1 Augsburg Regains Title; Swenson and Pollard are Coaches of the Year, Pyle is Outstanding Story by John Johnson DUBUQUE (IA) With the title wrapped up and five wrestlers in the finals, including three titlelists and two runners-up and nine All-Americans, Augsburg finished with points, outdistancing second-place and defending national Wartburg (Iowa) by 36 points, with 99.5 points. Wisconsin-La Crosse placed third with 92.5 points, Luther (Iowa) finished with 86.0 points good enough to place fourth, and the College of New Jersey rounded out the top five with 46.5 points. In the first bout of the night, Augsburg put out the first of their five finalists to face the first of two finalists for Luther. Senior Nate Hansen (Gregory, SD) of Luther (Iowa) who had placed 4th in 06 and is a three-time state champion, faced Augsburg s Seth Flodeen (Cannon Falls, MN) who was a three-time state placer and a 3X junior All-American. Hansen scored a first period takedown, and Flodeen was able to tie the match with two escapes, but it was Hansen who used an escape of his own with about a minute left in the match to edge the Auggie by the score of 3-2, giving the senior Norse his first national title. At 133, Augsburg would go 0-2 in the finals as Junior, and returning Division III runner-up, Jafari Vanier, (Bloomington Kennedy HS, MN) would have to settle for second place again as he fell 4-3 in the finals to Dave Morgan of Kings College (PA). A scoreless first period would lead to another tie score when Vanier scored an escape early in the third period to knot the match at 2-2, but Morgan scored the match-winning points on a takedown with about a minute left in the match to go up 4-2. Vanier escaped again after, but could not score again. Morgan, who placed 6th as a freshman, and is a Pennsylvania state runner-up, is on track to be a four-time AA. Vanier was also a JUCO runner-up in 2002 for Iowa Central Both wrestlers in the 141-pound title match have been two-time Division-I national qualifiers. Junior Quincy Osborn (Grand Rapids, MN) defeated two-time state champion Ricky LaForge in the 141- pound title bout. LaForge score the first points with a take down, but Osborn would battle storm back scoring six straight points to win his first national title by the score of 7-3. 2 Augsburg s next finalist, a national finalist last year as a sophomore, Jeremy Anderson (Thief River Falls, MN), also earned his first national championship in 2007, with a 5-2 win over Joe Galante of the College of New Jersey in the title bout at 157 pounds to become a two-time All- American. Tied at 2-2, Anderson scored a takedown 38 seconds into the third period and collected a riding-time bonus point for the final margin of victory. Augsburg's Marcus LeVesseur (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) became the first Division III wrestler ever to win four national titles, and the second college wrestler ever to finish his career unbeaten and untied. In the 165-pound national championship match, LeVesseur closed his career with a 3-0, shutout victory over Mike Guenther of the College of New Jersey. LeVesseur, who won Division III national titles at 157 pounds three times (2003, 2004, 2005), finished his senior season at 30-0, and his collegiate career at 155-0, the second-longest winning streak in college wrestling history. Cael Sanderson went during his career at Iowa State from , winning four Division I national titles. "Unbelievable, wow, unbelievable," LeVesseur said. "I stayed focused with my regular pre-match routine, and I just took care of me and that was the biggest focus for this match. Just not to get overwhelmed by the hype and the pressure and just take care of me." Only seven wrestlers in NCAA history have won four national titles competing in one division, and these are eight who have won four or more national titles. Cael Sanderson (Iowa State) and Pat Smith of Oklahoma State ( , 1994) accomplished the feat in Division I, while in Division II, Les Sigman of Nebraska- Omaha (03-06), Cole Province of Central Oklahoma ( ), Dan Russell of Portland (OR) State (88-91) and Tim Wright of SIU-Edwardsville, Illinois, ( ), won four national titles each. Carleton Hasselrig of Pitt-Johnstown, Pennsylvania, ( ), won six national titles, three in Division II and Division I, this was at a time when NCAA champion wrestlers from Division III and Division II qualified to compete in the NCAA Division I championships. Augsburg s other placers included 149- pounder, Jared Evans (Blue Earth, MN), a three-time All-American, closed out his career with his second consecutive fourthplace finish. He dropped a 6-3 decision to former national champion Joe Pflug of Heidelberg (OH) in the consolation finals, at 174, Junior Robbie Gotreau (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) finished fifth, claiming a 2-1 win over Andrew Winfield of McDaniel (MD), at 197, junior Wally O'Connor (Jr., Oshkosh, WI) finished eighth, and at 285, Senior Andrew Neumann (Somerset, WI), finished fifth overall with a 9-2 victory over Arkadiy Levitin of Hunter (NY). The nine All-American performances marked the fourth time in Auggie history that Augsburg has claimed nine or more All-Americans. The Auggies also had nine All-Americans in 1998 and 2004, and had All-Americans in all 