use and mental disorders with over 30-years experience in person-centered treatment and program development. He is a Boardcertified psychiatrist and is certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). Mee-Lee has trained and consulted for hundreds of organizations, ranging from small mental health centers to government departments and national behavioral healthcare companies. He is Chief Editor of The American Society for Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria and is the Senior Vice President for The Change Companies. Mee-Lee s medical, psychiatric and addictions training began in his home country of Australia. From there it took him to Ohio, Massachusetts, Hawaii and eventually California. He has trained and consulted in almost every US state, and his international work has taken him to Australia, Japan, Singapore, Germany, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.K. Healing Voices Documentary Presentation and Panel Discussion Healing Voices is a feature-length documentary which explores the experiences commonly labeled as psychosis or mental illness through the real-life stories of individuals working to overcome extreme mental states and integrate these experiences into their lives in meaningful ways. Members of Personal Empowerment Recovery Coalition of Arkansas will present the documentary and have question and answer session following the presentation. Tuesday, June 6, 2017 Mike Veny Mike Veny is a leading mental health speaker, who is fiercely committed to wellness, suicide prevention, and helping people work together more smoothly. He has spent 15 years making it his mission to empower people to connect authentically. Veny s path to becoming a public speaker became evident at an early age. He convinced the staff at psychiatric hospitals to discharge him three times during his childhood. In addition to being hospitalized as a child, he was expelled from three schools, attempted suicide, and was medicated in efforts to reduce his emotional instability and behavioral outbursts. By the fifth grade, Mike was put in a special education class. Aside from getting more individualized attention from the teacher, he learned that pencil erasers make a great sound when tapped on a desk. He had no idea that drumming would become his career or his path to recovery. Courtney Frierson, LCSW and M.S. Wade, RYT-200, Veteran s Yoga Project Ambassador Trauma-informed care is an approach to engaging people with histories of trauma that recognizes the impact and the effects of trauma and acknowledges the role that trauma has played in a person s life. Service delivery is directed by a thorough understanding of the profound biological, neurological, psychological, and social effects of trauma in children and adults. This presentation will discuss the use of yoga as a service delivery system in a fun and engaging way. Wednesday, June 7, 2017 Thomas Payne, PhD Thomas J. Payne, PhD is a tenured Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology and Communicative Sciences at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC).
