1 1 SHANNON GODLOVE CURRICULUM VITAE PROFESSIONAL HISTORY Assistant Professor of English Literature and Coordinator, Certificate Program in Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Dept. of English, Columbus State University, Fall 2012-Present Visiting Assistant Professor of Medieval Studies, Divisions of English and Human Studies, Alfred University, Alfred, New York, Fall 2010-Spring 2012 HIGHER EDUCATION Ph.D. English Literature, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, IL, Aug Primary Areas of Study: Old English Language and Literature; Medieval Literature M.A. English Literature, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, IL, 2005 B.A. Medieval Studies, minor in English Literature, Smith College, Northampton, MA, 2002 MONOGRAPH Apostolhad: Authorship and Identity in Old English Religious Literature Under contract with Brill s Medieval and Renaissance Authors and Texts Series, Brill Publishing: Leiden, Netherlands. In progress. This study explores how the continuing fascination of the Anglo-Saxon church with the sanctity of the apostles influenced Old English religious poets and homilists such as Cynewulf, the Andreas-poet, and Ælfric of Eynsham to describe and interpret their own authorship in the missionary context of apostolic work. I demonstrate how these writers appropriate the scriptural language, legendary deeds, and cultural capital of the apostles to fashion complex, authoritative religious identities for themselves as writers, and, through their texts, for the Christian culture of the emerging Anglo-Saxon nation. This identification enables these authors to proclaim Anglo-Saxon solidarity with the universal Christian church even as it destabilizes the center/periphery binary: Rome becomes, in Nicholas Howe s words, the imagined capital of Anglo-Saxon England, yet England, whose native writers imitate the apostles and perpetuate their commission, becomes transformed into an alternative center of Christianity. EDITED VOLUME A Companion to Boniface, with co-editor Michel Aaij. Under contract with Brill Companions to the Christian Tradition Series. Brill Publishing: Leiden, Netherlands. In progress. A Companion to Boniface re-engages with the major issues of Boniface studies and the Anglo-Saxon missionaries from contemporary critical perspectives, and seeks to introduce Boniface his life, work, and

2 2 impact to a new generation of scholars. This volume for Brill s Companions to the Christian Tradition series seeks to bring the best insights from British, American, German, and Dutch scholarship together, making them more accessible to English-speaking readers ranging from students to specialists. The volume is organized into five sub-sections which will address different areas of Boniface s life, work, and impact: a Background and Contexts section focusing on the outlines of Boniface s life and interpersonal networks, followed by sections on Boniface s Written Legacy, his work with Doctrine and the Papacy, his Spheres of Activity among different peoples in the Frankish and Germanic regions of Europe, and finally, his Veneration and Afterlife as a saint and as a political and historical figure.