10-weight classes in Augsburg has had five or more All- Americans every season since Augsburg has finished among the top two teams in national competition 19 times since 1975, has finished among the top four nationally the last 19 seasons in a row (the only NCAA school in any division that can make that claim), and has finished in the top 20 nationally every season since 1971 (NCAA from 1983 to present, NAIA pre-1983). For his efforts, Augsburg s head coach Jeff Swenson was named National Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association for the sixth time in his 25-year career. On winning the title, Coach Swenson states, It s just a great feeling. We had a great group of guys, and they really came through for us at the end of the year. We really got a wake up call on February first when Wartburg beat us. We cruised through the national duals, and I hate to say that we needed a loss, but we needed something, and I think that loss helped us. We were living under a false sense of security that we were better that we were, and after that loss to Wartburg, it was all business and the kids listened to what needed to be done. Swenson closed by saying, "It's hard for me, when the year comes to an end because of the great seniors, but the bottom line is I'm proud of them as a group. Runner-up Wartburg finished with six All-Americans and two national champions. Senior Blake Gillis (Spencer, IA) and junior 197-pounder T.J. Miller of Cedar Falls became the 24th and 25th individual national champions in Wartburg College wrestling history. Blake Gillis finished his fourth trip to the finals with a 4-0 win over Bryan Kmetz of Baldwin-Wallace, while TJ Miller garnished his second All-American status by downing Buena Vista's (IA) Ben Strandberg The Knight s Gillis and Miller were joined by junior 133-pounder Jake Helvey of Mitchellville, Iowa, (5th), sophomore 157-pounder Aaron Wernimont of Pocahontas, Iowa, (sixth), senior 165- pounder Jason Knipp of Waterloo, Iowa, (fifth), and sophomore 184-pounder Romeo Djoumessi (fourth on the All- American stand. Helvey ended up fifth along with Knipp, while Djoumessi was fourth and Wernimont placed sixth. The Knight s head coach, Jim Miller, looked like a caged tiger as he watched the 2007 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships Final Team Standings Rank Pts School Augsburg Wartburg UW LaCrosse Luther College Of New Jersey Kings College Buena Vista Hunter Suny Cortland North Central Coe College Cornell UW Platteville Baldwin Wallace Johnson and Wales Suny Brockport Ithaca Delaware Valley Mt St Joseph UW Stevens Pt Olivet Heidelberg Saint Johns York College Knox College 197-pound title match as not only a coach, but a father as well. Coach Miller never really looked at ease during the match even after TJ amassed a 5 point lead in the first period, that stretched to a major decision by the end of the match, At the point when the match ended, the coach ran onto the mat, but instead of the massive 197- pound TJ jumping into a strong, but smaller coaches arms, Jim found himself jumping into his son s arms to celebrate his victory. A special moment for a special coach, who was also named Amatuer Wrestling News Man of the Year. Next year, TJ s goal is to match the two NCAA titles that his dad, Jim owns, while a wrestler at UNI, then a D-II college. The Knights kept several impressive streaks intact with their weekend efforts. Wartburg has now finished first or second in 13 of the last 15 national meets, had at least three individual All-Americans in 17 consecutive national championships, registered at least one individual All-American in 20 straight national meets, and gained at least one individual national champion in five straight national championships. When reflecting on their runner-up finish Coach Miller stated that, I feel awesome. If at the beginning of the year you told me we would win the conference title, finish second in the nation and get a couple of national champions, I'd be ecstatic and I am ecstatic." Wrestling U.S.A. 4 Third place UW-LaCrosse matched Wartburg s six All-America honors at the 2007 NCAA s, this included Josh Chelf, who captured the 174-pound national title with a 9-0 major decision over Kyle Vanderhyde of Olivet College. "I was going to wrestle my style and not change anything," said Chelf. "It's hard to explain right now on winning the national title, just a feeling of being on the top of the world." Chelf now has three career All-America honors, finishing third in 2006 and sixth in Chelf went 4-0 in the championships and finishes 43-3 overall on the season. He is in his career, ranking fourth in school history in wins. "I'm really excited for Josh," said firstyear head coach Dave Malecek. "He is a real student of the sport, the most coachable and hardest-working wrestler we have." Malecek says he is really proud of his Eagle team. "We have a great group of student-athletes that represent UW-La Crosse," said Malecek. "I'm so glad I came here to be the head coach with these guys. The whole team stuck with me in learning a new system and I appreciate their efforts." Malecek was selected the 2007 NCAA Division III Rookie Coach of the Year. Dave was previously named co-assistant coach of the year when he coached at Wartburg with Jim Miller. Incidentally, the other co-assistant coach of the year was Sam Barber, who has just been named the new head coach at Augsburg College as Jeff Swenson has stepped down to focus on his administrative duties at Augsburg. Miller himself was a NCAA Division II assistant coach of the year while he coached with Don Brigg s at UNI in Cedar Falls. The Eagle s Tim Palmer at 165-pounds and Jason Lulloff at 184-pounds both placed third for the Eagles Saturday. Palmer, in his first career appearance at the national championships, earned a 3-2 victory over Shaheim Bradshaw of SUNY- Brockport to avenge a 9-7 loss to Bradshaw in Friday's quarterfinals. Lulloff, the number one seed at 184, defeated third-seed Romeo Djoumessi of Wartburg 7-6 in the third-place match. Lulloff lost 3-2 to Hunter's Terrance Madden, seeded fourth, in the semifinals before winning by fall over Ithaca's Nichalos Calandrino to advance to the third-place match. Lulloff becomes the second wrestler in school history (Ryan Allen, ) to earn four NCAA Division III All-America honors, finishing third in 2006 and fourth in 2004 at 184-pounds and third in 2003 at 174. "My whole wrestling experience at UW-L has been awesome," said Lulloff. "I really wanted to come back (after a neck injury) to win a national title, but I also wanted to be there for my teammates." UW-L Eagle Ross Needham finished fourth Saturday at 157-pounds after a 4-1 loss to North Central's Bobby Gingerich. Jordan Kolinski, the eighth seed, finished sixth at 133-pounds Saturday after a 4-0 loss to fourth-seed Jacob Helvey of Wartburg in the fifth-place match. Jake Larsen, ranked fifth at 149-pounds, also placed sixth for UW-L after a 9-3 loss to sixth-seeded Don Ooton of SUNY- Brockport. Winning four NCAA titles and going undefeated seems to be a good argument for a wrestler to receive the Outstanding Wrestler award, but you could make a good case for a wrestler who won his weight class with three national champions in the 149-pound bracket. Wisconsin-La Crosse's Jake Larsen, Heidelberg's Joe Pflug, and Luther s Matt Pyle's are the three NCAA Division III champions. Plug is the defending champion at 157, but dropped to 149, and Larsen is the defending champion at 149. A champion in 2005, Pyle lost a semifinal match to the Eagle s Larsen in 2006, and ended up 5th. This year, Pyle made it to the semi-finals with two falls and would face Plug for a match-up of champs. The Norse would down Plug 6-2, to move into the finals against another senior in Mount St. Joseph's Jason Roush (Van Wert HS, OH). Roush a four-time national qualifier placed 3rd in 2005 and 2006, and was guaranteed his best finish by making the finals. Pyle, who placed third in the nation as a freshman in 2004, came back to win the NCAA title as a sophomore in 2005, and placed 5th last year. Both men are four-time qualifiers, but Pyle showed that he was ready to return to the top when he pinned Roush in 2:04 of the finals. Not only did Pyle get his third pin for the meet to garnish the NWCA pin award, he was also named the Outstanding Wrestler for the 2007 NCAA tournament for winning a bracket with three national champions! With his win, Pyle became Luther's first four-time all-american and the Norse s first two-time national champ. Pyle stated "With three national champions in there it was obviously on our mind all year. But, the coaches never lost their belief in me, and I never lost belief in myself that I could make it back to the top. Last year was disappointing, and it motivated me to work hard." The Norse left the finals with a perfect 2-0 record with titles from Nate Hansen at 125 and Matt Pyle at 157, marking just the second time in Norse history the program had two national champs in the same year. The previous time was in 2005 when Pyle and Garrett South claimed crowns. Hansen and Pyle wrapped up their senior years by becoming the 10th and 11th national champions in Norse history and for coach Dave Mitchell. At 184 pounds, another set of seniors would class for the title. Both wrestlers hail from New York, Terry Madden (Pine Bush HS, Staten Island, NY) of Hunter College who placed 6th in 2006 would face Stephon Sair (Huntington, NY) a returning champ from 06 and placed 4th in The two-time AA and champ Sair, looked to be the odds on favorite, but Hunter s Madden downed his opponent 4-2 for his own NCAA title. Maybe Madden s greatest influence, his father, Harry, who Terry stated, Believes in anything and everything I do and supports me 10,000%, is one of the reason that he was able to down the champ. The NCAA finals ended with a team photo of the Augsburg wrestler forming an X with their arms to signify the 10 Wrestling U.S.A. Magazine - May 15, 2007 page 27

5 NCAA wrestling titles for the Auggies. However, the X could also signify exit as well, as head Coach Jeff Swenson would announce the Tuesday, after nationals, that this would be his last NCAA has the coach at Augsburg. Finally, TCNJ s Joe Pollard (Hamilton, NJ) was selected as the 2007 National Wrestling Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year, rounding out a tremendous weekend for the Lions. Pollard, a four-year member of the coaching staff, played a key role under veteran head coach David Icenhower, Sr., as the team finished fifth at the national tournament with three All-Americans.
